  1. I have read that people feel like the Radiance of the Seas is their favorite ship. Just wondering why. I have been on a couple other ships in the same class (Jewel, Brilliance, Serenade) and wondering if there is anything different about the Radiance.
  2. We were on the July 26th sailing of Radiance and did the Land Tour after. We were supposed to return to Anchorage from Denali by train, but were told there was a rock slide on the tracks. We returned by bus. This was something we were looking forward to. We still have not heard about compensation for this cancelled portion of our trip and I feel this is terrible Customer Service. I am not even convinced the story we were given was even true. I am very disappointed in Royal for not reaching out or coming to some settlement.
  3. I fly to Miami Saturday evening and will board the Empress for a 6 night getaway to Key West, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. This was (for me) something of a last minute booking, just a couple of months ago. My style is a bit different than many, I will normally post just once a day unless something unusual, and my style tends to be narrative more than pictorial. This thread will be a companion to my blog (http://getawaysfrom21044,wordpress.com) which will also be the hosting site for my photos, and at the top of the page are tabs to pages with Compass and menus. A bit about me. I’m pretty much an out of control, sailing on several lines, but mostly Crystal, Cunard, Holland America, and to a lesser extent Royal. My totals for this year will be 94 days HAL, 33 Crystal, 26 Cunard, and 6 Royal. My Royal activity has been mostly out of Baltimore (Enchantment and then Grandeur), but I’ve also sailed Allure, Anthem, Monarch, Jewel, and Radiance (not yet on the mid-size ships). I tend to prefer smaller ships although amenities and service are also important. I’m a bit unsure of the Empress as although my 3 favorite ships (Crystal Serenity, Crystal Symphony, and Prinsendam) are roughly the same size the Empress carries more people than any 2 of them combined. I hear she isn’t crowded and hope that will be true; I really like her Bermuda itineraries next year. This will be my first cruise as D+. I welcome questions although it may take me a little while to respond. I also invite any of my roll call members to add their perspectives to the thread. Roy

  7. People have very strong opinions when it comes to Alaska. I would suggest you decide what are your must dos on your vacation and see what ship fits that plan best. I would also look at the cost of flights to get there as those are expensive depending on what time of season you go. Are you looking at just the cruise or adding a land tour also, that will add a lot too. If you do a tour through the cruise line, the days start early, some with bag pulls at 6am and optional excursions on those days can go late. We finished our ATV tour at Denali after 10pm at night since it was still light out. I would look at some of the reviews in the Alaska forum and get an idea what you want to do and see. Then look at an itinerary that fits that best. We ended up on Radiance because we knew we wanted to do a cruise tour prior to our cruise as we wanted to see Denali National Park. We did the Tundra Wilderness Tour that doesn't get you all the way to the end of the road but was wonderful. Others will say that isn't enough but it was for us for our first trip. A southbound cruise was also important to us as we wanted to get the longer flights out of the way since we had to fly back to the east coast. Flying home from Vancouver was better than flying home from Anchorage. Had we just chosen our cruise for the ship, we would have gone with Ovation as we love that class of ship. Radiance and Serenade are beautiful too, but we find them to be a more laid back cruise. Look at the total picture and decide what is important for your group and fits your budget. If a round trip from Seattle or Vancouver is what fits best budget wise and time wise, that is great. We are looking at Ovation for 2020 since we won't be able to do a 2+ week vacation. Ovation will at least get us back to most of what we want to see. Good luck!
  8. As much as I love the larger ships, I am concerned that an Oasis class ship will be all the more crowded and hectic getting on and off the ship at European ports. Anyone have an opinion on which class of ship may be best for a European cruise? Thanks all!
  9. Some of the best we've had were on RCI....True Aft (wake facing) especially the #1100 corner on Radiance & Jewel. And also the aft corners on Vision deck #8
  10. Where does the Diamond Club happy hour take place on Majesty? We were on Radiance in February and every night the entire Viking Crown Lounge was reserved for Diamond members. Does anyone know if that is the case on Majesty?
  11. Our invites were on Oasis class only as Oasis class helipad is not open to the public. It was for suite/Pinnacle only. Radiance class has a helipad that is often open and anyone can use. That is a nice spot for any sail away or as you approach a port. M
  12. Hi, we've been on every class in the RC family, we loved Anthem so much we did another on Ovation and are doing one on Quantum in October, we have gone back and done other classes as we we like the Vision and Radiance class with all the sea views which is why we like the 270 and Solarium on Anthem. If we had sailed on Anthem first of all it might have been a disappointment going on other ships without all the bells and whistles but as long as we can find somewhere to sit and watch the world go by we are happy.
  13. They in the same class but is any thing different between them ? Both will be sailing from Australia In 2020 . Thanks 🙂
  14. Would someone please post the week's cruise compass for the southbound Alaskan cruise? Thank you so much for your help.
  15. Love her. Great for cold weather sailing. Was not impressed with Oasis. Sailed Quantum and Anthem. Will be on Anthem in October. Also like all Radiance class ships and will sail on Radiance in February in Australia.
