  1. Thank you Rich, Jacqui, Ann, Debbie, and Dixie for the March 2024 hump day report. Three great days to celebrate. I think the quote is sad but true. I visited Moorea twice, Crystal Symphony in 2018 and Crystal Serenity in 2020. One happy day in history and one sad. The meal sounds nice but I won't make it. My alternative is Chilled Bannana Soup, Classic Caesar Salad, Broiled New York Striploin, and Apple Streusel as served on MS Prinsendam March 16, 2019: Roy
  2. Thank you Rich, Jacqui, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann/Laura, Dixie, and Graham for the Sunday reports and sermon. Bon Voyage, @Lady Hudson. I try to eat right but don't always succeed, and will pass on the other two days. I think I need a bit more coffee before I'm anywhere near ready to comprehend the quote. I visited Jakarta just once, in 2014, on Crystal Serenity. I am very thankful for the convenience of paper money. I'll pass on the meal. My alternative is Lido Salad, Chicken and Ranch Fries, and Peach Crisp. as served on MS Prinsendam February 25 2019 in Prinsendam's Lido. I chose the lido that day to be on deck for our sailaway from Rio de Janeiro: Roy
  3. We have been to Moorea five times on Wind Star, Princess and HAL. Most of our pictures are from prehistoric times before digital cameras, but I did find a few. In 2002 on the APEC cruise on Volendam, Moorea was not a port. We took the ferry from Papeete to Moorea, and rented a car. In fact, we've rented cars there every time except 2007. That time we took a taxi to the Intercontinental Hotel to snorkel. The reef comes very close to the shore there, and the colors of the fish and coral are outstanding. These first pictures were taken in 2007 at the hotel. These were from our drive around the island in 2002. We stopped at a park where a tour was watching a feast being prepared. A young man carrying on an ancient craft. Moorea is our second favorite port after Bora Bora. The night in Moorea on Wind Song, dinner was a barbecue on deck complete with a roasted suckling pig. In 1996, on the Wind Song, anytime the pilot was not on one the bridge, passengers could walk into the bridge. One evening, probably in Bora Bora, we did and started talking to the young deck officer. He even took us out on the bridge wing and pointed out the Southern Cross and other constellations. Fast forward to 2016 on the Prinsendam and a talk with Captain Tim Roberts. In 1996 he was a young officer on Wind Song. We all decided it was probably Captain Tim who was the young office we talked with 21 years earlier. It really is a small world. Lenda
  4. Happy to see you cruising and posting again, Kathi. Five years ago, St. Patrick's Day on the Prinsendam I have a picture of us in our greenery! A lot of water under the bridge since then. Have a wonderful cruise.
  5. Thank you Rich, Jacqui, Vanessa, Debbie, DIxie, and Ann. I think of the three days may favorite is probably Everything you think is right is wrong day. I love the Emerson quote but have not been to Trondheim. Three interesting days in history, I think of what I've heard so far my favorites are the first professional baseball game and the beginning of the Daily. I think I'll pass on the meal. My alternative is Mixed Greens Salad with Fresh Pear, Surf and Turf (just turf for me), and Pear Frangipane Tart as served on MS Prinsendam March 15, 2019: Rain is expected off and on today but I got my errands in this morning with just a few sprinkles. We may have a thunderstorm a bit later. Roy
  6. After we left the Cathedral we walked to the Gamle Bybro bridge, called the Old Town Bridge. It's become the symbol of Trondheim and connects the two banks of the river Nidelven. It was first built in 1681. Continuing on We were headed uphill towards the Kristiansten Fortress built in 1685. Very steep climb. On the hill along the curb was a bicycle lift. You put your right food on a triangular shaped metal pad that rises up the hill as you sit on your bike and it does all the work. Here's a pic of someone using it. Anyway we got up to the Fortress and walked around quite a bit there. Lots to see inside. At the bottom of the hill we enjoyed seeing the little shops and restaurants as we headed back to the ship. Back to the lovely Prinsendam I hope you get to Trondheim someday, too.
