  1. We are going to be arriving in Seward, Alaska on the Radiance on 6/21 and I'm looking at ground transportation options. The earliest, and most reasonably priced that I've found leaves the port in Seward for the Anchorage Airport at 8:00 a.m. Their website says they do this every day and that we will have no problem getting off the ship and to their bus by 8:00, but that makes me a little nervous, especially since they don't appear to have a later bus. The company is Alaska Cruise Transportation. Can anyone familiar with the debarkation process in Seward advise if it is reasonable to arrange ground transport for 8:00? Thanks in advance!
  2. I do a mock booking a few days a week. We booked in January 2019 for a June 2020 cruise to Alaska on Radiance. 3ppl (2 adults-1child) OV= $3,000 (with insurance-$137) The price has NEVER gone down once. Our travel agent said it's a good thing you booked early. We got a good price. It's up $750-800 on average weekly. Balcony....sheesh but I am thankful for an OV. Bucket list cruise! I know it's the whole supply and demand but I hate to think what the cost will be late summer for this cruise and even further on down the line.
  3. Hey everyone... it's been a while! But I'm back, and ready for another review. I have been waiting for this sailing with anticipation more so than any other sailing since Quantum's first ever Caribbean sailing Dec 1, 2014. In fact, I had Anthem booked 3 years ago and had to move my deposit over to another ship as the timing did not work for me, and never re-booked Anthem. I've been yearning to get on another Quantum Class sailing as I really loved Quantum. I shared my Quantum review above with my roll call as many cruisers on this sailing have never been on a Q Class ship. That first photo is epic! Hardly anyone has been on the front bow area of the ship since Quantum, not even on Anthem. And now with the All Access Tour scaled down in half, it's no longer offered. If you've never been on Q CLass and would like a trip down memory lane, have a look at Quantum above. Back to Ovation and Alaska... I've been party to many "Q Class in Alaska" threads over the last 5 years here in CC. I was a HUGE fan since day one that a Q Class ship would be a great hit and best seller for Alaskan itineraries. I just couldn't believe it when they sent a totally inner focused ship with a fully exposed top deck (in Alaskan weather) the Explorer to the Pacific Northwest. Totally stupid in my opinion. But alas, 5 years in the making and Ovation is finally here... in my own home town no less! Vancouver is beautiful and consistently voted in the top 20 cities to visit and/or live in in the world. Those cruisers who are too lazy to hang around a day pre or post cruise are doing themselves an injustice. Above you see the downtown core of Vancouver, with Canada Place Pier in the lower right (the "Sails"). To get their, Ovation has to transit under the Lion's Gate Bridge through a small pass in the upper right before reaching open ocean. The bridge is 198 feet mid span... Q Class is 198 feet tall on a good day. Uhm.... ok.... so there's an issue here. Above is the 178 foot tall Radiance going under the bridge with only 20 feet clearance. So how will Ovation get under?? Well, the current Transpacific from Hawaii will be arriving early to Vancouver the night before debarkation at 8pm in order to get the lowest tide level possible. Not only that, I suspect we'll witness the rare event of the funnels being retracted. And even with all that, there's supposedly about a 5 foot clearance of the Lion's Gate Bridge. I've also been involved in many Panama Canal threads regarding size of ships, and which ships may or may not pass under the Bridge of Americas on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal... this sailing re-enforces the best answers given by BillH48 and ChengP on those threads, that likely only perfect conditions would allow for a Q Class ship to get under the BoA as it is a sister bridge with same span height as the Lion's Gate. We are currently experiencing summer weather this week in Vancouver. Today it was 25 degree Celcius/about 75 degrees F. On Sunday and Monday it cools a bit to 65F/18C... still great weather for a beautiful sail-in and sail-away from the port of Vancouver. If anyone is around Stanley Park on Monday night, they should definitely get to a view point somewhere to watch the ship leave. According to slack tide charts found by AlanF on our role call (Thx Alan!) we are estimating Ovation to leave Canada Place around 6:45-7 and get to the bridge somewhere between 7:10-7:30 to hit that low tide. So why this itinerary? It's one of a kind and is not being repeated. 