  1. Getting a head start on the trip report. Our cruise planning report can be found at... DW and I are retired and have only cruised a few times in the Caribbean and this is DWs 1st time in Alaska. We're doing a DIY 8 day pre-cruise prior to ship boarding in Seward.

  5. Day 9: Friday May 24 - Boarding Day Radiance of the Seas - Walkabout We decided after getting settled in to have a walk around the ship. It is larger than the Liberty of the Seas but still small enough to get around easily. Our walkabout lasted several hours until dinner time. Exterior was similar in many respects to the Liberty of the Seas which we had sailed on a few times in the Caribbean. The interior except for room configuration is very different. The Centrum and gift shops are laid out very differently. The biggest issue I had with the Centrum is that all the smoke from the Casino can easily slip into the level 4 where the dance floor and band are. Our 1st dinner was not that special in that the tea was very weak and the rolls were cold and hard. I expected more. Another twist was that on entering our room after dinner, there were tickets for the excursion we had planned in Juneau for a 3:30 "5 Glacier" Flight Seeing tour over the Juneau Ice Field. I was really looking forward to it but DW was really having 2nd thoughts due to all the recent news about Alaska private plane crashes over the last two weeks. The tickets were for a 10:15 flight! How could they do this. I marched down to the Central Command Center on deck 5 and after much confrontation cancelled them. We had a 10am whale watch scheduled with Harv & Marv's, so no way could we keep a 10:15 flight. Terrifying to me but DW was happy. As it was, we had done the Denali glacier fly around w/glacier landing and had a flight scheduled with Island Wings w/lake landing in Ketchikan. DW used to be a white-knuckled flyer but since being cured of stage 4 Melanoma, she is a cool cookie in the air. Hey, maybe I could get her on the zip-line!!
  6. Hello Everyone! We’re off on another adventure! Thank you to those have followed along with us the last few reviews! This time, we’re trying out Harmony of the Seas, our first time on an Oasis Class ship! We’ve previously sailed on Vision/Radiance/Voyager/Freedom Class ships, plus Majesty, and are excited to try out the big one. A little bit about us: We’re both career educators, me a middle school band director, a saint, I know, and him a high school administrator, both in Hillsborough County. We love our jobs, but every chance we have to get away we take. While I have the summer off, he works 12 months, so this is our only opportunity to sneak off this summer. We’ve only been cruising regularly for a little over 2.5 years, but fell in love with it almost immediately. This is our first cruise with just the 2 of us since June 2017, and that may just be the most exciting part. Don’t get me wrong, we love our cruising friends, but it’s nice to get away just us too. Living in Florida has its perks...there are 4 ports between 20 minutes and 4.5 hours away. Cruising is very easy. Being an educator in Florida who likes to cruise, however, has its downfalls. Very rarely do I get to cruise without someone from my school on the ship. This cruise is no exception. The PTSA President and her family will be on board, and staying on the same deck. Joy! The cruise: We are doing a 7 night Eastern Caribbean cruise. The itinerary is below. We will be staying in a Boardwalk View Balcony. I’m excited to try one out. As I said before, this is our first time on an Oasis Class ship, so the neighborhood concept is new to us. We’ll see if we like it. We have the second to last room aft, so maybe a sliver of ocean and the aqua theater viewable, depending on how much Perfect Abyss blocks. Itinerary: Day 1 - Sailaway Day 2 - Perfect Day at CocoCay Day 3 - At Sea Day 4 - St. Thomas Day 5 - St. Maarten Day 6 - At Sea Day 7 - At Sea Day 8 - Back to Reality I chose this sailing for 2 reason. First, the ship. We wanted to try it, and I wanted the food choices. Second, the itinerary. We’re visiting CocoCay for the first time since renovations, and St. Thomas and St. Maarten are two of our favorites. We’ll go anytime we can. Maho Beach especially. It was #1 on my checker list from the time I was 15 until I got to check it off. For this sailing, I booked us the Ultimate Dining Package. Over the course of the year since, RC eliminates the Ultimate and rolled out the Unlimited. I’m beyond excited to eat my way through this cruise, not that I don’t every cruise, but with so many dining options to try, the foodie in me is ready for new things. With UDP comes a lot of reservations to keep track of. Throw in the show reservations, plus excursions and it easily becomes overwhelming...at least for me it did. I teach middle school. Everything is planned out because it has to be. Chaos and 12 year olds holding thousands of dollars worth of equipment don’t mix well. So, while for some it’s overkill, for me, having an itinerary works well. It keeps us on track, and gives me a visual. Will we follow it 100%? Absolutely not. But at least I have an idea of what a day holds. We all work differently. Of course, I’m extra, so it’s color coded. Sidebar...I posted it to another website, and it’s amazing how many people there with so much free time that they stop by to let you know you’re planning your vacation wrong. Well...that’s a start. Plenty more to come. If you want more content, feel free to follow us on FB and Instagram. Our page/profile on both is queensonthehighseas Thanks for following along!
