We are slated to cruise on February 7, 2021, on the Nieuw Statendam (fingers crossed) and have some questions about this ship: 1) Does it have Pickleball? 2) I read somewhere that they have outdoor movies -- where do they show these movies? 3) How many gala nights are usually held on a 10 day cruise? I'm sure I'll think of more questions as time goes by. LOL I check the HAL site every day to see if they have changed their target date for resuming cruises...so far, so good for February 7...   4. Hello, I have been looking at a cruse on the Nieuw Statendam for next spring and I am a bit puzzled. What is the difference between a veranda cabin and a vista suite. I see that the veranda has the living area next to the patio and the VS has the bed next to it. Really would like to know what is different before I book. Also if anyone has stayed in a VS what are your thoughts. Thanks

  7. I just booked a Neptune guarantee on the Nieuw Statendam (sister ship to Koningsdam) and was wondering about the 4 Neptune cabins that are far forward on decks 10 and 11. Has anyone stayed in these and if so, how did you like them?
  8. I received an email today. My 14 day Northern Isles cruise on Statendam has been changed from 6-25 to 7-18 2021 and departs from Amsterdam instead of Copenhagen. Looks like many changes for that ship, based on a delay in the launching of the Ryndam. This change works for me, for many reasons. One, more likely I'll have the vaccine by then. Also, they added 250 in OBC for my trouble.
  9. Typed out a long response, and CC decided to delete it just when i hit "post". So typing it out again... bear with me :) To start with, some general comments and then further posts will dive in deeper. As a Deaf passenger with low vision, I wanted to give that perspective as compared to the "regular" perspectives. So feel free to ask questions, share concerns and comments, and I will be glad to address them all. Here we go! First of all - I am Deaf, newly 30, low vision due to Usher Syndrome - combined deafness, vestibular issues, and retinis pigmentosa. American Sign Language (ASL) is my main mode of communication. Ocean liner aficionado, introvert, voracious reader. Writer in the process of penning several projects. I do have bilateral cochlear implants - wore them inside the ship and on shore - but wisely took them off when I went out on deck - I didn't want to risk leaning over the railing and have them accidentally fall off - that'd be $7,000 per sound processor. Yeah... that'd be bad. I do hear everything but I can't always understand what I hear. I hear you all talking, but still need lipreading and / or signs to figure out the context. I do excellently with environmental sounds (ship whistles and alarms, for instance - hear them perfectly and can figure out which code the blasts stands for) and music (Adagio!) Plus I had Bear, my longtime companion who's the same age as I and has been to half of the states in the US and many national parks. So it only made sense to drag him along for the ride - and to get intel for a future book I'm writing. (Visit his Instagram page at www.instagram.com/kaitlynandbear ). Quite a few pictures from our shipboard experience there! "You're a bit young - why HAL?" Ocean liner aficionado here. I prefer ships that still look and act like ships - dark color hull, white superstructure, funnels, a wraparound teak promenade deck - which is required - with traditional deck chairs, afternoon tea, shuffleboard, and fixed dinnertime. I am not one for the "foo-foos" of on-land resorts that carries over to ships making them look and act less like ships (*eyes RC, NCL and Carnival*). I have sailed before on Carnival and found it too "busy" for me (sensitive to light, sound, crowds, and visual distractions). So that left Cunard and HAL as my choices (though I would make an exception for Disney - they do honor the old days with their decor and ship profile). I'm perfectly happy with a old fashioned deck chair on the Promenade Deck with a good book and the occasional game of shuffleboard. Can't afford Cunard at this point, and HAL plus the Panama Canal were on my bucket list - so glad to be able to cross two of them off! Also, this trip was a replacement trip for my cancelled European tour last summer. The trip was set up with a Deaf agency and pulled at the last minute due to low sign-ups. ALL hearing land tours won't provide interpreters (falls outside ADA jurisdiction) and the "disability-friendly" tours generally don't accommodate Deaf well due to communication barriers instead of physical barriers. So that left cruising as an option. The Panama Canal worked well due to the fact that it had 2 US ports, which made it eligible for ADA accommodation - hence the interpreters and in-cabin visual alert system. Did the 16 days Panama Canal crossing on the Nieuw Amsterdam from FLL to San Diego, Apr 9-25. In short, 14 beautiful sunny days and two "North Atlantic" days of overcast and choppy waves. Couldn't ask for better weather! First of all, thanks to HAL for providing an ASL interpreter. However, one interpreter is not enough for such a long cruise - 16 days, and I had to cut back on my requests for interpretation to avoid burnout on the interpreter's part. Also, what happens when the interpreter is incapable of performing his/her duty due to circumstances out of our control? As was the case when the interpreter got food poisoning from the Lido and was out of commission for 36 hours, meaning I had zero access to communication during that time frame. Granted it was on a day where I lucky didn't have any shore excursions planned, but did have the behind-the-scenes ship tour scheduled. (Thankfully the on-board marketing department was able to add another ship tour to accommodate me on a later date when the interpreter recovered, but I