The problem is that cardboard has implications too. Paper products require more energy and greenhouse emissions to make. The real issue with plastic is proper disposal. Litter. Paper has an issue too, carbon emissions. That is why I said earlier I am agnostic on the issue of plastic straws. The only effective answer would be not to use straws at all. We could say go back to glass milk bottles but then that would likely raise other issues. All that sea glass because glass was littered. Now, the issue has come up that China does not want our trash anymore. Recycling costs have gone up. Some communities have now stopped recycling because they can’t afford it. A solution that seems like a solution, eliminating plastic straws or plastic egg cartons may make people feel good but may not be a real solution.

In our community we have a government sponsored recycling problem.  Except, they don't accept glass containers, as there is not a viable market for them (according to the powers that be).  Glass is infinitely recyclable, either as other glass products or as ground up "sand".

If we should be concerned about cruise ships use of straws (which are either incinerated on board, or off loaded as a compacted bundle of trash), I think that you should watch the cruise ship re-provisioning activities when in the home port.  Each pallet of food or other products that comes on board is wrapped in miles and miles of plastic wrap. All of that plastic wrap SHOULD be collected and recycled, however, I have seen lots of it blowing around on the pier and it ultimately ends up in the sea. Fresh produce is delivered in boxes and trays that are made from cardboard, but the cardboard is usually coated with a thin layer of plastic to make them water resistant.

Plastic is everywhere and the banning of straws won't have a significant impact one way or the other.  BTW, I don't use any kind of straws.

  2. The primary reason that the electrical outlet is on the ceiling is to ensure that you don't drop an electrical appliance into water in the sink and electrocute yourself. I don't know what the allowed amperage for these outlets is, but they should handle just about all items you wish to use, except high wattage items like a hair dryer or space heater.

Do suite guests still get to use the luggage valet service for free?

We got luggage valet for free (Royal Suite) on Equinox last April.  However, I had to ask the concierge for the paperwork and the terms as no information was provided in the cabin.

I've seem both a crock pot and a coffee pot in the naughty room. Once saw a recliner on the luggage cart at debarkation. Yes, a recliner.

We have observed, on cruises that leave and return to Puerto Rico, the locals will book the cruise and when in St Thomas will do their back to school shopping (I guess wider variety and cheaper prices).  They will come back onboard the ship with bags and bags of clothes, food, and just about anything that you can imagine.  I asked one of the staff why they did this.  They said it was cheaper to take a cruise than to fly to St. Thomas and that they cruise ship did not limit how much they could bring back onboard.  Plus, they got a nice cruise ship vacation thrown into the deal!

Someone once compared the quality of the in-stateroom binoculars to two empty TP rolls taped together.  Perhaps it was you?   Anyway, I remember I smiled when I read the post.

We generally book Aqua, Sky Suites and Celebrity Suites, and every pair we have encountered were worthless. Make sure you take your own.

I have found them to be of such poor quality that they are not even worth stealing! LOL

  6. My DS has, and received, the whole Chauteaubriand dish.  I personally think that the steaks in the MDR tend to be slightly overcooked.  I usually order Medium Rare and ask for it to be a little more on the rare side.  If it is too rare, it can always be sent back but I have never sent a steak back.

You can also ask your room attendant for ice twice daily (morning and turn down) as it melts it can give you cool water for overnight.

I would not drink water out of the ice buckets (water that has sat overnight)  I know that when they take the ice buckets away to fill, you do not always get the same one back.  I am unsure as to how (or if) they sanitize these ice buckets.

  8. We use the generic form of Bonine.  It is called meclizine.  We buy it at Wal-Mart, over the counter(non-prescription).  It comes in a 100 tablet bottle and we each use one -half of a tablet each day before bed.  If the seas are rough when we get up in the morning I will take another half of a tablet with breakfast.  If you take too much, it will make you drowsy but then there is nothing wrong with a little nap!
