I wanted to write a short review of our cruise on Mariner on November 25, 2019. This was our first time on Mariner, and we loved the ship. We had an interior room on Deck 7. Our stateroom attendant was amazing. We did not try any specialty restaurants, but there were always people trying to sell you on them. We ate breakfast in Windjammer daily and the breakfast was always exactly the same. We enjoyed eating, but it was a little crowded. On several mornings, the guy came over asking people to vacate the tables once they were done to allow seating for those who were waiting. We only ate lunch on the ship on the first day and the sea day, both in the windjammer. Lunch was always pretty good too. We ate in the main dining room 3 out of 4 nights. The dining room wasn't crowded at all. We had a table for two. Our dinner took between 30 and 45 minutes. It began at 8 and we were always done before 8:45. On the last day, we had dinner in the windjammer. It was around 8:30 and they were out of turkey. Since it was Thanksgiving, we were looking forward to the turkey. I mentioned it to the guy walking around and he didn't think they were out of turkey. However, after he realized they were out of turkey, he walked down to the main dining room and brought us up two plates of turkey. We were very surprised by his gesture.
We didn't buy the drink packages because we have the diamond drinks from 4:30-8pm nightly as well as the three drink vouchers. We also didn't buy the Internet package. We used it twice with our free "diamond" perk and the service was very slow. It took a long time to load email, social media, etc. We enjoyed the nightly events in the diamond lounge. On some nights, it was really crowded and other nights, it was empty.
We skipped all the shows on this cruise. The main act was a juggler and we have seen him on 2-3 cruises before. We didn't go to any of the comedy shows or musical performances. We did attend the Quest. This was the same old quest that they have been doing since I attended my first quest 10 years ago. I wish they would try some new quests instead of always ending with a bunch of guys parading around in women's bras and makeup.
We spent a lot of time in the solarium. We found chairs there on each day except the last sea day. I ended up by the dunes and there were plenty of chairs not being used in that area. We also tried to go to trivia a few times but the trivia locations were very small. If you didn't arrive early, you didn't get a seat. In Nassau, we booked an all inclusive beach day at the Rui resort. It was easy to get a taxi over to the resort and we enjoyed our day there.
Cococay- I may be in the minority here, but I miss the old Cococay. We got off the ship around 10:30 in Cococay. We took the Tram and got off at the beach stop by the construction and looked for chairs. We were not able to find two chairs together. We walked around for about 30 minutes including going over to chill island where we were also unable to find two chairs together. I finally asked the cabana attendant for some advice on finding chairs. She suggested we walk around the construction to an area of south beach that was just re-opened. We did find two chairs there-- right next to a backhoe that was digging up sand the entire day. The smell in this area of the beach was horrible. It smelled like rotten eggs. We ended up leaving after about 20 minutes. By noon, the entire area in front of where we had been sitting was nothing but nasty brown seaweed. Eventually, we found two chairs over on chill island near an area of water where you could actually swim. We did not enjoy our day in Cococay at all. I hope it gets better as the construction finishes. The old Cococay area was so much prettier and enjoyable to me. Like I said, I'm sure I am in the minority here. We did enjoy our lunch on the island from one of the little shacks- we had burgers and chicken sandwiches.
Getting on and off the ship was very quick. We got to the port around 11 and we were on the ship within 10 minutes. We carried our own bags off the ship the morning of departure. We left the room about 8:30. We had passports so we were able to skip the line and do facial recognition. The whole process was quick and we were waiting for our bus to the Radisson by 9am.
Overall, we loved the ship. If you have any specific questions, just let me know! Happy Thanksgiving!