still got a shortened tour instead of the full one that I paid for). I would strongly encourage a practice of hiring 2 interpreters instead of one to avoid those issues. Also, I would encourage revisiting the compensation package for the interpreting services, as I had issues finding an interpreter that was willing to work for nothing, especially as competing cruise lines do pay the interpreter for their work (Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Disney, etc).I encouraged HAL to reach out to several agencies and see what the current practice is. If HAL keeps up the practice of not paying interpreters, Deaf guests will be turned away and seek other cruise lines. (This is why HAL got a bad rap within the Deaf community for not being accommodating nor paying the interpreters while expecting them to work full days for free). Moving on, the shipboard staff and crew have been fabulous regarding the communication front. I never had an issue onboard when it came to communicating with the staff/crew. My portable whiteboard and marker came in handy, and the staff/crew were more than happy to write back and forth or use gestures to ensure effective communication occurs. Special note for the waitstaff in the dining room - not only did they recognize me by face, but also remembered what I liked/disliked, and learned a few signs such as "coffee?" and made sure to write down anything they said, even before I pulled out my whiteboard and marker. Ditto with the staff working the Front Desk - I was especially glad when one of them turned out to know enough basic sign to ensure barrier-free communication occurred. Carlos in the Showroom went above and beyond to making sure the interpreter had access to the show scripts, schedule, and rehearsals with the cast. Not only that, they never failed to remember to shine a light on the interpreter during a show - I never had to remind them to do so. Also, I got a special treat when they agreed to shine a light on the interpreter during a showing of "Rogue One" on the big screen after hearing that the in-cabin movie network had issues with the closed captioning. (As a fan of Star Wars, I was tickled to see it on the big screen, and even better, with an interpreter instead of captions for once). That reminds me - contacted the tech department and/or the film distributors to check into the software for the in-cabin movie listings as the closed captioning was wonky at best. Half of the movie would caption properly, the other half, the captions would literally blink on/off so fast that it was impossible to read. (I checked with several films, both in my cabin and several neighboring cabins and they all had the same issues, leading me to believe it was a network issue and not a TV issue). I think the captions had timing issues as my iPad copy of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" captions worked beautifully, and the movie captions didn't match up, especially how long the captions stayed on screen. (Used that movie as I had seen it several times and was very familiar with it - hence a good "control" film to test it with!) I would encourage research and development of a on-board texting app to be used on the ship. I had issues with ordering room service. If my (hearing) companion wasn't in the cabin, I was left with two choices - either walk downstairs to the Ocean Bar (closest public room) and place my order with the bartender who would phone it in (thank you Edgar!), or open my door and hope to catch one of the housekeeping staff working the hall and have them phone it in (thank you to whoever dropped their duty to do that - I regret that I did not catch their name). Having a onboard texting app would have resolved that issue for me and many other guests who can't use the in-cabin phone. It was especially problematic when I became sick one day and could barely dress and drag myself downstairs to Ocean Bar and have them call in tea and soup, and drag myself back upstairs and get back in bed. Also, I would like to thank the shore excursions folks for making it possible for the interpreter to accompany me on those trips - we were especially lucky in Costa Rica (Walk in the Clouds) and Antigua (Past & Present Colonial Antigua) to be blessed with guides that understood the purpose of an ASL interpreter and made sure we were in the front of the bus so the interpreter could hear and replay their spiels and checked in with me to make sure I was getting the info I needed. (Natasha in CR and Erick in Antigua). I do hope HAL continues this practice of sending the interpreter ashore with the Deaf guests at their request. On last thing - I would strongly discourage scheduling three major one-time only events on the same day/time. In doing the make-up ship tour, I missed out on On Deck for a Cause (had the shirt on and was ready) and the second Mariner's lunch. (There were two Mariner's lunches and I was invited to the second one). I was looking forward to doing all three, and unfortunately, the rescheduled ship tour took place at the same time as them. Just a small complaint on my part. (I was able to pick up my tile at a later time). During the trip I filled out at least 15 comment cards with commendations towards particular staff/crew members, expressed several concerns and whatnot. I do hope they were useful, and the staff/crew got their commendations and thank-yous. The ship library had copies of the Harry Potter books - which is VERY GOOD in my books! 50 points to whoever put them on the shelf - no library is complete without a set. (Okay, I confess - I'm still waiting for my belated Hogwarts letter to arrive!) Next post: in-cabin accommodations, embarkation zoo, muster drill, deck life, vestibular issues, mealtimes, excursions, getting sick, riding the elevators for an hour, low-vision issues, etc.

