  1. We cruise Royal without kids and have found it to be very enjoyable; we do generally avoid the school holidays. As mentioned, the outdoor adults only pool is unique to Icon at this stage (and in fact, was a last minute switch if I understand correctly). We are looking forward to experiencing it in May. As also mentioned, that leaves you with Icon or the soon to launch Star on the assumption this holds true on all Icon class ships. For the Oasis class ships, as also mentioned, that leaves you with only the Solarium for adults only pool areas. I will say we generally do not like "indoor" pools either, but while the Solarium is "mostly" closed but it's not entirely closed such that it provides sufficient airflow and openings not to feel claustrophobic like other closed pool areas. You could also take a look at the Voyager or Freedom class ships which have an open air solarium.
  2. Reports on Facebook say funnel is on fire again. Anyone on board can confirm?
  3. Winter bumped up against spring today with blustery showers. In a moment of clear skies, the neighbour kids ran across my lawn with their Nerf guns poised and I took a moment to pause at their freedom and joy. My own joy happens in a few days as I embark on the Breakaway for a B2B. This will be a different cruise as I am solo for the first week then have 3 friends (2 from home, 1 from Cruise Critic) joining for the second leg. The last time I was on the Breakaway she was the new, exciting, New York themed ship. We departed from Manhattan in a grey thunderstorm that made the decks incredibly slippery and watered down my Mudslide as we sailed past the Statue of Liberty in darkness. The Rockettes were on board and so was Julie Valeriote. She stopped by Le Bistro on our first night to ask us how we were enjoying the cruise, my dad said something glowing and we received daily treats from her for the rest of the week. This was during the days of the weekly fireworks at sea, where I (unknowingly) stood on deck under the launching of the fireworks and the inside of my head felt like the 4th of July in Texas. We went to Bermuda, saw a tornado, my dad caught a cold and snored so loudly I hit him in the head with a pillow. This was the inaugural journey of the notebook I made titled “John’s Complaint Book.” He documents sleeping out on the balcony one night but I’m pretty sure that part is fiction. It was also the trip where we learned not to take the public bus in Bermuda as it didn’t stop for us. For those of you who love my dad, here’s today’s dad story: At 2:00am on Sunday March 10 our clocks roll forward in this archaic tradition of controlling daylight hours for the agrarian society in which we no longer live. My dad heard it on the news on Friday and put his clocks forward then. Saturday morning he woke up a little tired and went for breakfast at what he thought was 7:00am. It was actually 6:00am and there were no staff and no food. The front desk concierge told him to go back to bed for another hour. Poor dad! Yes, he still buys himself one apple fritter a week, still can’t find jeans he likes and enjoys dessert more than the main course. He and I will be cruising together on the Jewel for our annual birthday cruise in six weeks. We went out for eggs Benny today then I took him to Purdy’s to choose his Easter treats since I’ll be away for Easter. On the Breakaway I have a Studio Cabin so there will be no cartwheels. I know this is a great disappointment to those of you who wanted to see a clumsy, manatee-shaped teacher librarian tumble through the cabin but alas. I bid on a balcony cabin but the upgrade fairy has not yet blessed my inbox. In the world of cruise ship math where one should always pack twice the underwear one thinks one will need, I just saved myself $620 by not getting the upgrade. Upgrade bid of $155 gets doubled for a solo cruiser so that makes $310 and I bid for two weeks. In this kind of new math, this means the spa package is now on the table. Speaking of new math, I am loving my new position. I’ve never loved a job this deeply and I have never worked this hard or had such long hours as this one. The students are phenomenal. Brilliant, bold, curious, voracious readers. At my previous school I usually had about 100 book sign-outs a day. At this school it’s close to 3000 over three days. The staff are the kindest, most caring, patient and amiable people with whom I have worked and I’m so incredibly happy to be there. That said, the workload is immense and I come home at night zonked. Oh