  1. Thank you boeckli. I might still ask. I did get one on Radiance, due to a medical condition.
  2. Hi i have scoured the deckplans and looked on the RCI website but I can’t work out if there is ice cream or soft serve (aside from on the MDR menu) available or if there is pizza available on Serenade (travelling with teens, this is important!). Four years ago I was on Radiance (sister ship) which at that time had only soft serve frozen yogurt in Windjammer, and no pizza but did have a hot dog/grill place outside Windjammer near the pool. many thanks Lou

  4. If you are on an Oasis class, the Park Cafe at lunch and the Aqua Theatre shows. If you are on a Radiance class ship that has an outdoor Windjammer area aft, get there early.
  5. So I have now sailed on the Carnival Sunrise and can give my own personal opinion of the ship and my experience. There is a mix between the many who think that carnival has done a great job in their $200 million upgrade and reintroduction of this ship and those who are not as impressed. I made up my mind that I was going to enjoy this cruise no matter what so my thoughts below are an assessment of what I saw and heard and what I thought while on the cruise and now after the cruise. We had a wonderful family trip even though there were some very glaring issues that came up on our trip. I refused to let them ruin my trip but I have written them below. On this cruise I met many new cruisers along with experienced Royal, Norwegian and even European cruisers who had come on the ship thinking it was new and were not impressed. I personally couldn’t believe that they did not do some research on the ship before they boarded and but was not surprised at their disappointment in the amenities and offerings. However, unfortunately this seemed to be a common undertone among the guests who were chatting in common areas. I did not come across many people who were very excited about the ship - but to be fair I didn’t come close to speaking everyone. I do love to ask people if I see a blue card if they have cruised before and their thoughts on their first carnival cruise as well as asking fellow platinum and diamond how their cruising experiences have changed over the years and how the different ships compare. The consensus of people I spoke to weather it be rookies or Carnival pros was that as a company it seemed that Carnival is selling a lower frills, discounted brand and this ship particularly was an example of that- I did notice something new on this cruise - there was only one night of late comedy. Adult comedy was 8:30 and 9:30 which stank for us since we had late (8:15) seating for dinner (old habit). The early show wasn’t finished in time and the late show started before we finished at dinnner. The other shows were also 7:30 and 9:30. I personally think the shows are a bit amateur on Carnival anyway- but still entertaining to see at times. The CD (Chris Williams, known as the flying Scotsman) did his own show that was absolutely the best show I have seen on the any carnival cruise. He sings and dances - a one man show!!! That said I am not sure why the comedy has been changed but its possible that on this ship it’s because the comedy theatre (Punchliners comedy club in the limelight lounge) is too small to fit the number of ppl interested, but that’s my own opinion. Yes I am scratching my head why they don’t have late comedy in the main showroom (the Liquid Lounge) more often in the evening/night hours. The Sunrise doesn’t have any large common areas or without noise. Everywhere you go there is some activity, singer or music. Especially in the evening and night time - they have karaoke (which most of the time sounds pretty bad) that takes place in the red frog pub that is heard very clearly at the alchemy bar/lounge area and even at the Bonsai (for pay) sushi restaurant. While these Sitting area are nice, they are always being utilized and are never quiet to just sit, relax, people watch and socialize. There are two pools on board - both family friendly. Unfortunately no adult-only pool if you don’t like the splashing and jumping of the kids. I was upset that I saw many very young kids in diapers (not kiddie swimmer-made for pool) in the pool and yes it only took 24 hours for the pool to be drained for the first of multiple times secondary to poop and then a couple of vomitings on other days. The lifeguards on duty blow whistles at bad behavior but there is no enforcement of a code of conduct. The pools are very crowded as are the pool decks and there is very little extra space to move around. The hot tubs were also all family friendly and the behavior there was also unbelievable as there were about 20 kids in-and-out of all the hot tubs and they were swimming/jumping in and even doing cannon balls to enter while their parents watched them. I personally utilized the hot tubs as we entered the ports (PR was a late arrival) and they were empty. Cruise ships are designed to offer you a fun and relaxing vacation. Guests on board spend hard earned money on their vacations and expect certain vacation luxuries for it. This particular ship is a vacation value ship but not a luxury vacation ship - You can and will have fun and enjoy the ship but the details that you find on some of the other cruise lines don’t exist here. This particular ship is noticeably cramped and was not well thought out. I can only think that the ship was originally built