  1. Oh, I just remembered something I didn't mention earlier...we take a small fan because the cabins are never cold enough for us. We used to put it in our checked luggage, but the last time we did that, my luggage was taken to the naughty room and my fan was removed. Couldn't get it until debarkation day. After 20 something cruises of packing that dang fan! Now it goes in the carry on.

As for packing early, I don't...I do it the day before we leave for the cruise. I have a check off list with everything that goes and we go so often that I just have "cruise" stuff ready to go...first aid kit, toiletries, clothes specifically for cruising, in fact, my large suitcase stays half packed and ready to go. I grab the cruise clothes from upstairs and pack them in the carry-ons and we're ready to go.

  2. On the Liberty in January it was the cooler/beach bag. I don't like it and am hoping for the tumbler in Sept. on the Fantasy. They didn't have it last year and we got the caps, which I don't wear so my husband has two. I asked if I could trade for something else and she brought me two beautiful silver picture frames and wouldn't take the caps, so I have both. I don't think we'll ever get the tumbler!

  3. Did you put a hold on your mail and newspaper? Call the police for a zone check while you are gone? Have a neighbor watching the house and/or picking up paper and mail? Passports and cruise docs in a handy to get to place and not inside your luggage or carry-on? Leave info with family member or neighbor on how to reach you on the ship in case of an emergency?

  4. Don't hold your breath. We got two upgrades prior to becoming Platinum. That was before they started the upsell fairy.

    Since Platinum.....nothing!

We never got upgrades before Platinum, but our Liberty free upgrade in January was after we had been Platinum for a year. Another poster said they'd booked through a TA and they had to make the changes, but we had booked with a TA when Carnival called us and made the change for us.

  5. We were in the lounge in Miami a couple of years ago and when boarding for Platinum/Diamond began, everyone went at the same time. The FTFF people pushed their way to the front of the line and no one stopped them. It is my understanding that it's Diamond first, then Platinum, then FTFF. That is the order it went the next time we went out of Miami. Guess it depends on the person taking you.

  6. Although we just grow up learning this stuff in the South, courtesy should be the norm no matter where you live. In my opinion, it is slowly becoming a thing of the past. I know there are courteous, kind people everywhere and there are also rude jerks everywhere, but courtesy will get you a lot farther no matter where you live.

  7. I quess you aren't aware if the extras in the priority lounge. The slippers, complimentary massages from the spa staff and my favorite, the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies!

We must be going on the wrong ships -- have never had the slippers, complimentary massages or cookies in the lounge...

But I like the lounges and being able to drop off our carry-ons as soon as we get one instead of dragging them around with us until 1:00. I like the priority tendering and my special window at Guest Services. Dang, after buying all those cruises over the years, I deserve something, don't I?

  8. Don't forget to get your pedi and mani BEFORE you leave. Much cheaper at home than on the cruise.

If you're looking for suggestions on what to take, in addition to all the above items, we take a small fan because the cabins are never cold enough for us. Sometimes we leave for the cabin steward if he wants it. We, too, take a flashlight in case the power goes out. The flashlight came in handy when we went to Hawaii a few years ago in the lava tube, so you never know when you may need it!

I used to take a nightlight, but now we just leave the light on in the bathroom and leave the door cracked open.

  9. Personally, I really like the Fantasy because she is smaller. She may be old, but it's still a good ship, same entertainment, and same great food as the larger ones. The only downside for me is the ports of call. Nassau and Freeport are not my favorite places to visit, but again, that's my opinion...other people love those ports. We, too, have an easy drive to Charleston from Charlotte and have no complaints with the terminal. It's always been quick and easy for us.

We book the Fantasy when we need a short get away and actually have booked it for September. Instead of Freeport, it's going to Coco Cay which we've been to years ago on the Fantasy and I'm looking forward to being there again. Old and small are not necessarily bad things.

  10. Always take others' personal opinions with a grain of salt, that's what they are -- someone's personal opinion.

We've had good and bad sailings with every cruise line we've been on, but I wouldn't bash any of them and we still sail on all of them; we happen to prefer Carnival, and we've had some bad service on Carnival, but that happens -- everywhere. Even our favorite restaurant at home is not always consistent.

  11. 1. I now usually shower in the spa. Showers are bigger and they have those nice plush towels...it took me maybe 10 cruises before I figured this out.

    2. Spend more time on my balconies. At first we didn't spend much time on them, but now we do.

    3. Stay on board in those ports we've been to 500 times...it's very quiet and you have the whole ship to yourself. If you've seen it all and done it all, just relax on board while everyone else is gone.