4 port stops, 2 glacier viewings, and basically (for me anyways) a round trip Vancouver-to-Seattle sailing which is a simple bus trip back up from Seattle when the cruise is finished. The itinerary is outstanding with a ton of extended time at the ports. Date Port Arrive Depart Monday, May 13 Vancouver, BC, Canada 5:00pm Tuesday, May 14 At Sea Wednesday, May 15 At Sea Thursday, May 16 Icy Strait Point, AK 9:00am 8:00pm Friday, May 17 Sitka, AK 7:00am 6:00pm Saturday, May 18 Hubbard Glacier, AK (Cruising) Sunday, May 19 Juneau, AK 7:00am 9:00pm Monday, May 20 Skagway, AK 7:00am 8:30pm Tuesday, May 21 Endicott Arm, AK (Cruising) Wednesday, May 22 At Sea Thursday, May 23 At Sea Friday, May 24 Seattle, WA 6:00am I'll have VOOM on this cruise, so we'll see the O3b satellite network works for Alaska, especially for all the negative internet reviews on radiance the last few years. I have a few more posts to add before cruise day on Monday. This is going to be an AWESOME cruise! 😁
  4. I just checked the Carnival website for our May 30, 2020 cruise and it will not come up. We still had some family wanting to book. Do you think it could be sold out so soon.
  5. We booked a cruise for next spring on Carnival Radiance. The ports being Barcelona, Livorno Italy, Civitavecchia Italy, Naples, Palermo, Kotor Montenegro, Corfu Greece, Catania Italy, and Vallette Malta. When i booked there were no available PORT aft balcony rooms, only starboard. (Pretty sure at this point Carnival does not open up all rooms at the same time!) So now some port side rooms have opened up. With a moderate increase in price. Which is the side we prefer. Question, anyone familiar with these ports, should i switch to port side room or does it not make much difference in the majority of these ports? I am aware port does not necessarily mean port when docked. And that some might even be tenders. Thanks!
  6. TYI! We are going on the Radiance of the Seas in 25 days, we have MTD and do you have to make advance reservations for dinner each night?
  7. We are going to be arriving in Seward, Alaska on the Radiance on 6/21 and I'm looking at ground transportation options. The earliest, and most reasonably priced that I've found leaves the port in Seward for the Anchorage Airport at 8:00 a.m. Their website says they do this every day and that we will have no problem getting off the ship and to their bus by 8:00, but that makes me a little nervous, especially since they don't appear to have a later bus and on our last cruise it took FOREVER to get off the ship. The company is Alaska Cruise Transportation. Can anyone familiar with the debarkation process in Seward advise if it is reasonable to arrange ground transport for 8:00? Thanks in advance!
  8. I see that the Victory is going into dry dock in 2020 and coming back with a new name: Radiance. I’m looking at a cruise to New England and Canada in September 2020. I wonder what refurbishments they’ll make and why they’re changing her name.
  9. Let's see how that works out. Suite Lounge Oasis Allure Harmony Symphony Liberty Independence Adventure Mariner Navigator Concierge Lounge Quantum Anthem Ovation Voyager Explorer Jewel Radiance Brilliance Serenade Vision Grandeur Rhapsody Enchantment (Majesty & Empress have no dedicated lounges of any kind) )(Spectrum is sui generis) 9 Suite Lounges -------- 13 Concierge Lounges
  10. Brilliance is part of the series called "Radiance class". Sister ships are Radiance, Serenade, and Jewel. Indeed each of the beautiful sisters still maintains a "Concierge Lounge"...has not converted to SL...thankfully. 🙂
  11. That is exactly how our kids felt on the Radiance! The counselors were playing with them on the water slide and dropping down key chains. If they caught them, they could keep them. I think we came home with 20 of them on that cruise. They were so energetic and fun. Our kids have cruised a lot (21 cruises by the time our youngest was 21) but RCI was always their favorite especially when there were very few kids onboard. Great experience for them!
