  1. Getting a head start on the trip report. Our cruise planning report can be found at... DW and I are retired and have only cruised a few times in the Caribbean and this is DWs 1st time in Alaska. We're doing a DIY 8 day pre-cruise prior to ship boarding in Seward.

  3. Price! 😂 We decided based on amount of time in HI, islands visited, and total price. We were willing to do a longer cruise if the price was the same or better. We knew we wanted to go to Kauai and not all ships stop there. We booked over President's Day weekend when it seemed like every cruiseline website was having a sale. I priced out regular balcony cabin on Pride of America, a Celebrity ship, and Radiance of the Seas all for the first 2 weeks of May 2020. POA was their usual 7 night route for TWICE the price of Radiance - BUT Radiance was a 10 night sailing from Honolulu to Vancouver. Celebrity was about the same as POA and for 11 nights. With the money we saved on the less expensive cruise on Radiance, we can put some money into a pre-cruise stay at a nice hotel on Oahu, plus excursions. So we got an amazing price on a 10-night TP cruise, and can still afford to stay on Oahu 4-5 nights before the cruise and do fun excursions for the same cost as what just the cruise would have cost on POA.
  4. HEY friends. anyone booked on the to be referbed Radiance. for june 2020?? i haven't seen many post. and since its not even dry docked i know it'll be few n far between.
  5. Heard rumor some changes were made to Colony Club area on several of the Radiance class ships. Wood removed, remodeled, specialty restaurants added. Please tell me this is not true.
  6. Actually, the first half of this is completely incorrect -- safe (good) sushi actually requires the fish to have been frozen to a certain temperature to ensure all of the parasites have died: freezing fish at temperatures of -4 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 degrees Celsius) for seven days, or frozen at -31 degrees Fahrenheit (-35 degrees Celsius) for 15 hours, which kills any parasites Furthermore, it's worth noting that almost ALL of the sushi rolls served at Izumi (not including the sashimi/nigiri which is a different type of sushi) are cooked in one form or another -- from rolls with tempura shrimp, to unagi (eel that's been grilled) to smoked salmon (smoking it is a form of cooking). It's all been cooked! Lobster roll, the steak roll, the spider roll (soft-shell crab) -- all cooked!! We were on Radiance in April/May and we were able to dine on the a la carte whenever it was open. And I can confirm, the sushi at Izumi is delicious!
  7. Would someone please post the week's cruise compass for the southbound Alaskan cruise? Thank you so much for your help.
  8. We're doing our first Alaska cruise on the Radiance next month. We are thinking of trying the Chef's Table, which would also be a first for us. I know in general Alaska cruises are more casual, even on formal nights, but wondering if Chef's Table has a stricter dress code. DH would prefer not to pack his suit, so would a dressy collared shirt and tie be enough? Also, while I'm asking, has anyone done the Chef's Table and is it worth it?
  9. Hi, Can anyone tell me on what night the waiters, chefs and staff do the whole dance around the dining room during dinner?
  10. We bounce between Celebrity and RC. When cruising with RC we will only cruise on the Radiance, Voyager and Freedom class ships. No mega ships for us. The Radiance class ships are our favorite.
  11. Hi. I'm looking for some help for my sister. She is going on a cruise that was booked by her in-laws. It looks like they are in an ocean view room on deck for possibly 4012 room. It' s 2 adults and 2 children ages 2 and 6. Does anyone have some pictures of the rooms. The last cruise they got stuck with bunk beds which she didn't like and weren't able to use with the kids. I did check on the website. States 3rd and 4th Pullman bed avaliable . Is that pull down beds. I don't think they would use them. Would the room be set up as 2 singles with the 2 pullmans down. I think my sister was hoping for 1 large bed for 3 of them with either a small couch or a cot. Any theories or photos would be a huge help. I think she's feeling overwhelmed having not planned it herself. Thanks.