  11. Is the Pinnacle suite shower on the Nieuw Statendam the real small shower like in the pinnacle on the Volendam? The drawing shows it bigger but the only video i can find shows it being one of those round things that are very small.
  12. Does anyone have any idea as to what is in the blank space on Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam between the midship stairs and the Lincoln Center Stage/BB Kings Blues Club? I am considering cabin 1128 on deck 1 right below and wondering if it is noisy from whatever is above? I cannot find any reviews of this room or it's direct neighbor 1124.

  15. Hi everyone! I am contemplating booking an aft facing veranda for an Eastern Caribbean in April. We sailed in one on the Eurodam to the Mexican Riviera in December of 2018. We loved everything about it with one exception. There was a strange vibration that wasn't constant. It would come and go. Is this typical of aft facing verandas, or was there maybe an issue with the ship? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! My other options are one of the angled balconies on either deck 4 (partially obstructed) or deck 8. Thanks in advance!! Chris
  16. These are far forward Vista suites on Deck 6. My understanding is that the balconies wrap from the side around to the front. I'm concerned that perhaps the front section is partitioned and has to be opened / unlocked by the cabin steward. Does anyone know? Thanks.
  17. We have looked and looked for a GOOD photo of the FAMILY Cabana on the Nieuw Statendam. We have heard all the negatives about this cabana, but have seen no actual photos of it, just side views and partial views where you can make nothing out. If anyone has a good clear photo, we would appreciate it if you would post it here.

This is a British TV documovie available on Netflix in Europe which we were watching last night. It is mostly about Dominic Cummins who is Chief Advisor to Boris Johnson. Anyway 66 mins into the movie and what do we spot on a kitchen wall? Yes, Holland America Statendam artwork. Anyone know anything about it?
  19. I had noticed that Nieuw Statendam was 'Scheduled' for arrival into Port Everglades for 7.00 am (ET) on Monday 27th April and it is now 'Confirmed'! She will dock at pier 26 with orientation listed as 'Starboard Must' . (that is a bit unusual?). She is scheduled to sail at 5.00pm ET.   20. Another, now infrequent, dam ship appearance in Ft. Lauderdale/Port Everglades during these uncertain times! HAL's still newest ship, Nieuw Statendam will be making her presence known on Sunday, March 29, 2020 in order to take on fuel, water and some stores, as well as a small bit of crew turnover. She is due in at 0700 hrs local and going to berth 19. Prelim departure is scheduled for 5:00 PM Two others members of the Holland America Group are scheduled to make an appearance; Sky Princess arriving at 0600 hrs. local and assigned berth 26, and her stablemate Regal Princess, arriving at 0630 hrs local, and assigned to berth 02.   21. My wife and I recently disembarked from the above cruise. In short – and to save you the trouble of reading what follows, we will state that the cruise was absolutely wonderful, and we would have to search for any negative points. The Ship. We had reservations about cruising on a ship as large as Nieuw Statendam, having in the past experienced Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, and Zuiderdam. Quite frankly, those concerns were completely unjustified. We simply loved this ship – its décor, cleanliness, “newness,” the extra venues, and the fact that at no time did it seem crowded. Rather, the public spaces seem wider and brighter, and we felt much less confined than on the smaller ships. It will be difficult for us to sail on anything other than a Pinnacle Class ship in the future. Reservations. We used the services of our HAL PCC, and found that she did a creditable and knowledgeable job as have her predecessors with Holland America. We also made various reservations online, and had no trouble doing so. Finally, we dealt with other agents by telephone in reserving a cabana and purchasing an “upsell,” and both were pleasant and patient. Embarkation/Disembarkation. We experienced no trouble with respect to checking in and leaving the ship at the end of the cruise (sad though that was!). The ease with which we did so was undoubtedly aided by our having opted for a Neptune suite. It is also worth noting that we used the Luggage Direct program and found it to be wonderful as has always been the case in the past. Accommodations. We had initially booked a midship veranda cabin, but wasted no time in accepting an upsell to a Neptune when it was offered via email a week or so before the cruise. We opted for one of the two available – an aft cabin with a wraparound balcony. We had enjoyed this cabin location in the past and loved it. Although the ship’s movement was a bit more apparent at this location, the veranda was