  1. In the mail today I received a promotion booklet from HAL for holiday cruises that talks about a musical group "Postmodern Jukebox On Deck" and states they are currently on the Rotterdam. It stated that "they are bringing the excitement and glamour of their show to sea with two unique performances created exclusively for HAL". Just wondering if anyone has witnessed these shows and what you thought. We will be on the Rotterdam in October so they may have moved on by then.
  2. Hi .. has anyone been on the Rotterdam recently that could confirm it the ship has been through the Dry Dock and had the refurbishment that is being currently undertaken? And if not does anyone know when it will be done? Any photos or descriptions about what has or hasn't been done would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance
  3. Hi, I read a few reports on cruise critic about quite recent MS Rotterdam cruises where some ports are missed because of not funtional tender service. From the writting I got the impression that the non functional service was quite consistent. Apparently it lasted several days thus multiple ports are missed. And apparently all of the tender boats were not functional at the same time. I‘m now quite concerned as our upcoming cruise early August has 4 tender ports. I was quite shocked how HAL had handled the situation on board, if actually that happened what has been reported in the reviews. But if HAL knows the situation now and does not inform passengers of upcoming cruises properly I would consider this as very bad business behaviour. Still hope HAL is able to solve the problem. Does anybody have info if this problem has been solved? Or if the problem actually existed at all? You know about this faked reviews which goes in both directions. The good and bad one. regards MBerry
  4. Hi everyone, Is there someone on the Rotterdam right now to help me? We are sailing on her at the end of July and wondered if you can tell me who is playing in the Piano Bar? And who is playing in the Ocean Trio? Many thanks, we love the smaller ships and those two Bars. Happy Sailing. Richard
  5. Hi, on our last cruise on MS Koningsdam it was no problem to find a free lounger somewhere. Even on sunny sea days no problem at all. But to find a lounger in the shade was a big problem sometimes. We plan our next cruise on MS Rotterdam. I saw some pictures of the lower promenade deck with loungers. There is shade. Are these loungers dedicated to the Lanai cabins or can they be used by all guests? Maybe the ones directly in front of Lanai cabins should be dedicated as this is more or less their balcony, but maybe some extra loungers are available to all guests. What are the rules here? cheers MBerry
  6. Does the Rotterdam have on-demand movies available on the stateroom televisions or are DVD players still used?
  7. Have Rotterdam Cabin B7067 for Panama Canal Cruise in Feb 2020. Is this an oversized balcony that wraps around. Any comments about this cabin?
  8. We would be new to HA and are considering an itinerary for next year that has many sea days. Is there a 2nd pool on the very top deck and if so, is it open to all guests? What activities or entertainment are available on the Rotterdam to keep busy on multiple sea days? Thank you!
  9. We are going on the Rotterdam next month from Amsterdam, up the coast and fjords of Norway and above the Arctic Circle and over to stops in Iceland back to Amsterdam where we stay for the 2nd segment around the British Isles. Probably would have been easier to have looked up the title of the cruise. Never been on the Rotterdam before nor the 2 other couples going with us. So the question is: which bars ot lounges have pre dinner drink specials? Buffalo Man
  10. The ship. It had been two years since we sailed ms Rotterdam and the ship's inside public places were extensively done over in a very nice way. New carpets, new upholstery and a general new feel when walking around deck 4 and 5. Inside our verandah cabin the couch was new, not leathery this time, and the cabin was clean with no defects. Airconditioning worked fine the whole two weeks. The washroom however was not updated. Everything worked, hot/cold water, flush, but the general condition of the bath, although clean, was bad. Apparently the area around the bath faucets was and had been leaking with a lot of rust as a result. This was painted over, but rust was already apparent again. This fortunately did not lesson the enjoyment of the cruise, but is something HAL should attend to as they will keep ships like Rotterdam for another ten years as told by the hotel director on the ship. Dining. Admittedly a subjective subject, we think the choice and quality of the meals in the mdr has improved greatly. I liked every course I selected, which has not always been the case, and it was never a problem to order seconds. There is no charge for a second main course. The lido was used for breakfast and lunch. Quality is good with lots of choices, italian corner, far lands (asian) corner, sushi corner, salad bar, fixed sandwiches etc. On the aft deck you can order made to order pizza, we did that once and it was good and in the covered pool was a snackbar with hamburgers and fries, also good. I sometime read about bad attendance by lido waiters but that is not the case here. Tables were cleaned in record time and they came around for water/koffie etc very often. It seemed like a full house and that reflected in a very busy lido, so to have a table of choice you would have to come early. We did not do pinnacle or canalletto. Crew. They were fabulous as ever. From cabin stewards, dining stewards, in fact everybody you met, it was all smiles and helpfullness. Itinerary. Due to strong winds the harbour of Warnemunde closed and it was not safe anyway to dock there. This was to be the start of Berlin tours and was a great dissapointment for passengers who had embarked on the previous cuise and had stayed on for this one, they had already missed two ports and this would be the third. So another seaday, but the captain announced already at noon that the next day's scheduled sea day would be replaced with an impromptu port stop at Riga and that turned out to be a great one! Rotterdam had never been there before, in fact only Prinsendam had. Every other, scheduled, stop was in general early to arrive and on time to leave. Overall. It was a great cruise, despite the unusual cold weather for the baltic.
