  2. Preface/Warning My trip reviews tend to be very long-winded and I’m writing this one as much for myself, to help capture the memories, as for CC readers. Therefore, some parts will undoubtedly be uninteresting to the general public. I’m also including photos for the first time and will likely post way too many. Hopefully, there will be enough info and interesting stories for everyone to make up for the more personal aspects. But if it’s too long or you find it uninteresting, oh well, my feelings won’t be hurt. Background My wife and I are both 40 and had cruised eight times since our honeymoon cruise back in 2002 (which was my first but my wife had cruised several times growing up), all on Royal, and all on Voyager class and above 7-night Caribbean cruises outside of one 4-night Bahamas cruise on Enchantment when we were sitting on 76 points and wanted to get to Diamond. So while we definitely know the ins and outs of cruising with RCI, Radiance and Alaska were very much new to us. This trip was entirely my wife’s idea and, as such, she did 95% of the planning and deserves 100% of the credit for taking me on an adventure on which I never even knew I wanted to go. As I’ve told her several times already, I can’t thank her enough for giving me a gift I had no idea I wanted. We rationalized it as a joint 40th birthday celebration but she came up with the idea a long time ago and got serious about it before our Caribbean cruise last June so that’s when we booked it onboard Oasis to take advantage of some NextCruise perks before they were scheduled to change on July 1st of that year. The fact that we both turned 40 between then and Alaska was more of a coincidence. The original version included a 6-day pre-tour through RCI but as my wife did more and more research she decided six days wasn’t long enough and RCI didn’t offer the flexibility that a DIY would. She’s way more adventurous than I am so even though I had no argument with her opinion, the structure and organization of going through RCI appealed to me. I only made peace with the DIY version after she found an outside company that was willing and able to help plan and book our entire trip from hotel rooms (several at properties they own) to train tickets to excursions. Our consultant, Sharilyn, could not have been nicer or more helpful with every aspect of our trip. The number of questions she answered via e-mail or phone had to extend well into the triple digits. Each new version of our itinerary came with a number attached and the final one was #58. She was even happy to give advice regarding the smaller things like restaurants. Of course she was doing her job and some sort of commission factors into her paycheck but we could quickly tell that she genuinely wanted to help create the best experience for us that she possibly could. My wife has even been in contact with her a few times since our trip ended. Our final itinerary was as follows: Two nights in Fairbanks at Pike’s Waterfront Lodge, three nights in Denali (two at the back of the park at the Denali Backcountry Lodge and one at the Denali Cabins closer to the front), one night in Anchorage at the Downtown Clarion Suites, two nights in Girdwood at the Alyeska Resort, and finally two nights in Seward at the Seward Windsong Lodge before boarding Radiance Southbound with stops at Hubbard Glacier, Juneau, Skagway, Icy Straight Point, Ketchikan, and finally Vancouver. On to the review…

  4. We are going to be arriving in Seward, Alaska on the Radiance on 6/21 and I'm looking at ground transportation options. The earliest, and most reasonably priced that I've found leaves the port in Seward for the Anchorage Airport at 8:00 a.m. Their website says they do this every day and that we will have no problem getting off the ship and to their bus by 8:00, but that makes me a little nervous, especially since they don't appear to have a later bus. The company is Alaska Cruise Transportation. Can anyone familiar with the debarkation process in Seward advise if it is reasonable to arrange ground transport for 8:00? Thanks in advance!
  5. Anyone already booked? So far we have two cruises booked for 2021 The Carnival Elation on January 9th and the brand NEW Carnival RADIANCE for February 13th.
