  1. Hello fellow cruisers! We recently returned from a 7-night voyage on the Nieuw Statendam, and I thought I would try and write a little photo review to share with you! Just testing this photo...More to come!
  2. Amsterdam will be in prime viewing area (where I can gaze at "my deck") at the AS dock from 0800-2200. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. The only other ship in port is Regatta at the AJ dock from 1200-2300. The forecast calls for rain early in the day with overcast skies later on. High will be 64F/18C and low will be 54F/12C. Sunrise is at 4:22 am and sunset at 9:45 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam on Monday.
  3. Still working on our review of our first trip on HAL, but wanted to share a link to pictures of MDR menus and food here. I know food is subjective, but we really enjoyed most of our meals.
  4. We were on NA in April of 2017, and the casino was non-smoking after renovations to the piano bar area across the way... I had assumed it would remain non-smoking, but the HAL website - supposedly updated to June 2019 - does NOT list Nieuw Amsterdam as one of the completely non-smoking casinos. Can someone who has sailed recently tell me whether HAL has reverted to smoking in the NA casino? Our booking depends on the answer... Many thanks!
  5. We will be sailing on the Amsterdam on a 7 day Alaskan voyage next Monday. I will be attempting to provide daily blog updates, take photos, and answer questions any of you may have. Please post here or on my blog. https://cruisingrobsblog.blogspot.com/search/label/ms amsterdam
  6. Hello, Does HAL usually have any kind of Halloween night party or event on Nieuw Amsterdam? We will be sailing on 10/31/19 and am wondering if we should bring even the simplest of costumes to make it more festive. Thanks!
  7. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215 and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. Weather is back to normal in Juneau - rain is predicted for each day this week - there is even a flood warning for part of Monday. The high temperature will be 65F/18C and the low 54F/12C. Sunrise is at 4:15 am and sunset at 9:51 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  8. Just returned form a 1-week Alaska cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam. As always, we enjoyed our cruise very much. The Alaska cruise was our 3rd time on the Nieuw Amsterdam (all Alaska cruises). The one thing that did bother me was the room smelled a little stuffy and the duvet had quite a few stains on it when I look at the bedding. Does anyone know if HAL will be modernizing the bedding some time in the near future?
  9. We are sailing Oct 29 and have veranda cabin 6114 which is by the elevator. Has anyone had a problem with traffic on this area?
  10. Anyone else sailing on NS for the New Year Eve cruise -Dec 29? I didn't see a roll call for it. Our first time on HAL, have sailed many other cruise lines. Wondering if they will do something special for New Years Eve?
  11. Good morning, all! We are sailing on the Nieuw Statendam at the end of this month. We've cruised on a number of the HAL larger ships, but never on the largest Pinnacle class. We were just notified that there is an embarkation schedule that starts at the top deck and works down (Neptunes and 4&5* at any time, of course). Since we're on the Beethoven Deck (4) they want us to arrive at 3:30 for a 5:00 sailing. That seems really, really late to me. We usually like to board between noon and 1pm. Has anyone gone through this embarkation procedure, and if so, what was your experience? Thanks in advance -- I appreciate your thoughts.
  12. A full house in Juneau with five cruise ships on Monday. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Seabourn Sojourn tendering from 0700-2300, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The first half of the week has nice weather forecast (the end of the week is looking rainy). Monday is supposed to be partly cloudy with a high of 78F/26C and a low of 58F/14C. Sunrise is at 4:05 am and sunset at 10:00 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  13. Quick question......I called Holland direct and received two different answers. We booked the Nieuw Statendam room 7107 balcony room. I know the balcony is larger. I can see from the deck plan it's true. Well another agent said the room was also a bit larger than a regular balcony room. Was wonder if anyone can confirm. The 1st agent said the room was NOT larger. Not sure who to believe. Thanks!
  14. After reading so many threads, I've now lost the thread where it discussed the hidden spots (gems) on Nieuw Amsterdam to lounge outside and inside as well as hidden gems of treats. For example, I remember reading a post about emergency exit doors that are not really emergency exit doors and take you to a quieter outdoor deck area. Or one that stated how to get to the Crows Nest. Also, any other hidden gems like the Tea Time (that too looked fun). Thanks!
  15. Does anyone have recent experiences in the hair salon on the Amsterdam to share? How are they at hair-cutting, color, highlights, anything you've had done? Prices? Recommended stylist?
  16. It's nice to have two HAL ships in port but, unfortunately, we will only get glimpses of them because of their docks. Westerdam will be at the CT dock from 0800-1800 and Amsterdam at the FKL dock from 1400-2300. Also in port are Norwegian Jewel at the AJ dock from 0700-1315 and Eclipse at the AS dock from 0730-2000. The forecast is for "considerable cloudiness with occasional showers" (60% chance of rain). High will be 65F/18C and the low 55F/13C. Sunrise is at 4:09 am and sunset at 9:57 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Volendam on Friday.