  12. how was the ship?? i have seen mixed reviews on her refurb.. the radiance is her sister so should be mostly the same
  13. Can someone please post the Cruise Compass for the Radiance of the Seas Northbound Alaska & Hubbard Glacier. TYI!
  14. As a solo, I find any of the lines I would consider (ie: NOT Carnival or NCL (except for Hawaii)) to be roughly the same price for equivalent cabin space. And living in NYC, you could not pay me to see a watered-down (has to be to fit into cruise line timeframes) “Broadway” show. I purposely sit on the end on RCCL so I can make a quick escape - and honestly don’t bother most of the time (I don’t do the mega behemoths - Radiance Class is the biggest RCCL I will do) and doubt I will bother with Equinox “entertainment”. I’d rather find a quiet place to curl up with a book. But that is why there are options for everyone.
  15. Did the same cruise on the Radiance in 2007 but couldn't do a land portion as we had to get back to work. Hoping to go again. We will spend about 12 days on land before boarding the Radiance for 34 nts to circumnavigate Australia, stopping in Bali, Tasmania, and in New Zealand. The Radiance ships are favorites, plus the Quantum class.
  16. Oasis Class has much more. Majesty has less. Different RC ships have different amenities, food options, sports facilities, entertainment, prices - all different. Quantum class, Freedom class, Radiance class, Sovereign class are like four different cruise lines.
  17. How long does Serenade of the Seas (or Radiance class ship) take clear when arriving to Boston for the first time following a Transatlantic sailing? I'm on the Sept. 10 5-night cruise to Bermuda. 5 years ago I was on the first Oasis cruise from Fort Lauderdale following her transatlantic sailing from drydock. Took a long time to clear ship and didn't get to board until well after 3pm. Since Serenade is a much smaller ship, I'm hoping it doesn't take that long to clear. Thanks
  18. My wife and I have cruised on the smaller ships NCL offers (Jewel, Pearl) 3 times and on RCL (Radiance of the Seas) once out of Tampa. We both felt more comfortable on NCL, thought the food was slightly better, and enjoyed the ship’s atmosphere more. I’m not sure if they were that different that we wouldn’t try RCL again.
  19. Yep, I remember the old machine with the doubles. Never been on Serenade. Was on Radiance last summer (coffee machine in Alaska > in the Caribbean even if it's the same machine) and Oasis twice in Summer 2017. The machine is your picture seems slightly different than the one I have in my head but my memory isn't the greatest and I only get to cruise in the Summer so it's usually been roughly a year since my last cruise (unless I go twice in the same Summer),
  20. Very disappointing work by the cruise director Cruzin Susan. Tomorrow our first day in Maui absolutely nothing going on except for a dance party. The cruise compass looks as baron as a desert. No headline show , no production show just throw up a movie and job done.
  21. Interesting We used to cruise on both lines almost equally. Decided to stick with X to move up in the loyalty program but still enjoyed Navigator, Radiance etc. Then Royal started with the much bigger ships. Tried Oasis but just not a good fit for us from dining to needing tickets for shows and events, although we did like the cocktail hour buffet. Other than a special itin of family vacation with kiddos, doubt we would go back to Royal. We liked EDGE but hope the newer and bigger E Class shops are not overly Royalized!
  22. I’m so sorry - I know this has been asked 100 times, but I’m having a horrible time searching the forums on the ship’s WiFi. We are on Radiance on the ultimate dining package. Are gratuities included, or should we tip as if we are paying full price? Or - are gratuities are included, but we should leave a little extra to be generous? Thanks!!!
