  1. OK, I am in a similar position. We made our final payment of the Carnival cruise 11/17/12. Wife just visited her dad who has alzheimers and he is in really bad shape. Cruise is for Jan 20. Was told we had so many days to get insurance after our final payment but what I am reading on here is we should have purchased within so many days of our initial deposit. Is there any coverage out there to protect my family (2 adults, 3 kids) in case my FIL dies shortly before or while we are on our cruise?

You're asking about coverage on a pre-existing condition.

Hopefully Cruiseco will be on shortly, but I believe (disclaimer) that since you are past final payment date and have made final payment, it is too late to purchase coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Most insurers require purchasing insurance 14 to 21 days after initial deposit to waive pre-existing conditions. A couple will even waive up to date of final payment. Not sure about after final payment

I don't mean this to be heartless (I can't think of another way to say it), but, is the doctor indicating that his passing is imminent? or is he just going down hill and you're concerned about the timing? I ask this because if the answer is imminent, then I'm not sure any insurer will help protect your risk.

Maybe the below link can help you

  2. My Wifes Dad is in a nursing home and is suffering badly from Alzheimers. He could pass away at any time. what Travel Insurance company is best to insure with in the event he passed away before the cruise or while we are on it. We are scheduled over Christmas December 22-29. Traveling out of San Juan.

We are from the Midwest area. (Kansas City)

We did buy trip insurance on the airline tickets. But not the Cruise. Our cruise was purchase at Costco Travel.

Is there such a thing as "Need to Cancel any Reason? " coverage?

    Unfortunately you're in a pickle.

For most insurances to cover pre existing conditions or to get cancel for any reason, you needed to purchase within X number of days after your cruise deposit.

Another important question is regarding you're FILs current status. Are you thinking he may pass at any time? Or have the doctors said that time is short?

Insurance companies protect against unforeseen events, not imminent events.

Costco, where you bought your cruise, sells excellent coverage for their members. Talk to them. Also look at the cruise lines insurance. Some have good cancel for any reasons policies, however most cancel for any reason policies only reimburse a credit of 50 to 75 percent and you must cancel within 48 hours of beginning of trip.

  3. Just wondering which policies cover air evacuation off of the ship if required? Many of the policies I have had a look at are questionable with respect to this item. Have any Canadians confirmed this item in their policies or had the unfortunate need to be reimbursed for this item?

    Thanks.

Due to the hazardous nature and specialized training required, I don't believe there are any private companies who evacuate passengers off of cruise ships. All evacuations are only for severe emergencies and if required are performed by Government navies or coast guards.

If you are evacuated by the US Coast Guard, there is no charge.

  4. Since I have a Global Access Number and went thru the process, app., intereview person to person, pictures, finger prints and all, I will use the number given and see if it works, We also went of the Global Access site and requested a card to be sent out. When we got our Goes on our passport, over a year ago, they did not give out the cards. We know the Global (goes) we have used it several times when returning to the United States. If all goes well, we should be able to get thru the airport, TSA so much easier. THANKS FOR YOU HELP.

Remember that not all airlines nor all airports are setup to use the pre screen.

Just left Seattle on AS and went through the pre line. Then flew from STL to DFW on AA. St. Louis didn't have the pre screen line, DFW did, however my boarding pass and the GOES card I showed for ID didn't help at all.

  5.

Someone mentioned "GOES card". GOES is the application and enrollment process for Global Entry, Sentri, and Nexus, not a card. If the end result is Global Entry, it's part of your passport, not a separate card.

    :)

You do get a card that is embedded with an RFID chip. Says Global Entry on top. Has your picture along with name, DOB, and expiration date.

On the back it has your ID number and ,,, interestingly enough,,, a Sentri logo and a Ready Lane logo.