many years back when things were probably more simple and service was given differently. The ship is nowhere close to the modern marvels of the other cruise lines and they did very little to make this ship technologically advanced to today’s cruise market. There are no differences between this “upgraded” ship and their other older ships except for more venues that are jammed all over the lido deck and other common areas. They couldn’t even invest a few bucks to make the pictures digital and they are all still spread out on shelves like it’s 1995. The decor of the ship is just a new mix of bland colors with a sprinkle of the old Triumph motif which doesn’t match it’s new name. On this cruise I had 3 rooms , 2 cheers cards, 4 soda cards, paid for massages, liquor at the fun shops, excursions and bought sushi daily - that added up to a pretty penny. This ship, I feel didn’t give me the value I thought it should have for that money spent. Carnival missed any hope of making this ship more desirable than their other ships or bringing on real upgrades that would make this ship either par or above par to other ships in the fleet or in the other cruise brands. There was clearly not enough space on the ship for the number of people that were on it and it dampens any positive thing they did right on the ship. There were 3900 plus passengers on our sailing - yes almost 4000 passengers! (As per upper staff) If you want different options to eat out, they have added various restaurants but you will wait on lines everywhere for everything and anything. The buffet was by far the worst area with lines and bottle necking everywhere as they was clearly not enough room for the food/seating and getting around the area as a whole. Forget a seat once you got your food in this area as those were a premium and if you were lucky you got to share half a table with strangers who were already sitting down but felt bad to watch you circle the seating area yet another time in the hopes of finding any seats at one table at the same time. Even the coffee shop which is larger than it needs to be and offers nothing more than sister ships - maybe less as there are only two flavors of ice cream - carnival sunshine has a full ice cream bar in its coffee area - was understaffed with only one barista most of the time, who generally worked very slowly and was confused very easily. This ship is not new or close to it and even the staff seemed to acknowledge that people were thinking that and judging their cruising experience as such. When they spoke about the surveys that would be sent to the guests following the cruise, they would tell us that we shouldn’t rate the ship - the survey should only be about the staff and service. The staff strives for 100% satisfaction and I believe they are doing that, but the ship experience is bringing the score down and it was evident as they had to clearly state this to the customer. The ship was very clean and they were constantly cleaning it - which was great as I have been on other carnival ships where this was not the case. The ship has plenty of signs of an aging ship coming through the new paint and areas that need fixing. The new(??)upper deck flooring was bubbling in many areas which to me felt was a tripping hazard, the heavy smoke is still a big issue in the casino and the comedy area (limelight lounge)which is grossly undersized is hot all the time. Smoke from the casino also seeps up to floors 6 and 7, which we found to be irritating and uncomfortable. It Doesn’t seem like they will address these issues as it’s been written about for three months already so be aware it will be here when ever you sail. The most positive thing this ship has going for it is the staff. This was the best and most positive, helpful, happy staff I have ever seen on a carnival ship. They were all on their “A” game. If you are sailing this ship in the next while rest assured the staff is amazing. The upper officers are engaging and available on the ship. Like I mentioned earlier, CD is by far the most talented on the fleet (but he is going on vacation soon). I wish I could take these guys home with me! I spoke to so many upper crew members, even the captain multiple times and I was very impressed by each and every one of them. They were very honest about the ship itself but said there were many factors about the old ship that carnival could not redesign or make better staying in budget and working with what they had. They felt this was about as good as it could get and were unsure if the Radiance would be changed much from this exact design. To me food is the same as most other cruises, as I eat a special diet. The wait staff was excellent in navigating my families needs but we never once saw the matre Di or the chef which I thought was odd but did not take away from my dinning experiences. My one off topic rant about this cruise and carnival in general is - What type of passenger is Carnival trying to target on their ship. This cruise in particular was a very rough crowd. Fights, threatening young kids roaming the ship, loud cursing and lewd language in common areas - the list goes on. I was personally threatened foolishly by a woman that her husband was coming to take care of me which made for a nice way to spend a day at sea talking to security and writing a report to try to feel safe on a vacation! There were multiple people walking around with speakers blasting loud vulgar and