  6. Hey everyone... it's been a while! But I'm back, and ready for another review. I have been waiting for this sailing with anticipation more so than any other sailing since Quantum's first ever Caribbean sailing Dec 1, 2014. In fact, I had Anthem booked 3 years ago and had to move my deposit over to another ship as the timing did not work for me, and never re-booked Anthem. I've been yearning to get on another Quantum Class sailing as I really loved Quantum. I shared my Quantum review above with my roll call as many cruisers on this sailing have never been on a Q Class ship. That first photo is epic! Hardly anyone has been on the front bow area of the ship since Quantum, not even on Anthem. And now with the All Access Tour scaled down in half, it's no longer offered. If you've never been on Q CLass and would like a trip down memory lane, have a look at Quantum above. Back to Ovation and Alaska... I've been party to many "Q Class in Alaska" threads over the last 5 years here in CC. I was a HUGE fan since day one that a Q Class ship would be a great hit and best seller for Alaskan itineraries. I just couldn't believe it when they sent a totally inner focused ship with a fully exposed top deck (in Alaskan weather) the Explorer to the Pacific Northwest. Totally stupid in my opinion. But alas, 5 years in the making and Ovation is finally here... in my own home town no less! Vancouver is beautiful and consistently voted in the top 20 cities to visit and/or live in in the world. Those cruisers who are too lazy to hang around a day pre or post cruise are doing themselves an injustice. Above you see the downtown core of Vancouver, with Canada Place Pier in the lower right (the "Sails"). To get their, Ovation has to transit under the Lion's Gate Bridge through a small pass in the upper right before reaching open ocean. The bridge is 198 feet mid span... Q Class is 198 feet tall on a good day. Uhm.... ok.... so there's an issue here. Above is the 178 foot tall Radiance going under the bridge with only 20 feet clearance. So how will Ovation get under?? Well, the current Transpacific from Hawaii will be arriving early to Vancouver the night before debarkation at 8pm in order to get the lowest tide level possible. Not only that, I suspect we'll witness the rare event of the funnels being retracted. And even with all that, there's supposedly about a 5 foot clearance of the Lion's Gate Bridge. I've also been involved in many Panama Canal threads regarding size of ships, and which ships may or may not pass under the Bridge of Americas on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal... this sailing re-enforces the best answers given by BillH48 and ChengP on those threads, that likely only perfect conditions would allow for a Q Class ship to get under the BoA as it is a sister bridge with same span height as the Lion's Gate. We are currently experiencing summer weather this week in Vancouver. Today it was 25 degree Celcius/about 75 degrees F. On Sunday and Monday it cools a bit to 65F/18C... still great weather for a beautiful sail-in and sail-away from the port of Vancouver. If anyone is around Stanley Park on Monday night, they should definitely get to a view point somewhere to watch the ship leave. According to slack tide charts found by AlanF on our role call (Thx Alan!) we are estimating Ovation to leave Canada Place around 6:45-7 and get to the bridge somewhere between 7:10-7:30 to hit that low tide. So why this itinerary? It's one of a kind and is not being repeated. 4 port stops, 2 glacier viewings, and basically (for me anyways) a round trip Vancouver-to-Seattle sailing which is a simple bus trip back up from Seattle when the cruise is finished. The itinerary is outstanding with a ton of extended time at the ports. Date Port Arrive Depart Monday, May 13 Vancouver, BC, Canada 5:00pm Tuesday, May 14 At Sea Wednesday, May 15 At Sea Thursday, May 16 Icy Strait Point, AK 9:00am 8:00pm Friday, May 17 Sitka, AK 7:00am 6:00pm Saturday, May 18 Hubbard Glacier, AK (Cruising) Sunday, May 19 Juneau, AK 7:00am 9:00pm Monday, May 20 Skagway, AK 7:00am 8:30pm Tuesday, May 21 Endicott Arm, AK (Cruising) Wednesday, May 22 At Sea Thursday, May 23 At Sea Friday, May 24 Seattle, WA 6:00am I'll have VOOM on this cruise, so we'll see the O3b satellite network works for Alaska, especially for all the negative internet reviews on radiance the last few years. I have a few more posts to add before cruise day on Monday. This is going to be an AWESOME cruise! 😁
  7. We just disembarked from Radiance last week. The CD was Susan Adams. According to Susan she will remain on Radiance until June and then Cuddy will return to Radiance as CD.
  8. I just checked the Carnival website for our May 30, 2020 cruise and it will not come up. We still had some family wanting to book. Do you think it could be sold out so soon.
  9. I think as of Oasis Class RCCL made sure already while designing and building the ship to add as many cabins as technically possible, hence we will not see a significant amount of cabins added if at all in the future on Oasis, Quantum and any new ship class after construction. The Voyager, Freedom and Radiance class of ships were designed in the 1990's and since margins were higher then the space was calculated more generously and therefore these ships also various available spaces free to add cabins. This also explains when crusing on a full Voyager class ship during school holidays why the ship feels completely over crowded since the added cabins do not absorb the public spaces such as Windjammer or MDR since these were constructed or several 100 less passengers.
  10. TYI! We are going on the Radiance of the Seas in 25 days, we have MTD and do you have to make advance reservations for dinner each night?
  11. We are going to be arriving in Seward, Alaska on the Radiance on 6/21 and I'm looking at ground transportation options. The earliest, and most reasonably priced that I've found leaves the port in Seward for the Anchorage Airport at 8:00 a.m. Their website says they do this every day and that we will have no problem getting off the ship and to their bus by 8:00, but that makes me a little nervous, especially since they don't appear to have a later bus and on our last cruise it took FOREVER to get off the ship. The company is Alaska Cruise Transportation. Can anyone familiar with the debarkation process in Seward advise if it is reasonable to arrange ground transport for 8:00? Thanks in advance!