  12. Oosterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2100. Also in port are Radiance OTS at the AS dock (blocking our view) from 0700-2130, Golden Princess at the FKL dock from 0800-2115, and Norwegian Joy at the AJ dock from 0700-1330 with Bliss taking her place from 1430-2300. Rain (50% chance) is expected during the morning but clearing out in the afternoon with "ample sunshine" in the afternoon. High temperature is forecast at 65F/18C and the low 46F/8C. Sunrise is at 4:21 am and sunset at 9:28 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Westerdam on Wednesday.
  13. Gutting the old Victory and turning it into the NEW Radiance. We are booked on it for February 2021. First-ever Big Chicken restaurant at sea, serving up favorites from Shaq, Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer and huge fried chicken fan! It is to be open very long hours including all day breakfast. several different chicken offerings. Hopefully it turns out great and will be put on other ships. it is complementary.
  14. This has not been my experience, and I've booked solo staterooms on three cruise lines. For an Alaska itinerary next year, the fare for an interior single on the Radiance (there are only three such cabins) was $950 on the day that booking opened. Today, a standard interior double booked as a single would be $1,918, and the cruise is more than a year away. I've also booked a single interior on Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam for $910 for seven days. On Royal Caribbean, the single supplement for a double stateroom can be somewhat mitigated by booking when a special rate such as a discount for the second passenger is in effect -- RC also applies it to the single supplement -- but the solo passenger is still paying what two passengers together would pay for the same double. Some NCL ships have a large number of studio cabins, all interior. Typically the fare is about 40% higher than the fare for each of two people in a double if booking well in advance and on the same day. One frequent poster on other boards writes about often getting a double as a single for less than the price of a studio, but she is comparing a last-minute booking for the double, when there are price cuts, with an advance booking for the studio. I can't see that there is even a general rule for this. It depends on both the time of booking and the popularity of the sailing. What is noteworthy about Royal Caribbean is that there are ships with oceanview or balcony singles.
  15. FASTER TO THE FUN (FTTF) Now guests can maximize their vacation fun with Carnival's Faster to the Fun (FTTF) package. This program is available for purchase via Carnival.com Shore Excursions. Space is limited. Simply click on your cruise ship departure port for availability. Faster to the Fun is very popular and sells out quickly so we encourage you to check back in case of cancellations. Faster to the Fun is open on sail dates through 2020, where applicable, in the following home ports: Baltimore, Charleston, Fort Lauderdale, Galveston, Jacksonville, Long Beach, Miami, Mobile, New Orleans, New York, Port Canaveral, San Juan, Seattle and Tampa. Faster to the Fun is not offered on Carnival Journeys departures, cruises in Europe, nor on cruises from the following home ports: Honolulu, Norfolk and Vancouver. It will be offered on the Carnival Panorama, starting with departures in February 2020, Carnival Radiance, starting with departures in January 2021 and Mardi Gras, starting in 2021 (date to be determined). The price is per stateroom, so only one guest needs to purchase Faster to the Fun and all occupants in the stateroom receive the benefits. Prices are subject to change and may vary by ship. If the OP's home port/day 1 excursion page in their Manage My Cruise is not showing FttF as being available/sold out then either for some reason it's not available for their cruise** for some other reason not mentioned in the chart, or there is a hiccup with their computer or device. If it is a device glitch checking for browser or app updates, clearing history and cache, and shutting down the browser or restarting the device usually helps. **though not noted in the chart special sailings like the Casino Premier cruises, Premier Getaway cruises, and possibly the Hot Streak casino offers tend to usually withhold FttF to general passengers until the special booking offers close out as these casino VIPs like Platinum+ and suite passengers do take away from the availability of priority embarkation and final debarkation slots.
