  1. My understanding is that the NCL shore excursion requirement is in place for July and August -- for now. They are going to conduct cruises for those first several weeks, see how it goes, and then make decisions on the subject going forward. They may, or may not, continue that requirement. For now, it is not mandated past August as far as I know. We also were planning to fly in a few days early, like you. We were expecting an epic vacation. Not going to happen now. Very disappointing as this was to be my 60th birthday celebration. BTW, I received an email from NCL yest
  2. Thank you again for the excellent information. This is stuff we needed to know. I was aware that Hawaii had been requiring testing for entry to the state, but did not understand the difficulties travelling between islands. And we don't want to be part of the problem. We are willing to comply with whatever requirements are in place. We are just SOOO ready to travel again. We just want to GO. Thank you for this, Glitterbutton. I think we are going to follow your advice -- wait until the last minute to cancel. But with what we know now, I think we ultimately WILL have to ca
  3. Thanks for all the comments, particularly from those who have done this cruise before. It sounds like we are making the right decision. BermudaBound, your comments were very interesting. Of course the NCL rep last night assured me that our cruise isn't going to be cancelled, but we all know that may not be true. We are considering cancelling the cruise and just doing Hawaii on our own, renting a car and an air BnB, spending 3-4 days each on Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii. But it sounds as if we may not be welcome. Hmm. We have until May 17 before our final payment is due, so
  4. Well, there is no HOHO bus available at any port for our cruise as best I can tell. That's my complaint. There is no opportunity to "do your own thing" -- on a HOHO bus or any other way. NCL is telling me that the ONLY way to get off this ship during this cruise is if you pay their price to go on one of their excursions. From what they told me last night, we will simply not be allowed off the ship, except if we are on a paid NCL excursion. That is a deal breaker for me. The Hawaii cruises are already exceptionally high priced. Adding to that the lack of flexibility an
  5. We are booked on the Pride of America July 31 Hawaii. I was excited about our extended balcony lido deck cabin. Was happy to hear the news that NCL is petitioning the US government to let them start sailing in July. And happy with the 100% vaccinated guest and crew requirement. We absolutely are on board with being safe. Can't wait to start cruising again!! But we are almost certainly going to cancel due to the NCL shore excursion requirement. I called NCL tonight to confirm what I read on the website: that passengers will ONLY be allowed to debark as part of an offici
  6. Explorer dry dock has been put "on hold" indefinitely. Not sure it is going to happen this year at all. The ship is currently in Bonaire. She should have been in dry dock already in order to be ready for the summer season. Edited to say, one cruise tracker I checked said bonaire, but cruisemapper shows Explorer being off the coast of Florida. Either way, she is in the Western hemisphere and has not made her way to Europe for the dry dock.
  7. We are booked on a B2B Eastern/Western Mediterranean July 2020 on the Explorer. Our final payment is due in about a week. For the past several weeks, we have been in "wait and see" mode. I have been leaning toward making our final payment and then let RC cancel us if necessary, and we would take the FCC. But at the same time I was hoping we would still be able to cruise and the FCC was just a backup plan. As this thing has dragged on, I think it is becoming less and less possible that we will be able to sail, in no small part because we are flying to and sailing from R
  8. Sorry if this has already been discussed and I missed it... Just wondering if there have been any reports about this family, and specifically the step grandfather, having cruised before? Are they novice cruisers? Or have they been on other ships where they might have encountered very similar ship design as far as the windows are concerned?
  9. I haven't been on this ship and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Squeeze bar serves fresh fruit juices and smoothies, appropriate for kids.
  10. I agree. Here is a quote from the step grandfather: "“I remember trying to find her on the floor and then I saw her fall. I saw her fall the whole way down,” the grandfather told CBS through tears. “I think for a while I was just in shock.” This is from this online story https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/grandfather-charged-toddler-s-cruise-ship-fall-says-i-thought-n1091321 Now, if it was impossible for him to lean out the window, as he and the attorney are claiming and the staged photos attempt to show, then HOW did he see her "fall the whole way down"? Unfortunately every thin
  11. Yes, I'm confusing the ship with land based casinos which often have slots at the bar. The Carnival rep that I was speaking to yesterday did tell me there was a 15 drink limit with this DOU offer. Good info from everyone. Thanks for your help.
  12. Would it be uncouth to sit at the bar and feed a $20 into the machine and do a spin or two, order a drink, and then cash out and leave as soon as you get your drink? We often like to gamble at the bar, because you get faster service. Alternatively, could I sit at a slot right next to the bar, order a drink and tell them, I'm playing right here?
  13. So if the drink is free, would you consider $1 per drink to be an adequate tip?
  14. OK thanks everyone! I thought DOU always had a gambling threshold you had to meet before being eligible. This is a nice perk that I wasn't expecting. Good to know!