  12. If you look back at the last report, you will see that the Radiance changed captains about 2 months ago, so we are coming up on the "standard" window of 10 weeks. Even if no other information is available, that's a good first guess that they'll be switching back soon. "Radiance OTS - Capt Espen Been (started rotation 3-23-19) Radiance OTS - Capt Marek Slaby" Theron
  13. Which ship are you on or looking at? Only some of the ships with the Cloud 9 spa experience offer a true thalassotherapy pool with the spa pass or booking of a spa cabin. The others like the Vista, Horizon, and Panorama just have a private use for pass holders hot tub. And converted ships like the Sunshine, Sunrise, and soon to be Radiance do not have any spa pass exclusive pool or hot tub at all.
  14. I do a mock booking a few days a week. We booked in January 2019 for a June 2020 cruise to Alaska on Radiance. 3ppl (2 adults-1child) OV= $3,000 (with insurance-$137) The price has NEVER gone down once. Our travel agent said it's a good thing you booked early. We got a good price. It's up $750-800 on average weekly. Balcony....sheesh but I am thankful for an OV. Bucket list cruise! I know it's the whole supply and demand but I hate to think what the cost will be late summer for this cruise and even further on down the line.
  15. Well that makes sense. Wonder who'll replace Susan on Radiance.
  16. Hi all! I’ve just booked Pride of America for July 2021 for the first part of my birthday trip (I will go to Disney’s Aulani for a few days after) to celebrate my 50th birthday! I’m in an ocean view cabin with the beverage package and the shore excursion credit as my perks. I’ve cruised Royal (3 of the Radiance class ships), HAL (once to Alaska), fathom (to Cuba and then Cuba/DR when it existed), and mostly Disney (all their ships), so I’m not new to cruising, but I’m new to Norwegian. I’m also gluten-free due to a wheat allergy. What tips do you have for a new NCL cruiser? Thanks!
  17. the going, going gone sale had some interior cabins for 799 interior, 899 oceanview for 7/19/19 and 599 for interior and 699 for 8/2 both on the Radiance! Sometimes it pays to wait until a few months before
  18. Updated 5/24/19 --- My hope is to put update this thread every few days or at least once week. To do that, I need cruisers (or others that somehow have 'insider information') to let me know who they come across on sailings. HAPPY CRUISING! What Activity Manager have you come across? Post the name, ship and sailing date to help keep this thread as accurate as possible. ****Adventure OTS – Cian MacCormaic (pronounced Key-in) is on board as per as cruiser on the sailing during the week of 3/14. 20. Almost all Oasis class listings this week (none of which are real deals), but the Radiance 8/2 sailing has some good pricing. Biker, who doesn't know what happened to the usual GGG thread and his search skills are failing him.
  21. Hi David, Please add us Radiance of the Seas Vancouver to Vancouver (Alaska) 4 nights Sept 6th 2019, Vancouver to Honolulu, 10 nights, 10th Sept, 2019, Honolulu to Syd 19 nights, 20th Sept 2019. Many thanks Lee & Scott
  22. I would pick the Radiance as well .Not only would you get two more days at sea, but you would avoid Portofino, which is so touristy and expensive. There is a free bus from the ship to the city in Marseilles, so you could do a cheap day there, or book a day trip to Avignon. Palma is also very pretty, and Palermo offers a lot of interesting excursions. Plus, the Radiance is newer and will likely be cleaner and have more bells and whistles. Hope you make the change!
  23. Gutting the old Victory and turning it into the NEW Radiance. We are booked on it for February 2021. First-ever Big Chicken restaurant at sea, serving up favorites from Shaq, Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer and huge fried chicken fan! It is to be open very long hours including all day breakfast. several different chicken offerings. Hopefully it turns out great and will be put on other ships. it is complementary.
  24. I assume you know Radiance is not “brand new”. It is currently sailing as Victory, which will be renamed Radiance after a significant makeover next year.
  25. We will be happy when Blu decides...either way. in answer to your “move down a deck or two” ....... One reason we grabbed this particular sailing was for the Deck 9 location. We enjoy Radiance Class Ships and stay in Aft Facing Cabins one Deck down from the Windjammer. Jim often runs up to the Jammer for treats for us. Faster than room service and better assortment. One deck away is more convenient for Jim. we can stay in any aft facing balcony on The 4 Radiance Class Ships. Doors are big enough for the scooter or wheelchair Floor area in Royal Cabins is jinormous compared to Summit. I can drive in a rental scooter, turn it around and park next to the sofa leaving lots of room to walk around. We bring a shower stool to assemble for the shower. We like the location on deck 9 and booked accordingly. Moving down would be a downgrade. we do not really care about Aqua Class.
