  1. We just finished our first Alaskan cruise, we being my wife and I, both Floridians and both flirting with middle age. We did the Aug 9 NB on Radiance of the Seas with 2 days pre cruise in Vancouver and 3 days post cruise in Denali, all on our own. In Vancouver we did a guided tour of Victoria and post cruise we rented a car in Anchorage and drove to Denali where we stayed for 3 days. All I can say is wow, what an amazing trip, Alaska is a special place to say the least. I'm a pretty busy guy who doesn't have much time to sit behind this laptop with details that has already probably been covered on this site so I figured I will try to keep this to pics only with minimal words. Over the years I have got some good advice from this site, one being to buy a good camera for Alaska and learn to use it, so about 5 months before our sail date I bought the Panasonic Lumix FZ-1000 and it did not disappoint. Along with the FZ-1000 some of the pics are from a iPhone 10s which are pretty good as well. Here goes.....
  2. After seeing all of the many negative reviews about the refurbished Carnival Sunrise etc...anyone concerned if there will be similar issues with the Radiance?
  3. After seeing all of the many negative reviews about the refurbished Carnival Sunrise etc...anyone concerned if there will be similar issues with the Radiance?
  4. We are on the TA also. I have zero trepidation about sailing on the Radiance. Not sure whether you think she is new or an expensive overhaul has to do with how many people will be on it. The TA will be totally different experience. That said, they did not think they did anything wrong. They learned plenty from the Sunshine and improved on the Sunrise (different shipyard and work company) and there are different features. Relax, we will have a blast. Have you joined the roll call?
  5. I'm working on a Sunrise review right now. Since Triumph (Sunrise) and Victory (Radiance) are the same design, I think the negatives will still be found on Radiance. However, while I certainly found negatives on Sunrise, the negatives were mostly with the ":choke points" - places where the congestion is too much. Overall, I liked Sunrise and would sail her again. I didn't like the main buffet, the Liquid Lounge and the Limelight Lounge - but there were options for meals aside from the buffet, and I only went to the two lounges once each.
  6. they will be a similar issue with the radiance. this is what happens when you add more cabins and decrease public space
  7. Sorry...round trip out of Seattle spends too much time getting to/from Alaska. Can you at all consider a northbound cruise out of Vancouver ending up in Seward ? Sailing to Alaska I personally (4 cruises) feel is a much better option. May is our favorite time to sail on RCI Radiance. Also we prefer a balcony and you might be surprised at the plus of having that quiet personal space as an option with the beautiful scenery. Best of luck and enjoy whatever works out best for you.
  8. I fly to Miami Saturday evening and will board the Empress for a 6 night getaway to Key West, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. This was (for me) something of a last minute booking, just a couple of months ago. My style is a bit different than many, I will normally post just once a day unless something unusual, and my style tends to be narrative more than pictorial. This thread will be a companion to my blog (http://getawaysfrom21044,wordpress.com) which will also be the hosting site for my photos, and at the top of the page are tabs to pages with Compass and menus. A bit about me. I’m pretty much an out of control, sailing on several lines, but mostly Crystal, Cunard, Holland America, and to a lesser extent Royal. My totals for this year will be 94 days HAL, 33 Crystal, 26 Cunard, and 6 Royal. My Royal activity has been mostly out of Baltimore (Enchantment and then Grandeur), but I’ve also sailed Allure, Anthem, Monarch, Jewel, and Radiance (not yet on the mid-size ships). I tend to prefer smaller ships although amenities and service are also important. I’m a bit unsure of the Empress as although my 3 favorite ships (Crystal Serenity, Crystal Symphony, and Prinsendam) are roughly the same size the Empress carries more people than any 2 of them combined. I hear she isn’t crowded and hope that will be true; I really like her Bermuda itineraries next year. This will be my first cruise as D+. I welcome questions although it may take me a little while to respond. I also invite any of my roll call members to add their perspectives to the thread. Roy
  9. Just got an email that on our 9/20/20 Cruise on Radiance out of Tokyo has been forced to not stop at Okinawa due to overcrowding. Another Japan port is being substituted, and as an added bonus we will be spending an additional two hours in....wait for it......Hong Kong. The stop in HK is now listed as 7 AM to 11:59 PM. Our 2/24/20 Cruise on Quantum had previously dropped Okinawa for the same reason, adding two ports in Vietnam at No additional charge except the Vietnam visa thing. So that is 7 months difference, but the Okinawa port problems are the same. If you have Okinawa listed as a POC I would expect an itinerary change. For me it gives another reason (excuse) to cruise the Pacific in 2021 or whenever Okinawa is available again. At least the changes were made many months before final payment is due.