When approved,,, CBP puts a sticker in the back of your passport. Then they mail you within a couple of days your Global Entry card. When you purchase airline tickets, there is an area listed as "Known Traveller Number". This is where you put your Gloabl Entry number. If the airline is part of the program, this number will be embedded in your boarding pass.. When you approach the TSA people who verify your ID and boarding pass, they scan your boarding pass and that is when they direct you to a special screening (or lack thereof) line.

  6. Ok - I have a question. When you log in to fill in the application it asks for your Last/Paternal name ... then it asks for your Maternal name. But it doesn't ask for your current last name. Where do I put my current married name and maiden name? My married name is certainly not the name of MY father.

Then I read that I can sign up for the NEXUS card for an additional $50 BUT if I sign up for NEXUS first, then I can automatically get the GOES card for no fee. What I can't find is how long the NEXUS card is valid for before the next fee is due.

I would "think" that "Last/Paternal" would be your current last name. "Maternal" would be your maiden name.

Nexus is only good for crossing the Mexico or Canadian border by car. ( as I understand it). There are 2 concerns though with the Nexus card.

    1. The car also has to be registered in the Nexus program. (That would be each and every car you might be using)

    2. Every passenger in the vehicle MUST have a Nexus card also to utilize the Nexus lane.

  7. WOW

5 minutes to get through TSA security. My new membership number was embedded. TSA screener who screens your ID and boarding pass sent me to a separate line.

Only 1 person ahead of me. Didn't have to remove shoes. Didn't have to remove belt. Didn't have to remove laptop ot show 311 items. Just place my carry on on the belt and walk through.

    :D :D

  8. Good to know ... thanks.

You know, I just reread your question. Your complete question had time from application to time I had interview and received your card.

I answered 6 weeks. Sorry, that was from on line apply to interview to verbal approval for program. I still haven't received my card

  9. Follow Up

June 6th I had my interview. When they asked about any court appearances in my past, I admitted to a DUI in the 90's that was plea bargined down to a wreckless.

Well, I was required to go back to the court and provide a "Certified Court Docket" to the CBP agent.

June 7th, went to the court, paid $5, got the document, and hand delivered to CBP.

    Approved

    Not impressed yet.

Flew on the 8th on AS.

Put number in where "Known Traveller" goes. Checked in.

Went to airport, walked up to TSA, had to go through regular line.

After I went through, I asked one of the TSA supervisors what happened.

He told me that the "Known Traveller" info is embedded in the bar code on your boarding pass. Embedding the number is up to the airlines computer system and how long it takes for the airlines computer system to "update" your new information.

BTW, the airline and the airport are both part of the program.

I fly out again on Sunday, so, we'll see.

  10. I thought about it as well as a Nexus card for the Canadian/US border crossings and decided against it. Call me paranoid if you wish, but I don't want to give out any more personal information than I have to. I get fingerprinted for work annually but am not too wild about having it done where/when I don't have to.

    And that's fine. I understand.

For myself, the govt already has my fingerprints on record. From my military days, to my booking, to my RapidGate authorization, what's one more. Especially if I can knock an hour wait at Immigrations or just walk through TSA at airport.

  12. If I may ask,,, what was the timeline from when you applied, to the interview, to card in hand?

    Just a follow up

About 2 weeks after submitting my application, it was processed and I can now schedule an appointment. Soonest date available is early June.

  13. Besides the expedited arrival into the US for immigration and customs, those in the trusted traveler program often get expedited security screening at many airports (it is not "guaranteed" but has been possible for me all but one time so far). The number of airports and number of airlines participating is increasing fairly rapidly. On multiple occasions I have been able to leave my coat and shoes on, as well as leave my liquids and laptop in the bags then just walk through the metal detector. Such a breeze and worth it IMHO.

  14. So I've been reading all your posts, So getting the Cruise Insurance Offered is not good to get? or do you get the Cruise Insurance and also added coverage?

    Thanks

Rarely both (if ever). It's an either (cruiseline Insurance) or (3rd party insurance).

Whichever provides the coverages you need at a cost you're comfortable with.
