  1. It’s finally here! We are getting ready to set sail on the Vision of the Seas 12-night Mediterranean and Greek Isles Cruise round-trip from Barcelona June 11 - June 23, 2019. We are flying out of Tampa today for an overnight flight to Barcelona where we will spend three days before we board Vision of the Seas for twelve more days! Background: My husband and I have sailed with Royal Caribbean 15 times for a total of 91 nights at sea with Royal. This will be our 16th cruise with RCCL and the cruise where we make Diamond Plus. Yes, I know. We’re excited too! All together, we’ve taken 35 cruises for a total of 249 sailing days and we have enjoyed cruising with Royal, Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian, Disney, and Holland America. I always say that we’ve never had a bad cruise. Not one. There are things we enjoy about each cruise and each cruise line, and for the most part we are pretty easy to please. There have been minor bumps and snags along the way, but I figure those make for the interesting travel stories. I’m Angela and I’m in my mid-40s. My husband, Mark is in his early 60s and we enjoy cruising as our vacation of choice. We looked at booking this cruise when it was released a little over a year and half ago. We celebrate our 20-year wedding anniversary June 12, 2019, and wanted a special cruise this year. The first Royal Caribbean ship we ever sailed was the Sovereign of the Seas in June 2000. It was our one year anniversary and our very first cruise. We were hooked. I remember that ship seemed huge. We drove up to the cruise terminal in Port Canaveral and I recall saying something like, “Oh my God look at it! We are going to be so lost!” It’s hard to believe the size of the ships have increased SO MUCH since then. We’ve sailed on the Sovereign, the Legend, the Vision, the Grandeur, the Rhapsody, and even the Enchantment (both before and after the stretch) before we “graduated” to the bigger Freedom, Oasis, and Quantum Class ships. But here we are…back to the smaller and more comfortable size ship where we first started cruising. We are both kind of looking forward to seeing what it feels like to come back to this size.
  2. Good evening, fellow cruise critics! We leave tonight for San Juan! This is us: Left to right is my 24-year-old daughter (Emma), myself (Dina), my hubby Peter (not making this trip sadly, kinda long story short, he can't miss work) and my 22-year-old son (Joey). This photo was taken last week at the Gateway National Park at the top of the famous arch. Joey and I are doing a pretty good job masking our horror and terror caused by the incredibly rickety tram ride to the top. We were in St. Louis because Joey just finished up earning his undergraduate degree out there, so we went to the commencement festivities. Of course every great graduate deserves a phenomenal present, and Joey earned this cruise! (See how I rationalized that😜?!)
  3. The "Way To Early To Be Thinking About This" gathering of thoughts from you experienced people! Both options for winter 2020/21 Option #1 - 7 nights from San Juan - Freedom (Post Amped Up?) - St. Thomas/ St. Kitts/ Antigua/ St. Lucia/ Barbados Option #2 - 9 nights from Miami - Explorer (Recently Drydocked?) - Labadee/ Aruba/ Curacao/ Bonaire The equalizer would be flying into San Juan a day or so early, so both vacay's approx. same length. We did the ABC cruise last winter and loved it, but some of the reports about recent Bonaire itinerary changes have made us a bit nervous. We have not done the "Saints" before. We favor ocean based excursions/activities over land based ones. Prefer using local based operators for these. (yes we know the risks!)
  4. #1 Because you haven’t done those islands, San Juan is a beautiful place to add a day, and if anything goes wrong and your itinerary ends up being completely different Freedom sounds like more fun than Explorer to be stuck on!