  7. Day 9: Friday May 24 - Boarding Day Radiance of the Seas Planning for boarding day might have been better but things did go well. Had a nice early breakfast at Seward Windsong Lodge, got on the road early but no stops. Spotted a Moose on the loose along Seward Highway. Counted about 50 mature Bald Eagles in the mud flats of Turnagain Arm feeding on small fish trapped by the receding tide. And dropped DW with luggage at departure gate of Ted Stephens Airport. Had plenty of time to gas up rent car (found cheap nearby) and drop car. Things went amazingly smoothly. Rental facility right across street from departure & arrival zone. DW and I waited ~45 min for the 11am A.C.T. Big Bus. All went smooth and it was an easy ride to the Seward Cruise Terminal. There is a multitude of ways to plan the sail-away day and everyone is advised to look at all the options. Ours was nowhere near perfect but it went without a hitch. When there, the bus allowed the luggage to be unloaded and loaded into the cruise ship transfer. It went simple and quick. I stood and watched others come in on the Alaska Railroad. Check-in was simple and fast since we had a suite. We immediately had a bite at the Windjammer after getting onboard and were in our room by 2:15. That’s the Grand Suite tour. It comes with a lot of perks that we only really discovered on the last two days cruising. Mostly we were just interested in having a king bed and a big balcony. Next cruise I will opt for a smaller balcony. Here is a point I want some folks to know – starboard or port. We were in 1556 – level 10 starboard side. If the trip is southbound, I would recommend port side. Just a better view even in ports docked. So just for grins and giggles, I checked late August next year and only found one balcony available on the port side southbound cruise. There was also a $600 ding over the starboard side which had several remaining rooms left. There were some in early August on the port side and also aft balconies at a big premium. Interesting:=\

  9. no not Mariner, that was only 3/4 night cruises. I can't remember if it was on my February Liberty cruise or if I saw it on our Vision Panama Canal cruise last November. And if it was one of my cruises before that, then I'm guilty of my own pet peeve of not posting a current experience. But I will inquire when on Radiance this August.
  10. Favorite spot on a Radiance Class is the back of the WJ for lunch. Been on the Radiance 4 times, Brilliance & Serenade once. Largest ship I have sailed on was the Liberty twice and soon to be Freedom next March. Radiance Class offers you great views from inside of the ocean while the Freedom Class doesn't, but love both classes.

  12. We love the Oasis and Quantum class ships, but are also big fans of Radiance class - the outside dining area at the back of the Windjammer, both DL and CL are great (with outside seating areas), there's enough to do and enough nice spaces to spend time in and out and they have a few choices of Speciality Restaurants (plus the best venue in the fleet for Chef's Table). Obviously those things wouldn't appeal to everyone but would make us continue to book Radiance class if the itinerary is right - we have 3 coming up this year on Jewel and Serenade. However......if this is your first trip to Europe I would choose the cruise based on the itinerary and what exactly you want to see and do because if the ship experience is second to experiencing Europe it won't matter which ship you're on. Some of the very best cruises we have done have been the 12 night cruises from Barcelona which used to be done on Radiance class and are now on Vision. You take in a number of countries - and the West Med one includes an overnight in Venice - and really get to see a lot of what a Med cruise has to offer. I would take a look at those for the best experience, although be aware that the West Med one will involve a lot of travelling and can be very full-on if you intend to visit Rome and Florence.
  13. We just got back this weekend from doing the 7 day Southbound on the Radiance of the Seas. We added the 3 day land portion on before this. I am going to post the cruise compass' first and then will type a review on the cruise. I will then add a review of the land portion. Feel free to ask any questions. I will try to answer then to the best that I can. 14. 100% agree with this. Our Kruse guide was a great asset on our self-drive tour done pre-cruise for our Radiance cruise back in January. We drove a total of 12 nights on Nth & Sth Islands, which included Wellington to Auckland. One place to visit on the drive from Auckland to Wellington is Mt Ruapehu, & the surrounding National Park ( we stayed 2 nights there). Also Lake Taupo and Waitomo are must sees.
  15. We have only cruised on Voyageur, Freedom, Quantum and Oasis class ships mainly because our kids have enjoyed the activities on those larger ships. We are planning an adults only trip on a European cruise. While I see that Oasis class ships sometimes sail these routes, I am looking into some of the Radiance and Vision class ships. for those who have sailed both larger and smaller ships, I would appreciat your opinions regarding: what did you miss the most (about the larger ships) when on the smaller ones? what did you appreciate the most about the smaller ships, having done both? For context, my wife and I tend not to stay up late, and we do not prioritize the shows. We anticipate doing excursions or tours at each European port. We really enjoy the areas on the larger class ships (like the promenade or Central Park) to sit, have a snack when we want, and have a coffee or a drink at night.