  10. Hey Frequent floaters! My name is Joshua and I work remotely for a software company. Since I can work from anywhere with good internet, I've been working aboard Royal Caribbean ships for a change of scenery (6 Cruises last year, 12 this year). I've found Royal Caribbeans internet to be the best in the industry, however, there IS a difference from ship-to-ship within their fleet. Not all "Voom" internet is the same. They use different satellites based on geographic location AND based on the technology on the ship. And it's all marketed and priced as if it's the same. It's not. 🙂 Here's where you come in--I'm trying to compile a Ship List that will expose which ships have REAL Voom Internet (fast speed, low latency/delay, O3B Network-BEST) and which have NOT-REAL Voom Internet (moderate speeds, high latency/delay, SpeedCast Network-Just Ok). A speedtest from the wifi-connected device will reveal this on the ship. The NOT-REAL Voom internet operates much slower as the delay from ship to satellite is 650+ms whereas the REAL Voom internet operates around 200ms. This is most notable when doing video calls like Facetime or Zoom or playing videos on Facebook/Youtube. For me, the internet is my life on the ship. Here is my list so far. SHIP Adventure--NOT REAL Voom (as of Jan 2019 Thanks @John&LaLa) Allure--REAL Voom (as of Nov 2017) Anthem--Coming Soon (Sailing Aug 2019) Brilliance--NOT REAL Voom (as of Jan 2019) Empress--NOT REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Enchantment-- Explorer-- Freedom--REAL Voom (as of Dec 2018) Grandeur-- Harmony--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Independence--REAL Voom (as of April 2019) Jewel-- Liberty-- Majesty--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Mariner--NOT Real Voom (as of July 2019) Navigator-- Ovation--REAL Voom (except when in Alaska, then terrible internet) Oasis--Coming Soon (Sailing Dec 2019) Quantum-- Radiance-- Rhapsody-- Serenade--NOT Real Voom (Thanks @John&LaLa) Spectrum-- Symphony--REAL Voom (Thanks @Ourusualbeach!) Vision-- Voyager-- LOCATION/ITINERARIES Alaska--Real Voom NOT available regardless of Ship Technology (O3B network isn't available above aprx Vancouver Lattitude) Caribbean--REAL Voom Available depending on Ship Technology Bermuda-- Canada/New England--Sailing August 29 on Anthem Panama Canal-- Mexico Pacific-- Meditteranean-- TransAtlantic-- MiddleEast-- For what it's worth, I've asked Royal Caribbean for clarification on which ships have the O3B Network Technology ("Real Voom") and they declined to answer. If you've been on a recent cruise, or are on one now and did a speed test or asked the IT manager, would you help me update this list? Here are two examples of speedtests through Ookla's Speedtest App, showing the difference between REAL Voom and NOT REAL Voom. Would you help me out?
  11. Thanks so much :). I wanted to love Allure (Oasis class in general) but just didn't. Had a great time and the entertainment was spectacular. I'm sure I will sail on Oasis class again because the ship design offers SOOOOO much: but Radiance class is still my absolute favorite. To the OP: Sorry for being off topic. Still offering to help you out with choosing excursions that aren't sponsored by the ship if that interests you at all.

  14. Unfortunately my husband and I have experienced this as well on RC. We'd sailed many times with our daughters were younger, in a regular balcony cabin, usually on the hump, with our girls across the hall in an interior. Once the nest became empty and it was just us, we decided to mix things up a bit and try sailing in suites. Something different, and it would get us to Diamond faster, for better perks/discounts. Of course we loved it, but then we got to discover the whole Pinnacle thing. It was a B2B we did on Freedom of the Seas in an Owners Suite. We figured we'd skip the drink package because we have the concierge lounge available for our pre-dinner drinks. I think they may have changed the lounge situation on these ships, but back then it was a smaller interior lounge with no windows. First night, line out the door starting at 4:30, and you couldn't get in that lounge with a shoe horn. We met several P couples on our cruises who were very warm and welcoming, who I'm still in contact with on social media, and others who weren't. We ended up getting a drink package and never really used the lounge at all. That was the same cruise where we were seated in the dining room next to a Pinnacle couple who were cruising with friends who were either new to RC or new to cruising. They were so demanding of the wait staff, I felt so sorry for the assistant waiter. When something didn't happen fast enough, the man actually clapped his hands in her face and said "chop! chop!" (He really did that...we couldn't believe it.) Of course, that made her even more nervous and frazzled. On our way out that night we told the matre d what we'd witnessed, and that his staff were obviously trying their very best and these people were just not very nice people. He thanked us and moved our table away from them. Probably our worst experience was on the Harmony of the Seas transatlantic in 2016. The "big one" bringing Harmony to the US for the first time. We were in a GS with access to CK and the lounge. On the very first night we went to the lounge for a drink, we were told by some people standing just inside the door, "this lounge is for Pinnacles only." I went around the corner to the concierge desk and asked the 2 who were on for our cruise if that was the case. They were very apologetic and found seats for my husband and I. Regardless, it still turned out to be a great cruise. I really enjoy talking to the people in top tier because they obviously love to cruise, and I enjoy hearing about their favorite itineraries, etc. In fact, we did the transatlantic because we were told by a very nice couple we met in the CL on Radiance that if we enjoyed sea days we should try a TA. Since sailing with RC we've done 3 cruises with Celebrity in suites, and haven't experienced anything like that with the few Zenith members that we've met in the lounges.