  7. These are just a few of our pictures walking around town. Both times we walked around town were on Sunday, and the weather was less than ideal. View from Prinsendam across the bay Town Another view from the ship The lighthouse and headland as we sailed toward the next port Lenda
  8. We have been to Lerwick three times, and in 2003, we had to miss it. The Rotterdam was caught in a bad storm between Greenland and Canada for two days, so we had to cut one port. Our first visit was in 2009 on the Tahitian Princess, and we took the tour to Scalloway Castle. In 2017, we were in Lerwick twice on the Prinsendam. The first time we walked around town, which being there on a Sunday, meant most stores were closed. The second time, we rented a car and drove around the island. I'll post pictures of our walk around town in another post. These are from our drive around the island. Sumbergh Head and the lighthouse Jarlshof, the site of the remains of a Viking village To get to the southern tip of the island and Sumbergh Head, you had to drive across the airport runway, so the road was closed when a plane was landing or taking off. Scenery along the road heading back to Lerwick and the part of the island north of town. A couple of interior pictures of Scalloway Castle Scenes from the northern part of the island Lenda
  9. Good morning from a cloudy and windy, 13 mph, Quartzsite. It is 54F and we'll reach a high of 63F this afternoon. At least, I shouldn't get too hot finishing the weeding this afternoon. Thankfully, it will stay cloudy because I won't be able to wear my sun hat or I'd be spending most of the time chasing it. It looks like it will remain cloudy through Saturday, with a chance of rain tomorrow and Saturday. I'm not holding my breath for rain since many times the rain reaches the Colorado River and then goes either north or south of us. I guess I'll have to wait until next week when the wind is predicted to be lower to spray the ground clear. HAPPY PI DAY! No pie today. With a second birthday cake to finish, we'll have to wait on having pie. I'll celebrate scientists and geniuses today. I ask questions when I don't understand something, and learned early that teachers should not tell fifth graders they ask too many questions. The quote of the day sounds like Joan Rivers. The meal sounds good, and I think I'd try the first recipe Debbie @dfish found for us. We'll pass on the drink, and I'd like to try the wine. We have been to Lerwick several times, once on Tahitian Princess and the rest on Prinsendam. Three interesting days in history. @grapau27 Graham, thank you for the explanation of the days. @StLouisCruisers Sandi, please wish your DB a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY for us. When I had my two shingles shots last year, my arm was sore, red and warm to the touch for a few days. I've been told such reactions mean your body is building up immunity. @cat shepard Ann, I hope your DS is comfortable in Encompass. @Denise T Denise, I'm glad Fiona is feeling better. I hope Chase recovers quickly from his toe amputation, and that the biopsy comes back clear. @smitty34877 Terry, it is interesting watching a scene being filmed, and it's amazing how many takes the do before the director is satisfied. @dfish Debbie, it's nice that Senior Services will install safety features for seniors for free. There are some advantages of being a senior even when we don't feel like one. @aliaschief Bruce, the menu for the dinner with the Captain looks wonderful. Great picture of you. @marshhawk Annie, I'm sorry yesterday was not a good day for either of you. Can you cancel the order for the checks? if not, I think you could just shred one batch, but check with the bank. I hope you get the phone bill worked out. @Haljo1935 Elizabeth, I hope your headache clears up soon. I hope the EMG goes well, and that the rain isn't too hard when you have to be driving. @ger_77 Gerry, I hope your DH's blood test shows the dye is out of his system. @richwmn Rich, I was happy when I read your post on yesterday's Daily that the ship was cleared for Bora Bora. @Mr. Boston Please wish your DM a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY for us. Lenda
  10. Good morning from a sunny Quartzsite. It was 49F when I got up at 7 am and it is now 54F. We are headed to a high of 75F this afternoon with less wind than yesterday. When I finish here, DH is taking me out for a drive-thru breakfast. Equal pay sounds like a no brainer, but we still have a ways to go before women receive equal pay for the same work. I was a Girl Scout as were the DDs. All I'll say is my side of the home office here and in Texas is pretty organized, and DH has worked on his side so it's better. 