  16. There are places that the smaller Radiance class ships can go, ....that the larger ships like Ovation cannot venture. My next Alaska trip (August next year) involves renting a car to spend time in Talkeetna and Fairbanks, then back to Anchorage for that excellent early morning train trip to Seward, where we are spending three days prior to the cruise. Boarding for B2B on Radiance Seward to Vancouver and back. Have been to Alaska three times. With each visit...our problem was that we wished we had more time there. This visit will be for a full month. 🙂
  17. If you want to explore quite a bit of Alaska then currently the best option would be the One Way cruises on Radiance from Vancouver to Seward or vice versa in connection with a land tour, where depending on people's interests and time limits you can books shorter or longer ones. Personally I would recomend a cruise starting in Seward going up to Vancouver and starting with the land tour in Alaska since this is the most exhausting part of the journey. If land tours are not someones thing then the Serenade itinary offered as of 2021 would be not bad. The one of Itinarary Ovation offered this May was great as well and if they would offer it again it would be the perfect cruise for everyone that wants to see more of Alaska but is not interested in a land tour. Anyhow, the day will come that we will see ships like the Ovation to replace the Radiance to offer the same one way itinararies etc. or if port restrictions will remain such thorough cruises will only be offered in future by Celebrity, Azamara or Silversea (RCCL group)
  18. We were on the Sunshine in January last year and we thoroughly enjoyed the ship and our cruise. A few observation from our cruise... - There was not a lot of kids on board. - The crew did a great job spreading people out. Different activities and venues highlighted in the fun times at similar times...more so than on other ships. I’m quite positive the Sunrise and Radiance will be very much the same as the Sunshine in terms of crowds, venues, and overall experience. To my first point, I would try to cruise on one of these ships when the kids are in school. To the second point, the crew and entertainment staff will learn how and when to spread the crowds out. I remember when the Sunshine first launched the complaints were very similar about crowds. I’m sure they will improve. I’m very close to booking a cruise on the Sunrise, not concerned in the least.
  19. I do not know who told you 15 year life and how old this data was, but I can tell you ALL the major cruise lines have ships over that old and Carnival, Royal NCL and (your own cruise line HAL) have about half of their fleet being over 15 years old. How many extra people do you think they were “stuffing” in the retrofits (which again all cruise lines are doing not just Carnival)? Carnival has come out with new ships as well as revitalize 3 of their ships with major makeovers (Sunshine, Sunrise, Radiance). Carnival has launched new builds in 2016 Vista, 2018 Horizon, and soon to come out Panorama 2019 and a totally new class of ship Mardi Gras (the first cruise ship to run on LNG) in 2020 and an unnamed sister ship in 2022. Just wanted to give you facts on your comment about just choosing relaunches....
  20. The Radiance is the last planned ship to get this upgrade. I will not comment on the cramming comment.
  21. well it is more of a nightmare LOL i was on the radiance of the seas a few years ago think it would be 2018 and well a freak wave in the middle of the night sent me out of my head and i headbutted the Fridge 10 stitches later and a night in the first aid room and a bandage on my head all led too me having dinner with the captain of the ship and no i do not mean with lots of other people at the table the captain and myself ad 2 other staff members so what turned out to be a bad start ended up being dinner with the captain
  22. Wait... they have the whole next class of ships that they can cram more people into. It may not end with the victory/radiance.
  23. carnival is doing the same thing next year with the victory when it becomes the radiance
  24. We are booked on an Alaska cruise for June 2020 on Radiance. We have never done a 'land package' add on but with Alaska, it was a must for us....if we are going, we are doing it. I never asked how meals work and evening activities on the land package. Are they included? Share with me, the experiences that you have had on an Alaska cruise....love to hear about it!
  25. The bow on the Serenade (and the other Radiance class ships) is generally open to the passengers all the time. I have seen it closed at times during the late overnight hours and of course in inclement weather. The bow was always open to the passengers during the transit. I am sure you can imagine the bow is prime real estate for the passage through the first locks, Gatun in the direction you are going. It does thin out after Gatun and gets a little more crowded for the afternoon passage through the Pacific Locks, usually not as crowded as in the morning. I think some of the interesting stops other than at the Canal would be found in Cartagena and Guatemala. Lots of interesting things in Cartagena in and around the walled City and Antigua Guatemala, the one time capital of Guatemala. As for your stop in Colon for Panama, seeing the locks (both old and new) from shore side might be something you would take in. There are also trips to the Embera Indians which are unique and excursions to Panama City where there is also a walled portion of the City which dates back to 1673. By the way the original Panama City (Panama Viejo) was founded 500 years ago on Aug 15, 1519. However some tours do not cover this portion of Panama City in their itinerary. Check out your Roll Call for some ideas if you are looking to use someone else besides RC for tours. In Cartagena Dora gets pretty good reviews and Okey Dokey Tours in Costa Rica seem to rate fairly well. In Panama I have used non ship services, but I don't have anything I can readily recommend.