inappropriate music and would not listen to staff when asked to turn it down. Their party actually taunted security when when they said they would confiscate the speaker -which they didn’t actually do. Teens were playing running-tag on the floors at 2am. Others broke people’s personal belongings (arrested upon debarkation) and there was an incident of a man with a cane that kids were kicking the cane to make him fall. Security seems to be unable to do anything about this - which I understand given the way things could escalate on a ship but if you ban people who act this way for future cruises —-the message will go out that this may be the last cruise they will ever be on and all guests need to behave. I have noticed this kind of behavior escalating year after year on my summer cruises out of NY and I cannot understand it and personally don’t want to tolerate anymore. In summary I will say - I would cruise this ship again if and only if it was the final option I had or the price was significantly better than something else. I have now taken 14 cruises on carnival, 3 on Norwegian, 2 on Royal and 1 on celebrity. In the last 6 summers I have cruised carnival 8 times. I enjoy cruise vacations and will continue to book, but next summer I will probably not be going on the Sunrise or Radiance. I have cruises and given carnival ample opportunity to improve the atmosphere but won’t vacation in such a rough environment where myself and my family members don’ t quite feel safe walking back to their cabins alone. There are many other ships sailing out of NY and believe the prices are pretty competitive between the cruise lines at the end of day. I believe people want more value and a better ship experience for their money and I believe I can find that on other cruise lines. I would still travel Carnival in the future as it was my first cruise love but they will have to earn me back as a Carnival loyalist which I am sadly no longer. Carnival should be doing it better than the product I currently see. If this is what the future holds and I believe they will make these “Sunshine” changes on all conquest ships and add many more passengers that these ships simply cannot handle - they will be setting themselves up as not a value based company but a bottom level Cruise company. There is lots of partying on Norwegian and Royal and I am not sure that the ‘fun ship’ mentality will be enough to maintain their faithful with their aging ships being inferior in general to the other major cruise lines. I have been very blunt but honest in what I have said above. I am sure people will disagree and I hope that people never have to or never will experience a cruise where at time they did not feel safe. I also know this is one experience and it’s a summer cruise with more kids and families and even more people, but I also cruise with my family so I cannot necessarily change my timing to avoid the larger crowds and families. I can only assume the next two months of cruising out of NY will be different as the the cliental might change but it doesn’t change the challenges of the physical ship and it’s sister ship which will be here next year at the time. Last note I will end with - they still are giving straws out at the bars!!
  6. We've done lots of Chef's Tables on many different ships, I would make the following observations: - Do not pay full price - they will always offer discounts and you should ask upfront. If they say no the first time ask again a few days later. - If you are doing it to experience food better than speciality restaurants - and definitely better than MDR - it's worth it. If you have done 'real' chef's tables onland, it isn't quite the same experience. The Chef works to a script and with a menu dictated by the company - but it's still several notches above the MDR menu -If you're doing it for the wine they will match wines well to complement the dishes, but don't expect great wine. - I would take a look at where it's located. Radiance class has the best locations, with a dedicated dining room. Vision class have a strange area built into the MDR but at least it's a separate room. On Explorer they had a section of Chops curtained off - not good and wouldn't do it again and wouldn't like the tables in Coastal Kitchen/upstairs in Diamond lounge on some of the Oasis class. If you're paying extra for a Chef's table experience it shouldn't be in a section of another room IMHO
  7. We just finished our first Alaskan cruise, we being my wife and I, both Floridians and both flirting with middle age. We did the Aug 9 NB on Radiance of the Seas with 2 days pre cruise in Vancouver and 3 days post cruise in Denali, all on our own. In Vancouver we did a guided tour of Victoria and post cruise we rented a car in Anchorage and drove to Denali where we stayed for 3 days. All I can say is wow, what an amazing trip, Alaska is a special place to say the least. I'm a pretty busy guy who doesn't have much time to sit behind this laptop with details that has already probably been covered on this site so I figured I will try to keep this to pics only with minimal words. Over the years I have got some good advice from this site, one being to buy a good camera for Alaska and learn to use it, so about 5 months before our sail date I bought the Panasonic Lumix FZ-1000 and it did not disappoint. Along with the FZ-1000 some of the pics are from a iPhone 10s which are pretty good as well. Here goes.....