😁 An interesting quote from Vladimir Nabokov, but like Roy @rafinmd I want to wait a long time to find out if the second part is true. The meal sounds interesting, but we'll pass on that and the drink. The wine sounds like a good one. We have been to Edinburgh several times, but since we were on Prinsendam, we always docked in Rosyth. I guess we were near Newhaven when we toured the Britannia. I'll celebrate the three days in history. @kazu Jacqui, I loved the Request From the Rainbow Bridge even though it brought tears to my eyes. @MISTER 67 Wow on your DS and DDIL's flight delays. I'm glad the finally made it home safely. @Haljo1935 Elizabeth, I hope all goes well with the meeting, and that those who think it's a raise and/or a promotion are correct. I hope the new exercise helps the should and that the pain goes away soon. @aliaschief Thanks for the great pictures of all the different tribes, Bruce. @smitty34877 Terry, I love the picture of Miss Camilla cooking with her dad. She is still our little cutie, but not so little anymore. Her dad is brave to put on the matching apron, much less share a picture of him wearing it. @marshhawk Annie, your post last night was not inappropriate, and there are times we just have to get things out. I'm sorry Chuck's surgery did not fix the problem, and that now he is in pain on top of the the fuzziness. I'm also concerned about his weight loss. @ottahand7 Nancy, the southwest birthday card was beautiful. @grapau27 Graham, I'm so very sorry that Pauline's sister chose not to reconcile with the family. It's her loss, but I know it affected both of you deeply. @cat shepard Ann, I hope your DS will be moved to Encompass soon. Yesterday, DH expressed the same hope to me, and he has first hand knowledge of the good work and great care the provide. Lenda
  11. Old Prinsendam arriving in Edinburgh, Scotland: Port of Newhaven:
  12. Thank you Rich, Jacqui, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann, and Dixie. Happy Birthday Mitzi and Lenda. Condolences to @Nickelpenny. Wishing Terri good results at the Mayo Clinic. Equal Pay Day should get earlier each year. A salute to the Girl Scouts. I probably should organize what I use as sort of a home office but will probably just decide to call it something else. I like the quote but am willing to wait to find out if it is true. I'll celebrate all 3 of the days in history but especially the one in 1994. Been to Edinburgh a few times but I don't think ever docked in Newhaven. Today's meal is a solid miss for me. My alternative is Pineapple, Kiwi, Strawberry Passion Fruit Cup, Chilled Wild Berry Blend Soup, Broiled New York Strip Loin Steak, and Carrot Cake with Lemon Curd as served on MS Prinsendam March 10, 2019: A chilly start today but the start of a warmer week. Roy
  13. It was a beautiful day on Oct. 28, 2014 when the Prinsendam arrived in Marmaris, Turkey. We had just been to Ashdod, Israel two days earlier and spent a long day touring Jerusalem so a nice day spent strolling through this port was just what we needed. Besides, we all wanted Wi-Fi!! Here we are approaching the dock at a marina filled with sailboats. One of the first things we saw near the marina was this sign with Visa costs. Interesting how much some places were charged. I think it must be a reciprocal thing. If you charge citizens a certain amount they will charge your citizens that same amount. Nothing said about China or Russia there. The town was very clean and we noticed in addition to sailboats there were lots of yachts to admire. Along the waterfront were a lot of statues, too. There was a small castle on a hill which we walked up to but no one wanted to pay an admission fee to go inside so we just took a quick glance in the doorway and left. I have no idea why I am sitting here unless it was just a short rest. The sign translates to read "Seafarers' Culture House". This looks like a nice place to spend some time shopping. Along the waterfront were many cafes to stop and have a refreshment. So on our walk back we stopped at one and sat on a cozy seating area to have a cold drink. I don't drink beer so I'm not sure what I had to drink that day. Right across from our table and sofa was this yacht with a place to hide the "toys" inside. We found out it was Race week there and I suppose that's why there were so many boats in the harbor. Maybe it always looks that way. Who knows? As the Prinsendam left that afternoon, you can see from this photo the top of the castle we walked over to earlier. It was a nice day in Marmaris. Hope you get to enjoy it someday, too.
  14. Our very first HAL was a 9 night Transatlantic on the Prinsendam, in May 2007. We were young(ish), still working, and could only afford an inside guarantee. But we wanted to try HAL, and this opportunity was too good to pass up. After embarkation, we went to the dining room to get a feel for our assigned table. We had the good fortune to meet the DR manager (Sander Vogtlander) who dedicated himself to orienting these two newbies to the HAL experience. We were very very well looked after, and were even invited to the Captain's Table on the first formal night. I was quite glad that I had packed a tux. I'm sorry that I don't recall the captain's name, but he was a kind and handsome man (British if I recall correctly) who I am sure that many of you remember fondly. We were onboard with many seasoned HAL veterans, but consider ourselves most fortunate to have been welcomed to our first HAL ship with such enthusiasm. And of couse the Prinsendam, aged as she was, made us feel lucky to be on a ship, and not a floating hotel. We loved it all, and are looking forward to joining the Nieuw Statendam this summer. But we will always miss the Prinsendam. 😎