wait, we need the new math tie-in. Here it is: Hard week+gift card= ostrich Yes, I bought an emotional support ostrich. Feel free to judge this. I am. As the (carry on only) suitcase gets filled this week I await the barrage of NCL safety videos. So far the only email has been this one I surmise that NCL continues their budget cutting manoeuvres by writing an email in size .03 font so as not to take up too much paper in this online communication. Oh wait… Our first day on board is St, Patrick’s Day. Good Friday and Easter Sunday also happen and it’s Spring Break. The ship is full full, not just a little bit full. The difference between full and full full is the amount of kids in the buffet who skip the cone and just hold the self serve ice cream nozzle right up to their waiting open mouth. As an introvert I sometimes make poor vacation decisions. On the upside, I made the good decision that seasoned professional cruisers (as opposed to those of us who wish to maintain our amateur status so as to compete in the buffet Olympics which involve such events as elbowing the omelette line budgers, judging those who dodge the washy-washy contingency and finally, avoiding getting a toe run over by a scooter on a mission for white chocolate macadamia cookies) to fly to New Orleans two days in advance of embarkation day. Yes, I have a list and beignets are on it. Happy International Women’s day (yesterday!) This librarian recommends these two gorgeously written and illustrated books
  4. Back to the positives. IMHO, The Meraviglia has one of the most attractive pool decks in the industry. In Nassau, I was able to check out 3 RCL ships (Freedom, Anthem and Vision) and the Carnival Elation.
  5. We sailed on the Carnival Freedom from March 16, 2024 though March 24, 2024. This trip was booked about three weeks before we sailed. We had airfare credits that needed to be used before April 1st so decided on a quick, inexpensive getaway. Grades are: A=Excellent; B = Good; C = Average; D= Below Average; F = Poor. Flight – Roundtrip on Delta. Uneventful, although the flights were completely full due to spring break. Didn’t cost anything due to flight credits. B Rental car – We did a one-way rental with Hertz. Hertz has an office right in Port Canaveral with a free shuttle to the ship. Super easy. Was $75 for the rental. A Hotel - We flew in the day before and stayed at the Quality Inn in Titusville, FL. $100 for the night and included free breakfast. There was a Cracker Barrel right across the street. Hotel was very clean, beds were comfortable, but it was very dated if that’s something that matters to you. We had dinner at Cracker Barrel and ended up going back there for breakfast the next morning as the breakfast area at the hotel is very small and it was super crowded. B Cruise – Overall we had a good time and thought what we got for what we paid it was a great value. $1,200 for an interior cabin on Deck 1. A Embarkation – We don’t like to wait in crowds so picked a later embarkation time. While we’ve sailed Carnival in the past, lately we’ve been sailing on Norwegian. We’ve found if we pick at time around noon, we can pretty much just walk through and walk on. When we arrived at the port there was a large group of people waiting outside, with some people being directed across the street. They were only allowing people with the correct boarding times to get in line to go into the building, so it looks like they are enforcing boarding time. The people being sent to line up across the street were people who arrived early. We got in line and once the line began to move we got through quickly and walked on the ship. We checked in at our muster station and then went to the Lido deck to get something to eat. Rooms were ready by 1:30 p.m. B Food – I think this is a very subjective category. Neither DH or I are picky eaters. For the complimentary dining we ate at the buffet, main dining room, Blue Iguana, and Mongolian Wok. We tried Guy’s Burgers on a previous cruise and didn’t care for them - - they were too greasy for us so we didn’t go there. I have a dairy allergy so we also didn’t get pizza (although it did look good). We also didn’t get anything from the Deli. The lines were always really long. One thing we found different from previous cruises was that if the menu in the main dining room didn’t appeal to you, you could go to the buffet and get something different. Here, the buffet was serving the exact same food. Overall, we both agreed the food was ok. There was nothing that we tried that