  5. I am sure these questions have been asked but I cannot figure out how to search the boards. I bought photo package all prints. We leave in 14 days and I am thinking about switching to digital. The last time I cruised they didn't have unlimited photo package. We had to look for printed photos every day in a hallway on the ship and then we would purchase what we wanted and they had set prices. Cruise line decided the size of the photos (4x6, 8x10, etc). Now, do you view the photos electronically on the ship and decide what size you want? Or are they preprinted? Do they print as many pictures in whatever size you want? If digital, do they download the photos to your account every day - similar to Disney? If someone can walk me through the details of these photo packages I would appreciate it. I can't remember if RCI stores your empty luggage bags for you outside your cabin and then return the last night of cruise. Or do you store the empty luggage under the bed? Thanks in advance! I know these questions are answered somewhere on these boards - just no idea where!
  6. So we are going on the Freedom of the Seas this coming week and we are wondering if this cruise has an official cruise critic meet and mingle event sponsored by Royal Caribbean Freedom of the seas staff? If so when was it scheduled for as the ship is in port for 5 consecutive days beginning the morning of Day 2 (So no Sea day at the beginning of the cruise)? Thanks for the help and info.
  7. Freedom of the Seas for August 25, 2019 has the deluxe drink package for $44 today.
  8. Sailing Freedom in August out of San Juan. It doesn’t depart until 8:30pm. I’ve only done cruises that sail around 4 or 5pm. Does the later departure time mean a later check-in and embarkation time as well? Anyone have any feedback on this experience in San Juan? Just trying to plan our day.
  9. This is being reported on the current Navigator sailing and will be fleet wide (at least for Freedom and below classes) Junior suite cards are the standard blue Full suite guests cards are SILVER Pinnacle and Masters in Club Royale are GOLD This change took place last week

  11. I know there has been quite a bit of chatter about Ovation in Alaska and folks sailing later in the season have had a lot of questions, so I thought I would post some of my thoughts and experiences from our 7 day cruise that left on 5/31/19. Please feel free to ask any questions! Who was sailing: Our group had 14 people sailing together (not in one Stateroom 😉 ) from infant all the way up to senior. We had planned this for quite a while to celebrate a milestone birthday and most of the group has sailed RCCL a few times with about 1/2 the group being Diamond or above. My wife and I are in our early 40s and this is our second time sailing Alaska but our first time on a Quantum class ship. We will be Diamond on our next cruise this summer and have now sailed on every class of RCCL ship and have sailed on most major cruise lines. Most of our group (including us) live in the Orlando area. The Itinerary: This was a R/T sailing our of Seattle and after having done our last Alaskan cruise on a one way Vancouver to Seward itin, you can't help but miss doing Alaska that way. I'm not particularly a "nature" person, so Alaska once every 5 years or so is enough for me. That being said, if I was to do it again - it would have to be a one way itinerary... you just get so much more bang for your buck. Embarkation: Sailing out of a seasonal port is always hit or miss and this embarkation was a bit of a "miss". The ride share drop off and pick up area being 1/3 of a mile away from bag drop isn't great when a huge percentage of your guests are using that. Bag drop off was a complete hot mess - they were boarding a Celebrity ship at the same time and I would be shocked if there weren't quite a few bags dropped off in the wrong place. The main bag area was basically just a huge pile of luggage with no one around... no one to tip, no one to watch the bags... no one at all! This was just before noon - slightly earlier than we usually arrive. Then the line to get in the terminal was also complete chaos stretching way back into the bus loading area but since we dropped off our bags the person manning the line waved us into the line near the front... not one to argue but that shouldn't have happened. Once we got to the front of this line we realized it was just the passport and boarding pass check by the 3rd party security company which usually takes 2 seconds in Florida ports. Regular security and check in were fast enough since the line was all outside. Stateroom: We were originally in an inside stateroom, but I had done a minimum bid on an obstructed balcony ($200pp) and we won it about 5 days before the cruise! We were a little worried because our stateroom (6296) had some reviews that mentioned it being noisy. I even bought a white noise machine before the cruise