wonderful, as was the room itself. Club Orange. We initially purchased Club Orange, because we had not used it in the past and wanted to sample it on a Pinnacle-class ship. Fortunately, the cost of Club Orange was deducted from the additional price charged for the Neptune when we opted for the upgrade. In any event, we enjoyed Club Orange thoroughly, although I am not sure that it is truly worth the price. The staff was wonderful, the food was well prepared and beautifully presented, and I enjoyed watching the chef handling the preparation of breakfast and final touches as to dinner. Still, the main dining room has always worked well for us and we will probably not opt for Club Orange in the future unless it is offered along with some other upsell. Lido, etc. We liked the bright appearance and roominess of the Lido, and found the food to be very good for its kind. We always look forward to Dive-In burgers, and ordered those immediately upon boarding the ship. The pizza was also decent. The Reuben from the deli was good, but would have been much better had it been heated. Oddly enough, the same cold Reuben was my very first lunch on Holland America in 2012 – it was cold then too! Sel de Mer. We skipped Pinnacle and Tamarind in favor of a more expensive blowout at Sel de Mer. We have dined there on three prior occasions. The first trip was wonderful, and the second was frankly pretty poor – so much so that we debated whether to spend the money on this trip. We decided to do so, and I am pleased to report that the ambiance, food, and service were all outstanding. Grand Dutch Café. This was a wonderful addition, although we attempted to avoid it whenever possible because of the calories inherent in the dishes offered! Retreat Cabana and Thermal Suite. We purchased both of these amenities before the cruise. The cabana was beautiful, as was the service and willingness to procure drinks and food. I also enjoyed the thermal suite. However, the fact that the cabana was on deck 12 and the thermal suite on deck 9 meant that I didn’t use it as frequently as I had the lido cabanas and thermal suite on the Eurodamand Nieuw Amsterdam. Frankly, the need to travel up and down 3 flights was just not worth the trouble. Although most would disagree, I will also confess to missing the hustle and bustle of the lido cabana on the pool deck. Signature Beverage Package. We do not consume enough beverages to warrant this purchase, but I nonetheless like it because there is no need to worry about unpleasant surprises at the end of the trip when the bar and wine bill is received. While the wine on the SBP is probably not terribly sophisticated, the bourbon selection was excellent, as were the mixed drinks preferred by my wife. Bars. We exclusively patronized the Ocean Bar for pre- and post-dinner cocktails. This was a wonderfully comfortable area, and we enjoyed joking around with the staff as they managed to keep the throng happy headed to and from dinner. Shops. Frankly, we saw little in the shops of interest, beyond buying a couple of Nieuw Statendam commemorative glasses that were on sale. Neptune Lounge. We have used and enjoyed this area in the past, but on this occasion visited only once or twice because of the distance between our cabin and the lounge. We did receive a couple of calls from the concierges in the lounge, which were appreciated. Itinerary/Excursions. We have sailed this itinerary several times in the past, and took no ship’s excursions. Frankly, we preferred the ambience of the ship to any activities onshore, and thus went ashore only at the Amber Cove and ssSt. Thomas stop. Entertainment. We went to virtually nothing on the Main Stage, with the exception of the “Origins,” which I very much enjoyed. The history of Holland America is not only interesting but also important, and I am glad that an effort has made to offer this as a program. Otherwise, we thoroughly enjoyed the Lincoln Stage performances. Overall, this may have been our most enjoyable cruise ever: the ship itself was magnificent, the accommodations wonderful, the food outstanding, and, most importantly, the staff was truly wonderful. We are looking forward to going again. By way of personal information, I will note that my wife and I are in our “early” 70’s, and consider ourselves to be active and still in possession of most of our faculties. Our first Holland America cruise was in 2012 (this same itinerary), and we have cruised at least once annually ever since. With the exception of a circumnavigation of the Hawaiian Islands on another line, we have never been interested in experiencing any other ships or companies. This loyalty on our part has led us to bring along various family members over the years, on one occasion including 14 children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. We are currently three-star mariners, and emerged from this trip only 5 credits shy of attain four-star status. We look forward to attaining that next goal.