was inedible, there were a few things that were really good (stuffed fried mushrooms, pot roast, vanilla French toast, prime rib, to name a few), but for the most part it was pretty average. C Sushi at Sea – We tried this on the night that we didn’t care for the dining room options and the same food was being served on the buffet. We both thought it was reasonably priced and very good. B (24 pieces for $25) Seafood Shack – We decided to try it for dinner one night and thought it was reasonably priced and very good. I had the fried clam strips with fries and DH had the combo (fried shrimp & clam strips with fries). B ($20) Service – Service on this ship was outstanding. Absolutely no complaints at all. Everyone we came in contact with was working very hard and still had a smile on their faces. Waitstaff remembered us by name, even if we only sat in their section once. Bar staff was attentive and we didn’t have to wait for drinks. A Cleanliness/State of the Ship – Another area where Carnival shined. Everything was super clean, and I didn’t see any areas that were in disrepair. A Entertainment – This is another category that can be very subjective. We saw the three shows with the singers/dancers and they were all good. We went to several comedy shows and while there were some jokes that fell flat, they were all funny. The electric violin players in the atrium were amazing. Rock band in the Red Frog Pub was good. We did not care for the singer in the piano bar. We went in a watched a bit of the karaoke, which was entertaining. We didn’t do any of the trivia, Deal or No Deal, Bingo, etc. so I can’t comment on those. B Turks & Caicos – We did a sail, snorkel, stingray trip that we booked through the ship. It was very good. Saw fish, coral and stingrays and the rum punch served after was really good. B ($180) Bimini – We took the free tram to get a bit of a look at the island and then just hung out on the beach at the end of the pier. Was a nice relaxing day. B Internet – Worked fine. No complaints from us. A ($95) Debarkation – Easily one of the fastest and easiest ones we’ve done. Literally just walked right off the ship. Never stopped walking. A Cruise ship shuttle back to the airport – Super easy. As soon as we exited the building it was right there to the right. Bus filled quickly and we were off. A While onboard we spent $361 (which included gratuities). We had about $100 in on-board credit which brought us down to $261. The rest was drinks, sushi, Seafood Shack and a pair of earrings I bought. Neither DH or I are big drinkers, but we drank what we wanted when we wanted. I didn’t buy the Cheers package as I know we would not have made full use of it. While the ship was full (spring break time), it didn’t really seem crowded to us. We hung out in the adults only area (Serenity) and really enjoyed it there. We were always able to find some shade and there’s a bar right there. Can’t comment on the spa or the kids club as we didn’t use either one. Overall, we had a good time and had a much needed break. We were happy with this cruise for the price we paid and felt it was a very good value for the money (total for the whole trip came to about ($2000, when adding in the meals at Cracker Barrel and the bus to/from our house to the airport and the Carnival). While onboard we did do a lot of comparing to Norwegian and it solidified for us that Norwegian is now our cruise line of choice for a variety of reasons. Would I sail Carnival again if the price and itinerary was right? Yes.
  6. Yes, I noticed this, but I know this perk wasn’t available to KEY guests on a recent Symphony or Freedom cruise.
  7. Ordered SimCorner sim card on the 22nd, received on the 26th. Registered the card. Installed in my phone. Got my UK phone number. Set up 3UK account. Turned off 3sim on my phone until my arrival in the UK. https://ca.simcorner.com/collections/europe-sim-card I'm with Freedom mobile ($30 for $60 plan) using esim, but Freedom's Roam Beyond Pass does not cover Norway and Denmark (more than half of my trip) and is $30 for 5gb. I bought SimCorner's 10gb for less (they have a 20% discount code for doing a survey atm). I've used this card twice before for month long trips with great service in every country, only used 5gb with constant google mapping, social media, whatsapp video calling etc. Able to get cell service sometimes far away from shore. This card has been great for me, also knowing there will be no extra charges and no need to fiddle with turning it on/off while on/off ship.