because I am such a light sleeper. That being said we were VERY happy with our stateroom and had no noise issues at all! Love the layout of these quantum class cabins - so much storage, lots of plugs and plenty of room in the large bathroom. Our last few cruises were on older RCCL ships and this was a very nice surprise! We aren't picky with views - yeah it was obstructed but just having a balcony was really nice and when you are looking at mountains a lifeboat partially in the way doesn't really matter. The proximity to the hidden entrance of Two70 was HUGE. We used that tons to grab a snack at the cafe in Two70, get to Jamie's quicker, etc. I would book a stateroom in that area again in a heartbeat. Our stateroom attendant was fine - no issues but also really didn't see him at all. Kept the room clean and made an impressive towel animal of a cat, which was a first for me! Internet: OMG it was bad. We went into this cruise having read all of the reviews and expected it to not be great, but really had no idea how unusable it would be. With the surf and stream expect 1mbs-2mbs for the majority of your cruise with less than 1mbs upload. Twitter, basic email and messaging apps work, Facebook will kinda work unless you want to upload something or watch a video, Instagram really doesn't work at all for anything - even uploading a basic photo or watching stories. Want to stream something... HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA... good luck! This was by far the worst internet experience we have had in the last 10 (or so ) years of buying internet on cruises including the last time in Alaska. The Internet manger was *beyond* horrible to anyone in our group who went and complained, told people in our group that they were lying about speeds, refused to give any type of credit at all and it took 4 days of going to guest services to get a small credit back. With this all being said, I am not sure I would recommend just buying the "surf" package - it might throttle you even below the surf and stream people. Service In General: This is the first RCCL cruise where I felt almost the entire staff just didn't care. With the exception of the specialty dining rooms, everyone you encountered seemed apathetic to downright unhelpful. Everyone in my group felt this way and kept encountering different examples of it throughout the ship. It was really bizarre - not sure if many are at the end of their contract, if there were different expectations in Australia and Asia or if it is just the leadership of the ship not caring - but it was the first time I rated service on the ship as a 3 on the 10 point scale. Dining: We did the unlimited dining package and it was worth every penny. We got it during the Cyber Monday sale and it worked out to around $15pp per day which is awesome for the quality increase in the food. Service was great in all dining rooms (except Amber & Oak and when the manager of Izumi gave away our reserved table to another party and shrugged her shoulders), food was good everywhere as well. There was some confusion on if we could use it at the Amber & Oak pub for food (and a manager had to get involved) but they let us. Some in our party used it for "second dinner" sushi at Izumi each night after eating in a specialty dining room, so it really was "unlimited". Windjammer continues to go downhill, very few items for lunch (or second dinner) that were even remotely decent. I was hoping this was going to be slightly better than our last few cruises since it is a newer ship.. but nope. Entertainment: I enjoyed the Two70 show, Pixels and the other times the robo screens were used. The "Legs" show was also a bit above a normal cruise ship show and was entertaining (and not even remotely risque). I was bummed there was no Quest on this ship however. Trivia hosts were fine and the cover bands were really not good at all. Sports and Activities: I don't say this lightly, but some of the worst crew I have ever encountered on any ship on any line. The NorthStar was a complete cluster every time they ran it with tons of missinformation, closing early and then lying about it and crew that wouldn't even greet you or look at you when you boarded/rode. Anything going on in SeaPlex was a disaster with no attempt at crowd control, not even remotely enough times scheduled for demand and no attempt to be helpful or friendly. Really put a bad taste in our mouth every day we tried to do one of these activities. The Ship In General: I'll be honest... I am not sure I am a big fan of this class of ships. While it was in great repair, very clean and very "new", everything felt more like a high end hotel in Vegas and less like an RCCL ship. I would put it below Oasis and Freedom class if I was ranking them based on my personal preference. I really dislike that the ship seems to "close up shop" so early and there are venues that would be accessible on other ships 24hrs a day