  8. Getting a head start on the trip report. Our cruise planning report can be found at... DW and I are retired and have only cruised a few times in the Caribbean and this is DWs 1st time in Alaska. We're doing a DIY 8 day pre-cruise prior to ship boarding in Seward.
  9. The one and only time we've done it so far was on our recent Radiance cruise. We waited till we got onboard to book and ended up w/ a substantial discount. If you go, I'd recommend waiting to book, and asking upfront for a discount. Unlikely they'll offer one. Our experience was fabulous - it was held in a private room, unlike other ships I've heard about that cordon off a section of the MDR. The chef and sommelier spent a good deal of time explaining the selections, and food/wine/service was first rate. We are considering doing it again on some of our upcoming cruises, hoping to repeat our wonderful first experience!
  10. In recent years Freedom and Adventure went through quite a few changes and I found the "All things" threads very helpful in keeping up with changes and current conditions on these two fine ships. Now we me going on Jewel for the 3rd time, 1st since 2014, I thought this might be a good time to start that type of thread for this ship. Hopefully it will be around for awhile and people will benefit. (If I'm wrong and this thread exists, boy will I hear about it and be embarassed. This is the first time I saw the ship in Tampa. I was on her again in 2014 and I think at that time she was the only Radiance class ship that still have the Seaview Cafe in the back of the ship. I think she has been revitalized since then and that is gone? I haven't looked at the deck maps to see what is there now. This was also the last ship I was on that had CRT televisions. Have those been replaced? I like the ships position/course channel and its hard to see on those old TVs. Here is to the next 270 days of waiting.
  11. We will be staying in a grand suite on Radiance of the Seas, our first time in a grand suite. I know that we can go to the concierge lounge for drinks and snacks at night. I looked at the RC perks site but didn't find an answer to my questions below. Do we get unlimited bottled water and specialty coffee? Or do we need to buy a drink package? Do we get VOOM for free or discounted? Or do we need to buy a package? thanks

  13. I will be on a Radiance of the Seas cruise in February that is scheduled to arrive in Fremantle (Perth) at 6:30 a.m. I want to take a ferry to Rottnest Island that leaves at 8 a.m. I am doing a B2B cruise so I will not have any luggage to deal with. Has anyone else done this before? If so, will I have any difficulty catching the 8 a.m. ferry?
  14. In no particular order - 😉 My wonderful husband, Jim, is a Royal Caribbean - Radiance Class Man. Aft Facing Balcony Cabins only. I have tried to tempt him with sweet-Suite deals but if no aft facing I’m met with ........ silence. in January I called him in a panic at work. hANG UP, CALL CELEBRITY AND BOOK 9164. Don’t ask questions. Just do it. He asked questions, of course, but he finally booked it with our friend Lou along too. here is the good, bad and ugly. Good far exceeds the other. 9164 - Handicapped Accessible Aft Facing Aqua Class Cabin. During her refit this cabin changed to Aqua Class from Concierge and 2 pax instead of 3. Ypon entry you are drawn in by the soothing color palate - much more attractive than photographed. I DO wonder how all these light colors will last on a busy cruise ship. right now ..... She is stunning. Bathroom to the right. You can hold your daughters sweet 16 party in here. There are grab bars - good for rolling seas. Standard cruise toilet with much room next to it to squeeze in your wheelchair. Toilet to the left, shower chair to the right. Shower is a long rectangle, shower seat at opposite end from shower controls. (Shower seat is slippery - just sit on a hand towel). There are bottles of Shampoo, conditioner and body wash which I used - satisfactory. There is not much space for shower products YOU brought. Desalinated water leaves your hair soft and fluffy and skin soft too. Yummy! Sink with a few small shelves is open below to roll in a wheelchair and mirror angles down which is a nice touch. Sparse counter top - not much extra room. oh yes, even in a rolling sea the water magically stays in the shower .... without a sill. Bathroom - big 👍 Bed - We asked our cabin attendant for extra pillows. Hahahahaha! We got FOUR big fluffy pillows (total of 8 on the bed) and a long body pillow. At night there were pillows flying everywhere! Mattress comfortable. I like mine more soft - go figure. Im a 5’1” wee short lady with 3 surgeries between 2 legs after the accident. I no longer launch well. Next trip I’m taking a foldable 4” step to help me into bed. Fits in my large bag perfectly. 