  8. We did Southampton - Singapore in a Deck 8 balcony and loved it. Perfect position and would recommend. We also had freedom dining but managed to get the same table each night when we wanted it and it worked really well. Not sure I would upgrade as the cabins are more or less exactly the same.
  9. Freedom has a new plan with roaming in 81 countries 15 gigs for $45
  10. P&O's Iona mainly doesthe Fjords out of Southampton, she's a relatively new ship but she's big and there's been problems with cancelling port calls and also the freedom dining and getting drinks served though I understand a lot of the issues have been smoothed out. Also take into account the time of year u plan to sail different demographic at diff times of year eg during school hols families of a ll generations outside school hols tends to be more retirees and a slightly older clientele. Look at the ages of reviewers will help. We did the Fjords on Cunard couldn't fault it and worth a look if u r a couple. Hth
  11. We are on freedom 1st - 4th April. Was set to be Coco cay Nassau Sea day Now looks to be Sea day Coco cay Nassau Oasis was already rescheduled from labadee to double Coco cay so it seems we clash with their 2nd day now instead of 1st. Guessing this is to allow for a different ship at Coco cay or nassau
  12. There will be a program for all children aged 3-17. If your children are on the boarder of being eligible for the teen club, you can try to ask politely if they can be moved up. That's really up to the people who happen to be working in the kids club. Sometimes they allow kids to move up or down, and sometimes they don't. If they are 12, you should also consider how much freedom you want to give them on the ship, including whether to give them sign in/sign out privileges into the kids club. My 13 year old just spent his last cruise with new friends and they took him to trivia and even a ballroom dancing class (we sailed Cunard). I saw him about 15 minutes a day even though we shared a room, and he had a wonderful time. Oh I forgot to mention you need to check the cancellation policies for private excursions since some are nonrefundable in Europe in case the ship doesn't dock. If you are getting private travel insurance it should be covered, but I don't know what NCL insurance covers.
  13. This looks interesting and I'd love to book it but it's still just shy of $100 a person. Has anyone done this tour and what do you think a good price is? We're still 5 months out hoping it goes down at least another $10 pp.

  15. I know I can use the unlimited dining plan at all the specialty restaurants, but is Giovanni's lunch included...specifically on embarkation day. I always thought it was reserved for "The Key". Also can I use UDP for the $7.95 room service?

  17. It’s a beautiful day here on Coco Cay. I’ve been missing getting my sunrise picture, so here was today’s sunrise Coco Cay is in the Berty Island group. Norwegian cruise line uses one of those islands as a private island also. And they were pulling in this morning. We are sharing the island today with freedom of the seas
  18. No matter what I try, I can’t get check in to work today. It’s the first day it should have been available. I tried after midnight last night and even today it says “check in now” but I keep getting errors. Trying to snag the first available check in time at the pier. Happened to anyone else?