that are inaccessible on this ship. Want to play ping pong at after 11? SeaPlex is closed. Want to hang in the beautiful solarium and chat or play cards after 11? Solarium is closed. So many of the activities are also only accessible to a small portion of guests. iFly, SeaPlex activities like Bumper Cars, North Star, etc are tough to get into and/or get reservations for or are only offered a few times on your cruise. Think about the Oasis class where you have the zipline, mini golf, ice skating, carousel, etc - which everyone can easily do. It also really was frustrating how underutilized Two70 was - it is an amazing venue and it hardly ever gets used. How is there not a DJ dance party there every night using the lights, robo screens, etc? Juneau: We had great luck using Uber/Lyft to get to Mendenhall Glacier and back. It was about $45 each way for an XL which if you have 4-6 people will save you a ton of money. Walking out to nugget falls was just as fun as last time and the view is amazing. Was sad to see it continue to recede and significantly less chunks of ice in the surrounding water. I flew my drone around by the waterfall with no issues. Skagway: Last time we did the whole emerald lake, carcross yukon private excursion thing and had a good time, but we wanted to try the train this time. While it is a bit overpriced, if you enjoy train rides it is must do. The views are a bit repetitive but the narration was good and make sure you sit on the left side for the best chance to see the "sights". Victoria: This was our first time in Victoria and we absolutely loved it. We don't like to do ship excursions whenever possible, so we saved some money and rented a car from Budget for $45 CAD and drove to the castle and the gardens on our own. Saved about $130 for just us doing it that way and had a much better time than being herded in a shuttle bus. Taxis were $10 from the port to downtown and they take USD or CAD. You can also easily walk or take the shuttle bus which ends up being more money than a taxi if you have two or more in your party. Debarkation: We do the opposite of many and try and stay on as long as possible! Even though we had a low number we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast in Two70 and walked off around 10:15 with no lines at all. No lines for baggage and customs at that point either. There were still a ton of people on the ship so we were by no means the last ones off. Big cluster at ride share area with tons of guests arriving and departing at the same time. Overall we had a great time, but I would drastically adjust your expectations for service on the ship and internet speed.
  12. Freedom in a heartbeat! We have 5 booked on her right now. The Southern Caribbean with Antigua, St Lucia, Barbados is the best!!!! One I love those islands (except St Kitts) but 2, the more port days I can get to go to my wonderful gorgeous beaches, the happier I am. Would much rather lay on a beach in a gorgeous Caribbean island than sit at the pool on the ship.
  13. ssb, Is the contract and such for Terminal 3 all signed off and in motion? I've been waiting for some big announcement since last fall but keep hearing "in work" mostly. Carnival has no issues with placing their new ships in Galveston, like Magic, but don't know if RC has warmed up to it yet. Oasis 5 would be lovely. I've been on Oasis and will be on Harmony next month so Allure or Symphony or Oasis 5 would be awesome. I'm only 30 minutes from the port so quick drive instead of having to fly to the port for the big ship is my desire. As for Liberty...I've sailed her twice and love that class of ship too so hoping for another Freedom class to replace Liberty.
  14. Just came back from B2B on the Freedom of the Seas, in Junior Suite We stayed many times in JS on Oasis class and always received upgraded Bathroom Amenities But on Freedom after asking for it from Guest Services and Room attendant Supervisor we were told because the price for the Cruise on Freedom is cheaper than on Oasis Class We don't get the Upgraded Bathroom Amenities. is any body had the same experience? that is not consistent with the published policy
  15. When we snorkeled on an excursion in Grand Turk we were offered vests but we did not use them. Same thing on excursions in Grand Cayman and Freeport and an AI resort Jamaica. When I snorkel, I want the freedom to dive down the the reef to explore and take pictures.
  16. Are you looking forward to 2 sea days? Rome has lots to see but it is 1-1.5 hours from Civitavechia. If you are on a private tour make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get back to the ship as the traffic is horrendous and last year on Freedom the ship was 1 hour late leaving Rome waiting for ships tours and several people missed the boat. Livorno is very convenient for Florence and Pisa as RC usually use La Spezia now which is twice the distance from Florence/Pisa.