  22. Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam was notified at 9:30 a.m. local time in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, that the Florida Governor’s office had supported an order requested by Broward County officials to hold disembarkation of guests from the ship in order to do a COVID-19 test on a guest who sadly passed away during this cruise. The U.S. Coast Guard, in conjunction with the U.S. CDC, had already cleared the ship for disembarkation after reviewing the medical specifics of this case. Approximately 65% of guests have already disembarked based on this clearance and are on their way home. Results are not expected back until late afternoon or early evening today. 871 guests remain on the ship and all hotel services are fully operational and they are able to use their staterooms. We have advised those with flights before this evening to rebook them. We are also looking at options for anyone who may now need overnight accommodations for flights tomorrow, including the option to overnight on the ship. There were no known or suspected cases of COVID-19 on this cruise. Nieuw Statendam just returned from a 7-day Caribbean cruise that departed Ft. Lauderdale, Florida on March 8, 2020.
  23. Another early post. And speaking of early, the ships are scheduled to leave earlier than usual. Something to do with DST maybe???? Nieuw Statendam will be at pier 26 (port to) from 0430-1600. She will be leaving on a 7-day Tropical Caribbean cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (09 Mar 0800-1700); Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos (11 Mar 0800-1700); Amber Cove, Dominican Republic (12 Mar 0800-1700); Key West, Florida (14 Mar 0800-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (15 Mar a0700) Zuiderdam will be at pier 21 (starboard to) from 0515-1600. She will be doing a 10-day Panama Canal Sunfarer cruise. Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (09 Mar 0800-1500); Oranjestad, Aruba (11 Mar 1300-2300); Willemstad, Curacao (12 Mar 0800-1600); Panama Canal (Cruising Canal) (14 Mar 0500-0500); Colon, Panama (14 Mar 1500-2100); Puerto Limon, Costa Rica (15 Mar 0730-1700); Fort Lauderdale, Florida (18 Mar a0700) Also in port are Regal Princess at pier 2 from 0400-1500, Celebrity Edge at pier 25 form 0500-1430, Carnival Magic at pier 4 from 0300-1500, and Adventure OTS at pier 18 from 0415-1630.   25. We are just off a one week cruise (3/9) on the Nieuw Statendam. I wanted to write a little bit about sanitation onboard in light of the ongoing Corona Virus situation. I was disappointed and I think Holland America needs to step up its game if it is going to stay in business. THE GOOD: - Hand santizing stations are abundant and filled; - Bathrooms are equipped to allow exit without touching door handles after hand washing (paper towel and garbage adjacent to entrance) - Spray sanitizer encouraged by staff for passengers returning to boat and at first three nights of dinner service THE BAD: - Our room stewards did not use gloves when cleaning room, touching surfaces in room or changing linens. Current best practices would require a fresh pair of gloves at each new room and washing/sanitizing between rooms. - The buffet at half-moon cay had an open buffet with open service. The handles for the salads and accompaniments were being touched by tens if not hundreds of passengers enjoying the buffet. - Dining room stopped offering spray sanitizer after third night. Also, we witnessed multiple people refusing the sanitizer when it was offered and being allowed to proceed in. - Dining staff touching surfaces (table tops, playing card tricks with guests, etc.) and then serving food. - Cruise staff hugging passengers. I realize this is a nice touch, but it's time for social distancing and it would be best modeled by these team members. The reality is that the spread of this virus is only as strong as its weakest link and there are some weak links on Holland America. It's just a matter of time before a crew member or passenger is infected and the spread becomes overwhelming in part because of these lax practices. Just my two cents worth, others may disagree.