  19. Off Wonder of the Seas yesterday, 1st cruise on an Oasis class ship. (Freedom and Voyager before, plus Odyssey) Wow it's a big ship. Using the stairs instead of the elevator was not the same. I got my bearing pretty quickly but I do the research before the cruise, my wife got turned around a few times. Room was 8548, forward not far from elevators. Bed was comfortable, tho I was hot under the covers most nights,GM - Are there any hot issues that I need to be aware of? slept just under the sheet. It was kind of weird how they made the bed, but it always felt like it was coming undone. Steward was really good and made our room up every morning, it seemed almost as soon as we were out of it because multiple times I went back what felt like only 30 minutes after my wife left the room and it was already cleaned. We loved the location for the ease of grubbing a drink at the Trellis bar on our way to and from the room. and since we had UDP getting to specialty restaurants. We would probably choose this deck again on an Oasis class ship. We had the UDP, 1 lunch, 1 brunch and dinner every night, besides just a few things at playmakers. we did Chops(2x) 150 CP(2x) Hooked, Giovannis for dinner and lunch, Mason Jar for brunch and dinner. Every meal was really good, Chops was probably our favorite, hto 150 was really good too. Hooked was a little slow. Mason jar brunch was better than dinner. Every specialty was packed, way more than on other cruises we have taken. I was told by our Mason Jar guy that our UDP package would work for the late night bites in the bar, but we never tried.. I think I saw someone get a bill taken care of after complaining about being charged in Giovanni's wine bar, but I don't know if that was true as I couldn't hear what was said. We ate breakfast in the Solarium Bistro most days, which by the end of the cruise everyone else decided to as well. Our two meals in the Windjammer(embarkation day, and 1 other breakfast) We both thought that the selection seemed alot smaller than what I remember pre Covid on Freedom and Voyager class. But that could just be changes made fleet wide and nor just Wonder. Sandwiches and salads at Park Cafe were pretty good. Sorrento's pizza was really good as well. The pool deck was crowded every sea day, but I didn't see a lot of chair hogs and I'm an early riser, I was out there at 7/7:30 every day reading my book. Almost every other set of chairs had someone holding the chairs and not just leaving towels. I did see a few, and I didn't see a crew member monitoring. I would say if you are out there before 9, you'll get a good spot. tho the cushioned chairs were reserved earlier. We like to lay out in the sun on our cruises and with this ship you had to think about where you were because of a lot of shadows. We grabbed the cushioned chairs on the risers 3 of the days. On the way down, they didn't get sun until around 9:9:30, on the way back, the bottom lost sun around 2:30(and earlier if you were higher). We didnt spend much time in the Solarium/ Bar service was great, not very many lines and lots of waiters walking around the pool deck. Mason Jar was packed every night listening to the country band(the lead singer was filling in and was really good, really nice guy) Music Hall was crowded the 2 nights we saw the temperature band, I thought they were pretty good. They ran out of Mich Ultra about 5 days into te 7 day cruise which kind of sucked, but I can make do with Bud Light. We saw intense(very good), the comedians(guy was pretty good, woman was not), piano guy in the Schooner bar the few times we saw him wasnt our type. The guy in the pub was decent the few times we were in there. We missed Voices and didn't want to see Effectors 2(we thought Effectors on Odyssey was really cheesy). Lots of kids on this cruise but they never really bothered us. My wife teaches kindergarten and we have 4 so while we cruise without them. We're pretty patient with family struggles. Kids being upset in a specialty restaurant don't bother us too much when we see parents trying their best. When you don't have the support they do the best they can. Others might have been annoyed, but we are on vacation and are able to drown them out. If you have any questions I'll try to answer them. Dan
  20. Yes, I know there has been a lot of reviews of Royal Loyalists doing other lines. I thought I would add mine here. It might be of interest to you, you may learn something or have your own commentary, so let it fly. Background fluff - We just got back from our first Carnival cruise after 21 Royal Caribbean cruise and thought I would relate the story here in the Royal part of the site. Some of you don’t like long signatures here in the forum, but for this story it will give you an idea of my cruise background and it was till this year only on Royal. We did 19 cruises pre covid and like many of you have several canceled between 20 and 22. Another thing we missed for a couple of years was the Ohio State Fair. When we returned to that in 2022, I walked by a booth that had a big Carnival Cruise line banner. We thought it was a Carnival booth, but it was actually some travel club (concierge service) that was selling memberships. They told us for watching their 90 minute presentation we would receive several things, on top of that list was a 3 day Carnival Cruise. We decided what the heck, we can sit for 90 minutes for a presentation for a cruise. I’ve heard of these type of deals and went in with an open mind. The company seemed decent and if you travel a lot, it might be worth it, but we decided to pass and received our compensation for our time (The cruise certificate with instructions on how to book it) At the time (summer of 2022) we had a cruise booked on Wonder for Late April of 2023, but life events and mainly my wife’s employment changed, so we canceled Wonder. After getting the cruise certificate I started browsing Carnival Itineraries. I was told I could apply my credit to any cruise and pay the difference. We figured this would be a fall cruise in 2023 and we like to visit the Orlando area to visit family and cruise out of Port Canaveral. I looked at a few ships all of out Florida, but picked Carnival Freedom out of PC going to Nassau (our 13th visit), Princess Cay and Grand Turk. The latter two being new to us. I do like to take pictures of our ship and other ships in port when cruising so I am familiar with many Carnival and other lines ships. Carnival has, of course that distinctive “Whale Tail” smoke stack, so it was somewhat ironic I picked the only ship in Carnival’s fleet that didn’t have one. In the past Carnival Freedom was in Grand Turk and her smokestack caught fire in May of 22. I didn’t show my wife this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiLLNw-Va9A But we did know she would look like this on our departure. I also started a thread called SGT SCHULTZ KNOWS NOTHING in the Carnival forum here on CC. I was very open of my cruise history and my openness to discuss anything with this ship and being a first timer on Carnival. I was greeted with enthusiastic tips and advice and much of it was very helpful. @ValerieJo I started it!
