For something quite different I did the riding the camels along the beach tour with lunch and a walk in a desert garden. I don't plan to go to Africa so this was an interesting new experience for me that was quite different than just hanging on a beach!!

Curious as to the camels, are they foul smelling?   All I know about camels is the ones at our local zoo when I was a kid.  Could not stand within 10 feet of them without gagging the smell was so bad.

Does anyone have the Barclay Carnival credit card that they use to purchase discounted gift cards from AARP or ALLSTATE?

Barclay will not allow me to use it when purchasing the discounted cards. Anyone have this issue?

No, no problem at all buying discounted carnival gift cards from AARP.   Used my barclay card, got only single points though - not double.  This was just recently, a couple weeks back.

    Celebrity Solstice 1551.. Good cabin?

Wish I knew more about the Solstice, haven't cruised on this ship.  I took a look at the deck plans, looks to me like you are below the Spa cafe and above another balcony.   Maybe others will chime in who can tell you more - even if there is food prep in the cafe hopefully it isn't a 24/7 noise situation like in the galleys.   Enjoy, it should be wonderful in an aqua class!

  4. Another thought on the motivation for hiring an attorney; it may not be for the purpose of securing a monetary award so much as  trying to sway public opinion.  The death of a child is about the worst thing a parent / other family can experience, and to have it be sudden, not the result of an illness ( no warning or chance to grieve & come to terms in advance)  avoidable makes it so much worse.   May just be in survival mode, trying to do whatever they can to put a different spin on it.  Hard enough to suffer such a loss in relative privacy but these folks have none.   Going to work, inevitable talk & then everyone shuts up when you walk into the room, even leaving the house to get groceries is going to be tough.

  5. Unspeakable loss to the  family and none of them will ever get over the horror, let alone the grandfather.  But they are now pointing a finger at the cruise line in their grief and loss.  I can't even imagine trying to deal with this let alone acknowledge his part in this.  You don't put a toddler up on a ledge or bannister or wherever this little girl fell from, and just let her balance without hands on.  You don't put a child up to "bang on the glass" for fun, glass can break.   Even if this is thick glass - I can't imagine teaching your kids banging on any glass window is allowed.

And yes I realize in  this instance the window was open where the child was placed.  Again, babies don't belong perched on a surface to balance or not.   Even falling in the other direction she could have cracked her head open.

  6. Another fan of the Spirit Class ships here.  I love that the Miracle has the most space per passenger ratio of their fleet.

Gatsby's Garden, a nice place to sit inside.   Nice wrap around panorama deck, library not just for books but for playing board games, good large serenity area, and the french door interior cabins are fantastic.   Not just a bit of natural light, but you can open those doors for fresh air.  For an inside cabin price!  How great is that?

The Farcus decor in the MDR is loud, but I don't mind it.   Purple and Vegas-y and out there, I wouldn't want to decorate my house this way (maybe for a party or halloween!) but I can enjoy it on a cruise.

  7. Lucky you, boating is so enjoyable.  Its been many years but long ago my ex & I would sail quite a bit in the San Juan Islands.  His friends had a 40' sailboat.    He took his friends with him when we split up, so no more sailboat trips for me.

On that particular cruise, I think it was around Vancouver Island - a guy from our roll call who is an avid photographer got a great photo of an orca breaching.

  8. I don't know anything about the central park rooms as I've not sailed on Royal.  But I can say that for me a balcony, and fresh air in the cabin is essential.  The cruise I booked in an ocean view room (window at the back of the ship, people walking by on the deck / no privacy)  was a disappointment.  I had read good reviews on the cabin but having the bit of light & feeling like people could look in the cabin if I didn't shut the curtains just didn't work for me.    Being able to walk out to a deck just isn't the same.   I almost didn't feel like I was on a cruise, my friend who cruised with me couldn't believe I felt that way but I did.  In the past I only booked inside cabins, but once I got used to the balconies it changed everything.

But that's a balcony overlooking the ocean.    I don't think I'd go for a balcony upcharge that overlooked a park area inside the ship.

  9. I've been called a couple times with upsell calls, about a week or two before sailing.

On the upgrade - I got the upgrade from hell on my first cruise.  I knew nothing and definitely not enough to see it on a deck plan.

I had booked an inside cabin, and it was a nice middle of the deck cabin.   I knew I was prone to motion sickness, my travel agent had booked this cabin for me.  I didn't know what cabins would offer less movement, but she did.   Then at check in, someone sweetly offered me an upgrade to a porthole cabin.  Of course way in front.  I was so sick, when we hit rough water it was like riding the maliboomer up and down.  Never, ever again.

How about Magic Balcony Cabin 7430? Wondering if the view is obstructed and if it is smoky? I have tried researching pictures of the Magic Decks but I am not a seasoned cruiser. Thanks for your help!

Have you already cruised or do you still need help?  Sorry for the lack of response, I'll try to help if it isn't too late.

  11. Also, for anyone just signing up for Rewards for Good, do not use any helpful promo codes to get extra points posted by well meaning people.  I did, in fact I believe a number of us did and lesson learned on  what a bad mistake that was.  They took away all my points, even the ones I got fairly by taking surveys.  Then they locked my account.  I ended up opening a new one and having to start over.