  16. I know your feeling. We were on the Triumph in 2013 when it had the engine fire and have avoided the ship since (we actually avoided Carnival altogether for 4 years). We have sailed on the Sunshine this past March and are planning on the Radiance next May. With all that said, I would consider cruising on the Sunrise but it probably wouldn't be my first choice ;)
  17. An inside fits my needs! I need to be on a ship enjoying the good life, A balcony is an extra that I am willing to pay for, I actually stepped up to a spacious balcony on my next trip so that we could get the cool hump balcony on radiance next year for Hawaii. That was only a couple bucks more and seems worth it for the views and comfort of the extra balcony space. The thousands more for a suite is what gets me. perks don't seem worth the money and we don't need any more space in the room.

  19. For those of you wondering about site lines... being able to see all around you without obstruction top deck, it’s exactly like Radiance Class. Remember I mentioned earlier in the review there’s barely a forward view top deck due to the running track and Solarium roof top I’m Standing right beside Northstar
  20. Getting a head start on the trip report. Our cruise planning report can be found at... DW and I are retired and have only cruised a few times in the Caribbean and this is DWs 1st time in Alaska. We're doing a DIY 8 day pre-cruise prior to ship boarding in Seward.
  21. Well- I stopped with the Voyager Class- and even that one was not to my liking! Vision and Radiance Class are their best ships- why? Because of the light- with every twist and turn you are connected with the sea! Voyager and bigger- well rather like sailing in big shopping Mall- to many lounges without even a window to look out to the sea!
  22. Both ships are close in size and age. After the refurb the CCL Radience will carry about 800 more passengers than Jewel. The RCL Radiance class ships have more glass and windows then just about any ship out there and the only ships with outside glass elevators. Before the refurb CCL Radiance sailed as the Victory which was a very family and kid friendly ship. All things being equal I love RCL. Which ever you choose congrats and happy cruising.
  23. I would choose the Carnival Radiance over the Jewel of the Seas any day. Truthfully, I haven't been on either of those ships. However, I have been on the Sunshine, and I enjoyed it so much! The best cruise I've been on so far! Plus, get $275 more and free drinks while in the casino? Hello! I have heard that Barcelona is the pickpocket capital of Europe apparently, though I am not sure how reliable that is! The only negative I can think of is that the casino rate code is non-refundable so you would be out $198 if you decide to cancel. TLDR: Carnival Radiance, the Perks outweigh the Negatives
  24. You may have to call them, the one you are looking at is for the Radiance of the seas, not Carnival spirit.
  25. Hi all, My fiancé and I are currently booked on a seven night European sailing on Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas (April 19, 2020) as a honeymoon cruise (with a fully refundable deposit). I just got an email from Carnival with an incredible promo and now I'm second guessing our original itinerary -- we'd love to hear your thoughts! The new sailing we're looking at is a nine night European sailing on the Carnival Radiance (May 21, 2020). Both itineraries include stops at Florence/Pisa, Rome, and Naples. The Royal Caribbean sailing also visits Nice and Portofino plus has one day at sea while the Carnival Victory also stops in Sicily, Marseille, and Palma de Mallorca plus has two days at sea. The fares are within $12 of each other (total, not per person or per night). The Royal Caribbean sailing has a $225 OBC while the Carnival sailing has a $500 OBC plus free drinks while in the casino (OBC and drinks are part of the promo email I received today from the casino club). For us, the pros of saying on the Royal Carnival sailing include sailing closer to our wedding (~3 weeks after the wedding) and having the time to spend a few days in Barcelona before embarking. Pros of the Carnival ship include an extra $275 in OBC, free drinks while playing in the casino, getting an extra day in port and an extra sea day, and sailing on a (basically) brand new ship. Penny for your thoughts?