  15. Thank you Rich, Jacqui, Vanessa, Debbie, Ann, and Dixie, wishing healing for Jacqui, Happy Birthday to Sue, and a wonderful house warming for Morgan. Strange but when I googled 311 it came up with a music group but I knew what it should have been and Graham nailed it. We have it in at leas most of Maryland, and it is a godsend for our 911 operators. While we are tired of Covid it is not tired of us. Every day should be debunking day. Two sad days in history. I had a few more days on QM2 before Cunard decided the World Cruise could not go on. People who declared they could not fly were permitted to stay on board to Southampton operating as a "commercial ship" with bare minimal services but most of us were put up in hotels until they could arrange flights for us. I have sailed to/from San Pedro on Crystal several times and once from Long Beach on Carnival Inspiration. The cruise terminal there is the original hanger for the "Spruce Goose". The meal looks interesting. My alternative is Grandma's Chicken Noodle Soup, Veal Parmigiana, and Ricotta Raspberry Tart as served on MS Prinsendam March 11, 2019: A chilly and very windy day here. Roy
  16. We have been a number of times to Lisbon and a couple of times on the” Elegant Explorer " , The beloved Prinsendam in 2016 and 2019 . Thank you all for the very nice pictures I saw a lot of familiar shots from places we have visited in Lisboa . In 2016 we were on a small group tour from Lisbon to Sintra and Estoril so I will show a few pictures from that particular day , will see how many pics CC will allow me . We first went to the Palace of Pena built in the 1850’s on the site where a medieval monastery had stood . It lies on higher grounds plus there still was some morning fog which is seen here on my photos . Despite being very late today I love to show you some pictures of one of our visits to Lisbon Talk about workmanship ....... Coffee break in town and some of Portugal's best Cascais The man I was named after , my Patron Saint , Saint Anthony Time to go back to Lisbon and after a visit to the Cathedral to go back Home to the Prinsendam Back on board was not until 8 pm so we had time to shoot some nice pictures in a beautiful light from the sun going down slowly . Have a great day everybody . Take Care and Stay Safe ! Thank you to all the contributors who are keeping this thread going Tony 😅
  17. Alexandria, Egypt DH and I were in Alexandria, Egypt in October 2014 on our first Holland America cruise. We were on the Prinsendam so what a wonderful introduction. The people of Egypt were very happy to see cruise tourists back since they were just getting past some bad times in their country. We took a ship's tour to Cairo and Giza where we visited an Antiquities museum. Then on to Giza to see the fabulous pyramids. The bus had a big, burly armed guard on board with us and the bus was escorted through the city of Alexandria by trucks loaded with armed security men. The armed guard The city of Alexandria itself was rough looking, but made for some fascinating viewing along the way. Along the way were some interesting pigeon towers (or pigeon condos). Arriving in city of Cairo Fascinating way to carry cattle. They must be dairy cows and used to being handled. A beef cow would jump out of there. There were no photos allowed in the museum and my IPhone was only months old at the time so I didn't take a lot of photos with it then. Just this photo of the outside. So I have nothing to share from inside the Antiquities museum but it was unique and fascinating. If you ever go to Cairo, you should make it a point to visit there. After lunch we had lunch at the Le Meridien Hotel, then headed to the pyramids of Giza. Waiting for paying riders The city streets are just past the pyramids. Which makes some individuals ask why they would put the pyramids right here in the middle of the city? Hilarious right? Then we went to the Sphinx which had some work being done to it. We headed from there to a fancy gift shop for souvenirs, where guards were on duty to protect tourists getting on and off the buses. Photo taken from inside bus. This photo was taken from the street where the gift shop was. Yes, they are right there!
  18. Lenda's photos post #5 In 2016, when the Prinsendam stopped in Lisbon, we had a easy, relaxing day. We took the Metro into the main area and and walked around. These pictures are a combination from our walk and from the sail away, with some of the best weather we've had in Lisbon. The walkway from the Santa Justa Lift to the upper level of town. I'm glad we took the elevator in either 2002 or 2004 before the lines got so extremely long. Pictures from the ship and as we sailed back down the Tagus River. Lenda Lenda's photos post #6 In 2017, the Prinsendam took us to Lisbon twice. The first time was on the way from northern Europe to the Mediterranean, and the last time was on the TA back to Fort Lauderdale. On our first visit, we took the train to Cascais, so here a few more pictures. I had forgotten our arrival for our second visit that year was later than normal, giving us a great sail in. The last two times we have been in Lisbon (2017 and 2019), we have tried to visit the MAAT (Electricity Museum). In 2017, we were there on a Tuesday and the museum was closed. In 2019, we were there on a Monday, but they had changed to day it was closed to Monday. Someday. 🤞 It's an off beat museum, but my father worked for the electric utility company, and DH worked for a sister company for five years, so it will be interesting to us. Once on shore, we took both loops of the Ho-Ho. These are from the first loop. The bull ring, but the bulls get to live! An unusual place for tiles Jerónimos Monastery The second Ho-Ho loop took us to the Park of Nations, a revitalized industrial area, where the 1998 Expo was held. Lenda