  17. We were on Freedom last year early October and there was Halloween themed decorations and I believe it was Wednesday that was designated as Halloween where the kids dressed up and there was candy given out. We will be boarding Vista this October and expect it will be the same type thing.
  18. Our one time in Jamaica was on the Carnival Freedom 8/18/2013. We will be heading there again this October on Carnival Sensation. We are still trying to figure out we will be doing there this time. We did enjoy Mystic Mountain and the Bob Sled when we were there though. We had 3 teenage kids with us we when went but I think I liked it just as much as the kids. "ontheweb" looks familiar to me too. Not sure if it was this cruise or another Carnival one though.
  19. The one time we sailed with Celebrity on the Equinox, we felt the entertainment in the theater was pretty close to what we were used to on the Freedom and Voyager classes of Royal Caribbean. No complaints Now, talking entertainment as a whole, well yeah there is MUCH less on the Equinox. No rock climbing wall, flow riders, water slides, ice rink, laser tag, Escape room, putt putt golf (all of which the newly Amped Navigator had for our 9 night southern route this past March) I do wish the Equinox had even a decent putt putt golf area, but not even that. We still filled our time relaxing on Celebrity and enjoyed it. We felt the service and food was a small, but noticeable, step up from Royal. I am a little concerned with bringing our kids on the Equinox this upcoming March. They are getting older and don't do as much of the "one and done" activities, but the fact it, Celebrity has almost nothing besides the nightly shows. Dan
  20. We had the UDP and drink package bundle last time we were on the Freedom. I loved it but my wife missed eating in the MDR. I'd get it again even if we only ate specialty dining 4 out of the 7 nights.
  21. On royal I've sailed the Mariner, Freedom, Liberty and Oasis. On carnival I've been on the Fantasy, Breeze and Magic. We tend to sail on the same ships multiple times. Recently we've been sailing carnival because of the price, but generally Royals product is Better. The big thing that Carnival has over royal is the great included food items like Guy's, Blue Iguana, Pizza.

  23. For a Grand Suite I know you get free internet on the Oasis class and Quantum class. There is conflicting information on whether it is free on the Voyager or Freedom class. Can someone who has recently cruised on the Voyager class let me know if you got free internet in a suite. Thanks!
  24. Magic, kismet, even “Harmony” That’s the way to describe my relationship with my travel husband, Randy. We cruised together by chance in April 2013 and we will cruise again by design on Harmony June 2nd, when we celebrate Randy’s 30th wedding anniversary with his real wife (and love of his life, Amy) But this story is about a travel marriage, a melding of two souls who love cruising and (this is important) the planning of cruises. A bond that could not be broken by thousands of miles and was solidified by hundreds of Friday night texts. (Travel planning night in both our households) My own dear husband of more than 30 years would hear a “ping” on a Friday night and say “oh, there’s your travel husband!” Neither Amy or Jeff has much patience for travel logistics, (although, and this is important, they both love the actual cruising🤣) but Randy and I are obsessed with it! And well, you have to get your needs met where you can, and that’s how Randy and I became “travel spouses”, sharing messages such as “should I pull the trigger on this Freedom cruise?” and “the drink package is 30% off, is it time to buy? “ and “what’s the name of that guide in Roatan?” We could spend hours online dissecting the minutia of the MDR menu, sharing frustrations over the Royal Caribbean website 🙄 or editing each others content for news letters or web reviews. How did it come to this!? Well, if you’d like to hear, I’ll tell the tale, and then you’ll have a good idea of what to expect when we share this review of our Harmony of the Seas 30 for 30 Anniversary cruise LIVE! (During making of this review, no actual marriages were harmed! Couples Randy and Amy <whom I also adore 😍> and Jeff and I are all still very happily married to our original spouses and plan to be, God willing, for many years to come!)
  25. Have done voyager and freedom class 5 times in grand suites never got free internet until we did oasis.