  16. Radiance - smallish loved the view to the ocean from almost everywhere not too many 2,500 pax CL - good size never full sailing ex Sydney DL - too small was very busy ex Sydney Ovation - big (Oasis = HUGE) big ship 4200 pax plenty of stuff to do love the CK CL - just awesome full width aft - perfect views of wake handles rough seas really well Going on Voyager early 2020 & cant wait Craig
  17. I think CLs on Radiance class may have been the only ones that took over a fully functioning lounge, with bar. We like sitting around that bar.
  18. The last two ships I was on - the Ecstasy and Magic - it seems Your Time Dining opened at 5:15 on Formal Night and 5:30 the other nights. But, it definitely is 5:15 - 9:15 all nights on the Sunshine now. We used the app to sign up for our table. You can't click to reserve your table until they are open. Formal night, I signed up at 5:30; but had checked about 5:20 (to see how long the wait time was) and could have reserved a table at that time. If you have sailed out of Charleston before, you know how small the terminal at the ship is. It worked for the Fantasy and Ecstasy. The Sunshine had left from Charleston previously the years it made it's way up and back for the summer in New York; so I guess they had enough experience to know they needed more space if it was going to be every cruise for however long until the "dancing of the ships" occurs again. Though anything in the Conquest class or Sunshine class (with new Sunrise and soon to be Radiance) are the largest ships that can port in Charleston and all have a similar passenger load. Unless they have a lot of trouble filling the Sunshine; I don't see Charleston going back to a Fantasy class ship. (Though there are many things we love about that class.) Have fun on your Bermuda cruise!
  19. Radiance has a Park Cafe in the adult pool area but it is not nearly as big and does not offer as much as the Park Cafe on Oasis Class ships.
  20. We were on the Sunshine in early Dec of last year. We didn't notice massive crowds everywhere - yeah, there was usually a line up for the Comedy club for the second and subsequent showings, so that might get annoying if you are a die hard comedy fan and can't make the first show. We liked the variety of "exposure to the Lido" areas in the Serenity area. If you wanted, you can sit looking aft and people watch all the shenanigans of the Lido pool. And it was easy enough (for us, at least) to grab a spot further forward, away from the Lido music - maybe not a pod all the time, but more often than not. Maybe we just got lucky? The third level was never closed for us due to winds, but again, maybe luck? (One of the areas near the bar was partly closed while they did some painting or something, maybe on a port day - can't remember specifically, it obviously didn't bother me enough to sink in.) Anyway, we'll be on Radiance next December, so we will use these Sunrise reviews as guidance, if not gospel.
  21. I don't like large crowds any more than it sounds like you do. But as I've said previously, I think a crowded feel on the Sunrise has more to do with the addition of all the new cabins, not the handful of cabins that have 5 people in them. That ship, the Sunshine, and upcoming Radiance, are from a different era of cruising. Older & smaller. They weren't originally designed to hold as many as they do now with all the new cabins added. I couldn't care less if 5 adults want to squeeze into a cabin. What I don't like is this concept of sacrificing open spaces and popular public areas just to add more cabins. Such as making the theater & comedy clubs smaller. More people + smaller main venues = the long lines to get into the theater & comedy shows that I've read so much about (or having to show up a half hour early just to get a decent seat). With as much money as CCL makes every year, and Carnival Corp. as a whole, I wished they wouldn't worry so much about stuffing in more cabins for more revenue.
  22. Adventure OTS - Clo O'Connor July 6 for 2 months. Then who? Allure OTS - Jimmy Rhodes March 11 for 4 months, then Mitch Merucciis scheduled to return August 12 for 2 months. Anthem OTS - Dennis Charles May 12 until September 6, then Chris Brown starts September 6 for 4 months. Brilliance OTS - Mike Szwajkowski July 3 (for 2 or 4 months?) 23. so now that Cuddy has been reassigned, any idea who will be CD on Radiance in mid-August for our Alaska cruise? Thanks for any info.
  24. Just back from a double emerald river cruise. Radiance then Liberte- happy for any questions. Loved the ships/ itineraries and staff
  25. Wondering if Serenade has anything different than the other Radiance class ship that makes it your favorite of that class. We have sailed on Jewel, Radiance and Brilliance before and have Serenade booked for October. It is not our favorite class of ship, we prefer the larger ships, but it is doing Bermuda from Boston, so well worth the convenience for us.