  15. We did a Northbound cruise on Radiance a few years ago and loved every second of it! Our group of 6 all agreed that we're glad we started in Vancouver and went North as things seemed to get better as we went North. While we wouldn't have been disappointed going South, we just liked the build up to the glacier, etc. The days are long and we didn't spend much time on the ship so we skipped the drink package this trip and enjoyed the 2 bottles of wine we brought with us instead. A balcony is an absolute must for Alaska, IMO. We spent a lot of time on our aft balcony and there were always great views and we saw many whales, seals, otters, eagles, etc. Bring binoculars!
  16. I have to toss in my $0.02 worth here. Our 1st and recent cruise in Alaska was on Radiance. We (I) went to "see" Alaska and spent very little of my time touring the ship. In fact we did not even take in any late night shows. Unlike Caribbean cruises. Our loss, I'm sure. I spent the majority of my time trying to view scenery from the ship. When it got dark, which was late, we enjoyed sitting in the Centrum listening to some of the small entertainers and people watching. Then we slept. Our port times were long and we did an extensive (8 day) land tour prior to sailing. We ARE looking to possibly sail on Westerdam next time (smaller ship) and are even looking at the really small ships that sail Alaska like Alaska Dream Cruises or American Cruise Lines or Fantasy Cruises.
  17. When we booked our May cruise this year in June of last year, we were also so stoked it hurt. This place is where you'll find most if not all of the answers you're looking for. I've been trying to research the "which side is better" question for a few weeks since only one time did we have a view not looking at the docks. I've been watching several ships recently (Radiance and Westerdam) using https://www.livecruiseshiptracker.com/ It seems to be really difficult to figure it out. I think one way that might give you a clue is to look at the pricing structure of any future planned cruise to see which side (port or starboard) is higher $$$. Recently, I did notice about a $600 difference on one Radiance cruise. I know that the dock side can be changed by the pilot/captain on the spur of the moment so not sure there is a positive way to find out ahead of time. Maybe talk with a TA or cruise planner. Our 1st Alaska cruise on May 24th was going to be a balcony for sure. We wanted to be able to relax and watch the sea and land float by. I don't regret it. I'm not sure that next time we would save the $$$ for other expenses. Sometimes, you can get a hell of a deal by waiting til the last minute but we were not gamblers in any way. I've read several places that 53 days out on a flight booking is the ideal time to book. When we were watching flights b4 booking that did not work as we wanted very specific seats and had to pull the trigger early. We did get good prices with Alaska Air since we use the BOA Alaska Mileage Plan card so get Companion Fare and mileage discounts. I used http://matrix.itasoftware.com/ to watch flight pricing. These boards are full of tips and tricks but you have to prowl around and ask specific questions. My very long and as yet unfinished trip report is at https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2660632-trip-report-may-24-2019-radiance-of-the-seas-seward-vancouver/ You will find tons of advice on many other trip reports at the top of the Alaska pages.
  18. We did south bound on Radiance with a cruise tour prior to the cruise. This gets the longer flights out of the way at the beginning of the trip. The land portion was also very long days, so having the cruise after that to relax was great, We had a balcony and used it a lot, especially when at Hubbard Glacier and doing the Inside Passage. We are looking to do Alaska in 2021 again too.
  19. I have read that people feel like the Radiance of the Seas is their favorite ship. Just wondering why. I have been on a couple other ships in the same class (Jewel, Brilliance, Serenade) and wondering if there is anything different about the Radiance.
  20. Considering doing consecutive cruises (Northbound and Southbound Alaska) in this OS. Is balcony large enough? Is balcony private? Is there a better cabin choice on OS category?
  21. At least you know your check in will be first class......yep I know.. before you say it.....I will get Jo to handle it. 😁 What are the other two? Serenade & Radiance....and ???
  22. Starting this off again on our new Board. Walt , could you please lock the thread on the old board. Many thanks. David. Who is cruising ? 23. As much as I love the larger ships, I am concerned that an Oasis class ship will be all the more crowded and hectic getting on and off the ship at European ports. Anyone have an opinion on which class of ship may be best for a European cruise? Thanks all!