If you haven't stayed there (I have) then you really shouldn't pass judgement.  Granted it's not a Ritz Carlton.  But, you have to take in the entire experience not just the room.  We stayed in one of the officer's former cabins and it was rather large and full of nostalgia.  Considering you can walk to the Carnival terminal it's not a bad place for a one night pre-cruise stay.

Possibly, but after a couple ship tours where I saw the cabins, I can safely say I would not want to sleep there.

And Ritz Carlton is hardly my expectation on a pre cruise overnight.  It's an admirable ship and I admire its history.

I wish the owner would invest more into upkeep and keeping it at something approaching its former glory.

I always heard how good the reubens were so I got one.   The corned beef was so fatty I couldn't eat it.

Ew, that sounds bad.  The meat on board may be hit or miss.  Usually I can eat the bacon if they cook it extra crisp, but on one cruise it was disgusting.   It was on the Imagination & it was simply rancid.  I only wanted one or two pieces too, but the guy plopped a huge pile of on my plate before I could stop him.  All wasted except for 2 small bites.

As already mentioned, the ship was underway hours before you posted.

The ship didn't "break down" (implication being without power); the problem was stated as that it did not have top-speed capability.  If this malfunction (as best we know about it) had happened half-way through a transpacific cruise, the ship would have carried on at a lower speed, probably arriving late to the next/final port.  Annoying?  Perhaps.  But not terrible.

Engine problems and possibly steering problems necessitating a 2 tug escort.   If that were to happen on a  transpacific, in my opinion that's more than just annoying.  In any case glad its fixed.

  15. It's terrible for the present passengers who are on board, I hope they get whatever is wrong with the engine fixed soon so they can enjoy the cruise (or as much of it as possible) they signed up for.  But at least this isn't happening half way through the transpacific.   What a thing that would be to break down in the middle of the ocean.

A couple of years ago I cruised post surgery (not the same as yours) and the bonus of being waited on hand and foot far outweighed the fact our room may not have had my home recliner chair. Both you and your husband may benefit at this stage from a little TLC...Just not having to cook/clean/launder for a short while can be such a release...

On board wear your sling even if you don’t feel it is always necessary, it will alert others to be sensitive to your needs. Also don’t be afraid to ask for help. I really benefited from being lowered into the solarium pool via the ‘ducking stool’ post op! The staff could not have been more helpful and the gentle exercise in the pool really helped my recovery.

This is excellent advice.  I remember after my first rotator cuff surgery, the challenges of being single Mom with one working arm.  I needed my son to help hold the pan in the sink while I scrubbed.  Or the night I spent at my Mom's house fresh post op, not wanting to disturb anyone but struggling to get the ice cubes out of the tray in the middle of the night.  Ended up wacking up the plastic tray against the sink trying to get them out.

That surgery had an excellent recovery though.  Then I needed the other side done.  Same surgery & same surgeon 15 years later - I nearly got a frozen shoulder.  Despite lots of PT.   He said every surgery is different & even young patients with both shoulders done at the same time can have one turn out with a more difficult recovery than the other.  I  tend to think age made the difference.    I don't know if you are still attempting to cook & clean during your recovery, but if you are then maybe a break from all of that will be helpful on the cruise.   Ask your surgeon if massage therapy on board the ship will be acceptable, of course the masseuse will need to know your  recent surgical history & be cautious of the shoulder & arm.

  17. I love the touring the Queen Mary and appreciate the historic aspect of the ship.  That said, I would not want to book this as a hotel to stay in.   Pre-cruise I have zero expectation for a luxury hotel experience, but the rooms make a best western or la quinta look like a 4 star hotel.

Me, too.  We live in the desert with evaporative cooling rather than air conditioners.  Our house cools down to 85 degrees when it's 105 or more outside.  Any butter left on the counter would be completely melted.

I use a butter bell for my butter at home.  It's fine unless the house or kitchen hits 90 degrees, at that point the butter falls into the water in the butter bell.  Most of the time though it works fine.

  19. For those still looking, I've used Quality Town Car for transport to / from airport.  It's a very good service.  They used to be called Seattle  Town Car and Airport Shuttle, changed the name due to too many companies with nearly identical business name & mix ups.

  20. I may be the sole discenting voice, I would exercise some caution.  DR does have issues with crime, and if you are leaving the port area on your own I would be careful.  I went with my big strapping adult son, and we took a carnival excursion.   Have friends who have stayed in AI's in the Dominican Republic who did not research and were surprised at how the nice resorts had armed guards patrolling outside the walls of the resorts.   The roads themselves can be hazardous, was surprised to see people riding 3 on motorcycles, passing cars on the highway in heavy traffic.

  21. Can't help on the walking tour, but be sure to stop by Le Guerrerense for tostadas.  It is a street food cart, although they have a sit down restaurant as well now I hear.  It has the BEST fresh seafood, it's busy and delicious.  Some ideas on what to order, https://www.forbes.com/sites/geoffreymorrison/2018/03/16/la-guerrerense-the-best-food-in-ensenada/#afd33f65c115

Here is a site that has walking tour / Ensenada info as well as a map.  http://www.cruiseportinsider.com/ensenadaonyourown.html

You can see from this map of La Guerrerense it should be close to where your ship is docking.  https://www.google.com/maps/place/La+Guerrerense/@31.8614761,-116.6231467,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xb733b3dee44c57c7!8m2!3d31.8614761!4d-116.6231467