  17. Earlier today I decided to see if I could find a more recent picture to see what Our beloved Nieuw Amsterdam III looks like as she is being scrapped. Se was our firs HAL ship back in December, 1988. We were on board for her 12 day Christmas Cruise when we did the partial canal transit on Christmas day with the Rotterdam V. We have been at sea for the Holidays every year ever since. I am actually currently working on digitizing the pictures from that cruise by using a negative scanner to scan the negatives and then some photo editing software to clean them up as much as I can. Yes I still have the negatives for the cruises we have done till going digital in 2004. When I found this picture I was speechless and thought about all the memories from the time we cruised on her. Till this day we have more days on her than any of the other Dam Ships we have been on at a total of 107 days (9 cruises) but our days on Nieuw Amsterdam IV are #2 (96 days & 13 cruises) so the next time we can get on her will hopefully be enough to take over the top spot for us.
  18. We will be staying in one of the rooms w/ an un-renovated bath and it appears they still have the wall mounted hoover style hairdryers. Do all cabins also have a handheld for use at desk, or only ones with renovated baths where the hoover style hairdryers have been removed? Me Mum does not want to bring her normal hairdryer if she doesn't need to for bag weight purposes - it is a rather large and heavy salon/professional grade handheld.
  19. 🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂🎂
  20. Cannot find much information on Tamarind on the Nieuw Statendam. When the ship came out, Tamarind was supposed to have an outdoor eating area overlooking the Sea View pool area. Has anyone actually experienced this and how enjoyable (or not) was it?
  21. A busy start for the month of July with five ships in port. Eurodam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2300 and Nieuw Amsterdam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Viking Orion tendering from 0800-1630, Ruby Princess at the FKL dock from 1100-2215, and Solstice at the AJ dock from 1330-2200. The nice weather continues and the prediction is that it will last through the week. The afternoon should be mostly sunny with a high of 76F/24C and a low of 55F/13C. Sunrise is at 3:57 am and sunset at 10:06 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Oosterdam on Tuesday.
  22. Our very first cruise was to Alaska in 2014 on the Westerdam. This was our 3rd trip to Alaska and we went back to Holland. It was amazing! I think the passengers can make the cruise fun and we had some really great fellow cruisers. Ages from 20s - 70s but all young at heart and ready for fun. Boarding: was easy. got to the port by 11AM and on board by noon. Room: 7079 Signature Suite. Perfect size and balcony had lots of room with two loungers and table. It was pretty warm the entire trip so we used the balcony a lot. Entertainment: BB King was fantastic. This group had been together for the last 5 months and this was their last week and then a new group was coming. They really got the crowd going and dancing. They do three sessions each night 8:30/ 9:30 and 10:30 with a 15 minute break in between. We got their early for the first show to get a seat and never left. The string quartet was fabulous as well. They were from Russia and really sounded like a recording. Just beautiful We went to one variety show and a dancer was injured due to the rocking of the ship. They ended up cancelling the second show. Two nights were pretty rocky during the week. Spa: I got the salt water spa package with the heated spa lounger. It is $136 on line, but I waited too long and couldn't book before I left. When I went to sign up, they wanted to charge me $215, then after i protested $169 but finally got them to $136. I felt the workers at the spa were a bit snooty and not very helpful. There is also no water available to drink. So be sure to bring your own. Really loved the salt water after a day of touring. Excursions: We did the Tracy Inlet cruise and it was amazing. Rained most of the time, but the views were spectacular. We saw a "herd"? of sea lions and their babies splashing in the water. Must have been about 50 of them. a lot of harbor seals and one whale. Afterwards we we took the tram up Mt. Roberts and had dinner. Food was OK. Views were spectacular. The train/bus tour in Skagway. I messed up and had the bus portion first and then the train coming back. I would do the RT train if I had to do it over. The train has nicer views IMO and much more comfortable than the bus. There is also supposed to be a club car with big plush chairs. I'd look into that option. Ketchikan: We did the Ketchikan Taxi cab tour with Tim White. Went to herring cove which is beautiful and to Potach park to see the Totems. Also went to the Rotary park. Saw lots of eagles. Didn't see any bears this time. Then went to a Jazz club in town. Good times Food: We ate in the main dining room the first night. Then Rudy's on Thursday night. This is the one night special chef deal. It was incredible! The remainder we ate in the buffet. Had the pizza and brought to our balcony. Also had the burger at the Dive In. They were very good as were the french fries. Casino: My husband played the slots. (his addiction) and won $910.00. So I'd say the slots are fairly loose. disembarking: We had an early flight so we did the self walk off. It was easy. Lines were long at customs as there were 4 ships in port. But moved fairly quickly. LOVED this cruise Dawn
  23. Exceedingly smooth. Arrived Canada port 10 am and we moved like a Swiss swatch all the way to the first hold up which was an obligatory line for photos - the photos were not obligatory and we skipped them. Then we sat for a few minutes until we boarded. No line for customs - boarded11 am. Bring global entry card — not just passport as we were told by staff. I had mine but DH did not but no line so was OK.
  24. Greetings....been awhile since we did a guarantee (after an awful experience) but we are seriously considering a long trip to/from San Diego. Our agent has contacted HAL and every cabin in every class is a GTY. We are worried even an EE oceanview could result in us being in the furthest aft reaches of the ship. Any thoughts about the situation (why all GTY, for example) most appreciated.
  25. Anyone able share experience with any of these three cabins above main showroom? Bit worried we could assigned one if we do an “E” guarantee. Many thanks!