  21. we paid 77.99 pp last night. Pricey...yes, but we love the freedom of ordering what we want, when we want it, knowing it is already paid for. Besides, we love trying new drinks, and if we do not like it, we just order another type. Make it fun and realize you likely will not drink enough to recoup your initial price...but have fun.
  22. When are you going? I booked my reservations on the Perarl Harbor/USS Arizona site for $2.00. We just went there on our own. Much cheaper and more freedom on the time we wanted to spend there.
  23. Thank you for this write-up! Independence is our favorite ship. Just came back from cruise #5 on her and we've been on Freedom as well. We did Symphony once and while that was fabulous, it's not in our budget nor does it always fit well with the school schedule. We just love the flow and ease of Indy. There's always good music and never too crowded anywhere. I like that Adventure itinerary and we're in Hollywood so PC is still a good choice. I think I'll leave it in the running. Thank you!
  24. I just moved over to Freedom Mobile, and their roaming plans look pretty good. Disappointingly they don't support the one country we will be spending the most time in (Norway) on our upcoming cruise in May. Freedom mobile also has worldwide wifi calling. I will be able to use voice and text as if I was at home, using wifi or data. Our Previous cruise, I had signed up for Airalo, as it was the only eSIM I could find that covered most of the Caribbean. However, that cruise was shortened and re-routed the next day, and we didn't go to any of the countries that I paid for. Airalo refunded me in credit, which is more than I expected, so I am going to reload a European eSIM for our up coming cruise. I don't think Airalo is the absolute cheapest travel eSIM, but it is the one I have heard the most positive things about. I also have a few backup eSIMs with some extra data that were given away free. Not sure if any of those are still available now.
  25. Join the Bird live on a fast-paced weekend getaway on the Freedom of the Seas. When the Freedom OTS first set sail in May 2006, she was the large cruise ship in the world. In March 2020 just before the pandemic shutdown, Royal Caribbean spent $116M to amp the Freedom, updating her amenities and features to the latest in the fleet. The Freedom of the Seas boasts 1963 staterooms with capacity for 3926 guests double occupancy (4536 guests total) and 1365 crew. Complimentary dining venues include the Main Dining Rooms, Windjammer buffet, Sorrento’s Pizza, El Loco Fresh, and Café Promenade. Specialty dining venues include Chops Grille, Chef’s Table, Giovani’s Italian Kitchen, Izumi, Johnny Rockets, and Ben & Jerry’s. This 3-night weekend getaway includes port calls at Perfect Day at CocoCay and Nassau, Bahamas. Fri Miami, Florida depart 4:30 pm Sat Perfect Day at CocoCay 7:00 am - 5:00 pm Sun Nassau, Bahamas 8:00 am - 5:00pm Mon Miami, Florida arrive 6:00 am