2 small bedside tables with a drawer and shelves. Lights attached to tables. Round shade is glary (is that a word?). We solved the problem by putting our hats on the globes. They must be LED’s because the globes were cool to the touch. LEAVE YOUR POWER STRIP AT HOME. You have power plugs at the desk and in lamps on each side of the bed. Next to the bed is a 1 1/2 person sofa. Something in that sofa. Every time I sat on it, I fell asleep. Other side of room. The half-desk gets it half-right. I was never in sink with it. Just make it a standard depth and deal with it. More plugs here, light switches, a few shelves. We were not comfortable leaving much on the shelves at sea. I roll around and things would be flying. Next time the guards a little higher, please. Thanks. Round mirror and light - beautiful. It’s a shame it doesn’t have a night-light level. Actually there are NO night lights in the cabin. We left the bathroom light on. Next time I’ll bring a night light. we moved the 2 chairs next to the desk. Scooter fit in here perfectly. Ok, I apologize. I don’t have much good to say about the cabinetry. Ready? Here goes. cabinetry Materials look inexpensive....and the ARE. Smoked glass front cabinets. WHY? Jim put his folded polo shirts in one side....already looked messy. Rather than me straightening them all week, he just used some of the abundance of drawers. Woefully little usable hanging space. I came with multiple sundresses. There was not enough room for my dresses and Jim’s dinner shirts. Unsatisfactory. Lots Of good drawers 😋 taking up hanging space😡. i got a hanging shoe organizer to get the shoes up off the floor. Absolutely no space for shoes. Finally ...... The doors were awful at sea; banging and creaking. We used my Marine Tape (created for outside use-doesn’t breakdown in the sun.). It’s removable. We taped the HECK out of these doors to keep them quiet. Balcony Gagunda Not quiet - noise from bar above can be troublesome if you are a light sleeper. Looks like the deck was replaced. It looks beautiful. Views - stunning i was not really well enough to get the most from this lovely ship and destination. My newest medication basically put me to sleep. I actually slept through dinner once. My review of the cabin may be more fussy than most but I spent a great deal of time there. I’m lucky it was such a nice cabin.
  15. Having done Radiance a few years ago I completely agree to get a balcony, but also plan on being up top to get other views. We did a northbound out of Vancouver and enjoyed the build up but we also did a land tour after the cruise and while I understand what people say about relaxing on the cruise after the land tour it doesn't make that much of a difference. In my opinion, the most important thing was doing a land tour. If I was going all the way to Alaska I wanted to see more than just the coast. Our 2 days in Denali were absolutely amazing!! I actually most regret not doing a longer land portion. Whatever you decide though, I know you'll love it!
  16. Sorry it took me so long to get the Radiance block out. We had 8 suitcases to unpack & a month of mail. The Radiance is in the original box. Is the Mariner in the box? Much safer when shipping. How can we exchange addresses off this site?

  20. We've sailed RCCL to Alaska. Looking for a smaller ship experience. Convince me that the almost triple cost of Regent is worth it compared to when we sailed on Radiance of the Sea, where we had a fantastic time. What are the biggest positives of sailing with Regent?
  21. I've seen that on other Radiance/Voyager/Freedom class ships too.
  22. Anthem Blocks I have many Anthem blocks since we haven't been flying. I have duplicates of Explorer and Jewel. Also of Radiance however I believe John & LaLa are trading me a Mariner for my extra Radiance. With that said, I need: Harmony Legend Monarch Sovereign Splendor Symphony Voyager. Does anyone have duplicates of the list above that wants an Anthem, Explorer or Jewel. Please let me know.
  23. Considering doing consecutive cruises (Northbound and Southbound Alaska) in this OS. Is balcony large enough? Is balcony private? Is there a better cabin choice on OS category?