  23. Hey everyone... it's been a while! But I'm back, and ready for another review. I have been waiting for this sailing with anticipation more so than any other sailing since Quantum's first ever Caribbean sailing Dec 1, 2014. In fact, I had Anthem booked 3 years ago and had to move my deposit over to another ship as the timing did not work for me, and never re-booked Anthem. I've been yearning to get on another Quantum Class sailing as I really loved Quantum. I shared my Quantum review above with my roll call as many cruisers on this sailing have never been on a Q Class ship. That first photo is epic! Hardly anyone has been on the front bow area of the ship since Quantum, not even on Anthem. And now with the All Access Tour scaled down in half, it's no longer offered. If you've never been on Q CLass and would like a trip down memory lane, have a look at Quantum above. Back to Ovation and Alaska... I've been party to many "Q Class in Alaska" threads over the last 5 years here in CC. I was a HUGE fan since day one that a Q Class ship would be a great hit and best seller for Alaskan itineraries. I just couldn't believe it when they sent a totally inner focused ship with a fully exposed top deck (in Alaskan weather) the Explorer to the Pacific Northwest. Totally stupid in my opinion. But alas, 5 years in the making and Ovation is finally here... in my own home town no less! Vancouver is beautiful and consistently voted in the top 20 cities to visit and/or live in in the world. Those cruisers who are too lazy to hang around a day pre or post cruise are doing themselves an injustice. Above you see the downtown core of Vancouver, with Canada Place Pier in the lower right (the "Sails"). To get their, Ovation has to transit under the Lion's Gate Bridge through a small pass in the upper right before reaching open ocean. The bridge is 198 feet mid span... Q Class is 198 feet tall on a good day. Uhm.... ok.... so there's an issue here. Above is the 178 foot tall Radiance going under the bridge with only 20 feet clearance. So how will Ovation get under?? Well, the current Transpacific from Hawaii will be arriving early to Vancouver the night before debarkation at 8pm in order to get the lowest tide level possible. Not only that, I suspect we'll witness the rare event of the funnels being retracted. And even with all that, there's supposedly about a 5 foot clearance of the Lion's Gate Bridge. I've also been involved in many Panama Canal threads regarding size of ships, and which ships may or may not pass under the Bridge of Americas on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal... this sailing re-enforces the best answers given by BillH48 and ChengP on those threads, that likely only perfect conditions would allow for a Q Class ship to get under the BoA as it is a sister bridge with same span height as the Lion's Gate. We are currently experiencing summer weather this week in Vancouver. Today it was 25 degree Celcius/about 75 degrees F. On Sunday and Monday it cools a bit to 65F/18C... still great weather for a beautiful sail-in and sail-away from the port of Vancouver. If anyone is around Stanley Park on Monday night, they should definitely get to a view point somewhere to watch the ship leave. According to slack tide charts found by AlanF on our role call (Thx Alan!) we are estimating Ovation to leave Canada Place around 6:45-7 and get to the bridge somewhere between 7:10-7:30 to hit that low tide. So why this itinerary? It's one of a kind and is not being repeated. 4 port stops, 2 glacier viewings, and basically (for me anyways) a round trip Vancouver-to-Seattle sailing which is a simple bus trip back up from Seattle when the cruise is finished. The itinerary is outstanding with a ton of extended time at the ports. Date Port Arrive Depart Monday, May 13 Vancouver, BC, Canada 5:00pm Tuesday, May 14 At Sea Wednesday, May 15 At Sea Thursday, May 16 Icy Strait Point, AK 9:00am 8:00pm Friday, May 17 Sitka, AK 7:00am 6:00pm Saturday, May 18 Hubbard Glacier, AK (Cruising) Sunday, May 19 Juneau, AK 7:00am 9:00pm Monday, May 20 Skagway, AK 7:00am 8:30pm Tuesday, May 21 Endicott Arm, AK (Cruising) Wednesday, May 22 At Sea Thursday, May 23 At Sea Friday, May 24 Seattle, WA 6:00am I'll have VOOM on this cruise, so we'll see the O3b satellite network works for Alaska, especially for all the negative internet reviews on radiance the last few years. I have a few more posts to add before cruise day on Monday. This is going to be an AWESOME cruise! 😁
  24. Three years ago is a lifetime in dress code relaxation time. Vision class ships do not have and never had the day of the week in the elevator. That was an innovation with the Radiance class.
  25. We just booked an Australian cruise as part of our Oz holiday for hubbies grand retirement sailing from Brisbane Jan 2021 !!!!!
