  2. Does anybody know the size of the in-cabin TVs in the Verandah cabins aboard the Koningsdam? And, does anyone know the manufacturer and model number of these TVs? If not, does anyone know if they have auxiliary HDMI ports? Thanks!
  3. We are strongly considering a sunset balcony (5219) on the Koningsdam for an 18-day Hawaii cruise in November 2020. We stayed in a corner suite (5190) on the Oosterdam in 2018 and will have the same cabin on her in June, 2019 for an Alaska trip, so we have some experience with aft cabins. The corner suite was outstanding and I anticipate that the experience will be very different from a balcony but the suite was just too expensive for 18 days. I have some questions and concerns for the Hawaii trip. Thank you all in advance for your responses. 1. The Oosterdam cruise in 2018 was in calm waters in the Caribbean, and I expect Alaska will be fairly smooth as well. I don’t know about Hawaii though especially the 10 days at sea out and back. Might the aft cabin have considerably more movement in crossovers than a mid-ship balcony? 2. Are the aft balcony cabins covered? 3. It appears from the deck plans that the cabins adjacent to the corner suites are maybe slightly larger inside and balcony. Is that just an illusion? 4. I notice that the Koningsdam is not showing as many port side cabins available as starboard. Is that maybe because they haven’t released them yet or port cabins are much more popular and sell out first?
  4. I am sailing on the Koningsdam for the first time. I am considering upgrading to a Signature Suite. I love the Signature Suites in the Vista and Signature Class ships. They have lots of room to walk around being close to a square rather than a rectangular shape. I also enjoy the large verandah. Looking at the Koningsdam Signatures, while they have the nice large bathrooms, the room itself looks cramped and the verandah seems to be not as spacious. Can I have the opinions of you who have both tried the Koningsdam and the older ships' Signature Suites.
  5. Does anyone have a beer list for Koningsdam? We are thinking about booking it for Hawaii next year and I can not find one anywhere. For our Alaskan cruise we had Alaskan Amber, which is our favorite, but I doubt they would have that.
  6. Is there an extensive seating area while awaiting check in to begin. Does check in begin prior to the boarding time and how far in advance of boarding time.
  7. Thanks to CC, I have just discovered the ability to reserve cabanas on HAL. I have sent an inquiry to HAL requesting more details as I was unable to find any information about cabanas on their website. Do you need to reserve Cabana space for the entire cruise? Can you just reserve for a day or two? Can you wait until you are on board to reserve the cabanas? Are they worth the expense? We were on Regal Princess two years ago and found out about renting cabanas by accident. The ship was very crowded and it was almost impossible to secure deck space. We were able to rent for just the sea days and it was wonderful to not worry about where we would be sitting. The experience reminded us of when we first started cruising and were assigned deck chairs by the pool attendant.
  8. On our most recent Konigsdam cruise we were in a category VH verandah and noticed a nice little bonus. A motion sensor night light was mounted below the trim of the lower corner cabinet. Anytime someone walked within a few feet of it, a pleasant little night light popped on so you could safely move around the cabin without turning on the lights. We did not have this perk in previous Koningsdam or Nieuw Statendam cabins of similar or higher cabin categories. I am wondering if these are standard now? Has anyone else noticed this?
  9. Koningsdam TV So currently in a Koningsdam Neptune suite with a 50” TV. It does have USB and HDMI connections on the right side of the TV, inset about 6” from the edge, centered from the top to bottom. AND I CAN AND DID CONNECT to them! It is a Samsung TV. In my case I connected an extension cable (HDMI OR USB) to the port. I did bring a universal remote, ran the auto program and bingo, had the “input” to TV options available to me. Connected my laptop—of course will work with any HDMI connected device, changed to HDMI and my computer screen was on the TV.
  10. Hi everyone, Booked on the Koningsdam for an Alaska cruise next year. The other half uses a wheelchair (he can't walk at all). Just wondered if anyone had any tips that would be useful for us to know about in advance. We don't need any assistance as we are pretty self sufficient as a team, but always handy to have some inside knowledge/tips. We have cruised once before on a Def Leppard Cruise that I won a few years back! But other than that we are pretty much new to cruising... This time I am hoping for no storms, that we are able to get off the ship for day trips and that no one dies! Thanks for all your help!
  11. Koningsdam stateroom 7004 or 7003 blank space in deck plan next to these rooms. Any idea what that space might be used for?