  19. First of Lenda's photos. I'll try to merge some of the posts together if they aren't too long. These are a few we took on our first visit in 2001 on Golden Princess' inaugural TA. We docked at the cruise terminal that was away from downtown. Pictures from our tour and our walk around downtown after our tour. And the elevator, Santa Justa Lift, from the lower streets to the upper part of town I'll check the pictures from our many visits to see if I find others that are not duplicates. Post #2 These next pictures are from our Noordam 2002 and 2004 TAs and from our b2b 2008 cruise on Prinsendam. Lisbon from our 2002 Ho-Ho tour. The same day, we took the train from Rosario Station to Sintra. Since we were on foot in Sintra, we walked around the area by the train station and did not attempt to climb up to the palace. Our second time in Lisbon on our 2004 Noordam b2b2b2b cruise we took the train to Cascais and Estoril. We were back in Lisbon in 2008 on the Prinsendam. These are from our Ho-Ho tour. Lenda
  20. My photos from Lisbon. In 2018 we went to Lisbon in both April and September on Prinsendam. We just couldn't resist the great itineraries on that little ship! Here is an early morning photo as the ship arrived. The sun was just rising. An interesting way to get around Lisbon, these trams. Aren't they cool? Some of the beautiful flowers for sale at one of the squares. The arch at Rossio Square We stopped at this wine tasting shop in Rossio Square Automatic dispensers You purchase an electronic card and use it to try wines from these dispensers. DH trying a red Cheers!🍷 And from 2019. The tile work in Portugal is known all over the world. You see it everywhere on the streets and inside the buildings. When wandering around Lisbon you will find interesting wall murals like this one, which takes your eye away from the potholes, patched or not.😉 While visiting a small park I spied this van parked in front of the fire station garage door. They had to hunt the driver down to move it so they could go out on a call. Hope it wasn't urgent! We went to the top of a hill (lots of those in Lisbon) and saw these beautiful views. This batch of photos was taken on our April-May 2019 final cruise on Prinsendam.
  21. Thank you Rich, Jacqui, Vanessa, Debbie, Dixie, and Ann. Condolences to @grapau27, Sarah, and family. Three interesting days to celebrate. When I think of fanny pack I tend to think in terms of ski patrol. The quote is interesting but I cannot really relate to it. Three diverse days in history. I'll celebrate the first and last more than the middle one. I was due to visit Reunion in March 2020 on Queen Mary 2 but you can probably guess how that turned out. The meal sounds interesting but not something I would find at the top of my list. My alternative is Classic Caesar Salad, Yankee Pot Roast, and Cherry Strudel as served on MS Prinsendam March 9, 2019. I don't think our weather is as wet as predicted but still glad I got all my errands run before 10 this morning and don't need to go outside again. Right now the rain sounds pretty significant on the bay window. Roy
  22. LOL. But I was posting about before there was any BB King (a favorite place of mine. And, of course, the Prinsendam had fewer venues than the other vessels.
  23. I guess I was lucky that you and I were never on the same cruises 😂. the Crow’s Nest (piano bar) was always packed on the Prinsendam and still pretty much packed when we shut it down. Same thing on the old Rotterdam at the Mix. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing both Barry from Boston and Stryker a few times. Always great!
  24. The problem is that HAL never really had "Dueling Pianos." Rather they simply had two pianos (with players) who worked together. The format is somewhat different (those who have been to real dueling piano venues would understand). Like any entertainment, it call comes down to the specific entertainers. If you got two good piano player/singers who worked well together, it could be a treat. If they were not so good it could almost be painful. One big difference we noted was in working hours. The duel pianos we had on HAL would play 2 or 3 sets with a nice break between each set. Piano Bar players may also do sets, but some are truly their own person. DW reminded me of one night on the VOV when "Barry from Boston" (Barry Rocklin) placed from about 9 until nearly midnight without a break! Why? There was a fun crowd at the piano, I think Barry was enjoying the entire scene, so he just kept playing and singing. I also recall one night on the Prinsendam when "Stryker" never took a break. The thing about our cruises with piano bar players on HAL is we usually find there are fewer then 10 people awake after 10pm. In fact, Barry from Boston would sometimes have fun playing the Sesame Street counting song for the number at the bar such as "4." Always great for a laugh (at least for the 4 of us awake). Hank
  25. That was my experience as well. I was told I did have to report any discrepancy on my account before the start of the next segment as that part to my account was closed but the account carried on as one statement and I could look all the way back to when I had boarded the ship just as you are reporting. This was on the Koningsdam and previously the Prinsendam.