  12. Hi, Can you buy a bucket of beer in teh ocean bar or the crown nest or only at the poolbar? Is it possible to buy them during happy hour? I found a price for a bucket of Corona 5 for 22$. Is this still the price? And the second bucket is then 2$ or 5x 2$. tnx :):)
  13. What is meant by the “exclusive spa treatments”? “These ocean-view staterooms offer spa amenities such as yoga mats and exclusive spa treatments from the nearby Greenhouse Spa and Salon.”
  14. According to HAL's FAQ on what to pack, it states that on gala night men "usually" wear sport coats or suits. Does anyone know for certain if suits or sport coats are required for the MDR on gala nights?
  15. I know I have seen this somewhere but I searched and can't find it. Please let me know what you have leaving mid Jan 2020.
  16. Hi all! You helpful Cruise Critic members helped me decide on an Alaska cruise and currently HAL best suit our timing and itinerary. I thought I was ready to book on the Koningsdam then noticed that there was an identical itinerary for Noordam that departs a day later. I understand the Koningsdam is a larger and newer ship, although the larger entry level suite size and cheaper cost are tempting me on the Noordam. I'd really value any opinions on people who have travelled on one or both of these ships and would care to share their thoughts.
  17. First time on board Koningsdam, Nearing end of a long cruise the power went off during the mariners luncheon and emergency power came on. We had some sort of IT problem and for awhile no engines were functional. Finally got one on back up and running and then the others. Spent some time off Messina before entering the straights. Coast guard, tugs escorted us through the straits of Messina and the captain reported everything was checked out in Naples yesterday. It was a good location for this to happen, very near land and Messina. I would hate to be drifting far from shore, The ship is beautiful, other than the promenade and lack of library, not even a Book exchange unless you read German! We had a great cruise other than this incident but I could not believe people talked over the captains announcements when it was clearly so important! Thankfully a couple of former teachers got the crowd quieted down enough to hear. I would be fearful what might happen if things took a turn!
  18. I tried searching but couldn’t find what I wanted. With the narrow promenades on the Koningsdam is the Muster Drill still held there? If not, what and where is it held? DD
  19. Hi There, We are newbies planing on our first Alaska cruise with HAL, We used to cruise with Princess. we are set on a 7 day round trip going the inside passage route with Glacier Bay and are having a hard time making some choices. 1. We plan to go in early - mid May, will it be too early for a "good" Alaska experience (i.e. is the weather too cold/rainy/windy to enjoy the scenery on the balcony/open decks) 2. We have 2 choices of ships: Koningsdam vs Volendam. The price is actually slightly cheaper for a vista suite on Volendam compared to a standard verandah room. Should we go for a bigger vista suite on the older Volendam or enjoy the new Koningsdam but stay in the smaller balcony room? Our main concern would be any dining experience differences as our on-ship activity may be very limited due to my next point. 3. We are debating of whether to take our 1 yr old with us on the cruise since they have a kid sail for free offer, does anyone have any positive/negative experience with infants this young on a cruise like this? looking forward to any thoughts and recommendations. Thanks, CruisingRagdoll
  20. Any information or opinions on Koningsdam front facing cabins would be helpful. Pictures would be nice also.

  22. Not sure which one to pick for our upcoming 10 Southern Carib cruise in Jan 2020. What time are the shows? Early seems too early and Late seems too late. We are two people and anytime dinning is always frustrating getting a table for two and waiting if we go at 6:30. I am leaning to Late but I read that we will miss out on shows if we do late. Please advise. THANKS
  23. We are booked on our first HAL cruise on the Koningsdam for the 1/2/20 sailing. I see that you can pre-purchase a wine package online before boarding, but would like to know if it's better (and maybe cheaper) to wait until we're actually settled into our cabin after boarding. Any advantages/disadvantages for either?
  24. I have seen lots of posts about the Freestyle Coke machines on the Koningsdam but I am a bit confused about getting cola drinks in the main dining room. Do you have to carry your chipped cup to the dining room to have a cola if you have purchased the Unlimited Coca Cola package? That seems a bit awkward! Thanks!
  25. Back in June I was trying to find info on a specific cabin on Koningsdam without much luck. We’re just back and having stayed in this specific cabin I thought I’d share some photos. Its a grade I on deck 6, Mozart deck and is a fabulous position midship and very quiet. Although the lifts are behind the headboard we didn’t hear a thing, in fact it was the quietest cabin we’ve ever had. The layout is different to the standard inside as it has a sofa and is larger. The only available wall for the flat screen TV is behind the sofa but it’s on an arm which pulls out so you can watch TV from the bed. We loved this cabin and would definitely book it again.