  11. We r considering a 32 day Hawaii/So Pacific Rotterdam Cruise. First time on HAL but have been on many other cruise lines. A couple of questions: Is there a self service laundry? Is there a piano bar? Are gratuities billed daily or paid individually at end of cruise? Does dinning have traditional and anytime dinning offered? And last but not least, does the ship pretty much close down early? Like 10ish? TIA
  12. Has any one had an oceanview room midship on Deck One on the Rotterdam? Was it noisy? What could you see?
  13. We will be on the Rotterdam in October for 42 days. Has the audio/visual systems been upgraded to include the flat screen TVs and does it have the ability of streaming movies like the new ships or does it still have a DVD player?
  14. After 30 years on RCCL, Celebrity & Princess looks like we will try HAL. Looking at a 32 day cruise in Feb 2021 to Hawaii & South Pacific. Looking for a good size/ locations Ocean View room. Any suggestions from someone who has been on the Rotterdam, any areas not to try, or great rooms you have had on decks 2 or 3. Thanks Charlie
  15. Well, almost. Prinsendam was here once in the ninteen nineties something. Because of cancelled Warnemunde ms Rotterdam sailed for the first time ever up the river to Riga. Helped by two tugs she reversed in the relatively small river and docked behind a britisch warship, almost in front of the old town! The excursion desk had managed to find some tours and the local hop on hop of busses were waiting. There was only a slightly minor setback. The wind was still blowing strong with a temperature just above freezing and sometimes snowgrains fell. A few off our fellow passengers had not accounted for the weather and had to rush back to the ship. All in all an excellent substitution arranged in record time. I say, HAL use this port more often!
  16. Two years ago we did a Panama Canal transit on the Amsterdam (West to East). One of the highlights of the cruise was a specialty dinner in the Pinnacle based on the menu from Le Cirque restaurant in New York City. This year we're doing another transit, this time East to West, on the Rotterdam. I can't find any reference to this dinner and am curious if this is offerred on the Rotterdam. Thanks
  17. As forecasted, the winds this morning were very strong. The waves in the harbour were around two and a half meters or roughly 8 feet and the harbourmaster closed the inner port. As the wind was forecasted to increase it was not safe to dock anywhere else and the captain took the safe decision to cancel Warnemunde. Warnemunde is used for excursions to Berlin, so a lot of people will be disappointed. They are now looking to replace tomorrows scheduled seaday into a port stop in Riga. As I'm writing this they confirmed Riga as a substitute, so it is a good and fast followup!
  18. We chose this cruise and ship based on pricing and ease of getting to the port as it was a short 90 minute drive for us. We parked at Parkway through groupon which was a easy location to find and the crew working the parking was very efficient. We got dropped off in the "luggage zone" around 11:45 and made our way into the check in area. We were pleasantly surprised that the lines were practically non existent and passed through quickly arriving at the check in counter and on our way to board the ship in under 15 minutes. First impression was as expected, we knew the Rotterdam was an older and small ship and had done research ahead of time. You board on the 4th deck so you do not walk right into the grand atrium which is on deck 5 so basically you walk on and offered a champagne glass and directed to the Lido for lunch or since our room was ready we could go and drop off our carry on and head to lunch. Big surprise as typically we usually waited until 1:30 for room access. First impression was great! We ate our first lunch and was not disappointed the buffet has numerous stations and numerous options. Most of the main stations you are served by a crew member with stations like fruits, dessert and pre made sandwiches as help yourself.
  19. Looking at a 32 days cruise from/to San Diego either November 2020 or February 2021. Can anybody advise which period is better regarding weather etc. Peter

  21. Hi! I wanted to give a little, quick account of our sailing aboard the Rotterdam departing Tampa 03/31/19. We flew into Tampa then rented a small SUV at the airport Enterprise then drove to Clearwater Beach for two nights. We stayed at Frenchy's Oasis Motel. EXCELLENT location! It's actually on the bayside of Clearwater Beach. Excellent parking situation and an easy walk to many nice restaurants. You literally would never have to move your vehicle....but we DID and drove to Honeymoon Island. We like to hike around and do a little birdwatching and this was a fantastic place. Sunday morning came entirely too quickly and we made the easy drive to the Enterprise on Kennedy Blvd in Tampa to drop the car off. They had a quick and easy shuttle to the cruise terminal and the whole thing was just a breeze. I have to say I can't remember getting to a cruise terminal so early as the car rental return was one of the smoothest ever! It was probably around 945am or so we arrived at the terminal....and there was all of about ten folks in front of us. It wasn't long before we went thru security. I believe we were the third couple thru priority security. We had one of the Pinnacle Suites so we were led to a back smaller waiting area with suites and those Mariners with priority boarding. We were in the chairs one and two from the door. About 1130AM we were escorted aboard...the first aboard other than those doing back to back cruises! That was a first! Once aboard we were escorted to our cabin, 7004. In life one experiences only a FEW jaw-dropping moments. Carol of course had NO idea what cabin we were going to. When I say her jaw dropped, it's an understatement! The look was PRICELESS! I had seen a few pictures here and there and KINDA knew what to expect but the suite WAS better than I expected. I have stayed in a OS on the Oasis and a CS on the Silhouette but this was beyond either of those. The couch area(THAT COUCH!) and the WINDOWS was awesome! The balcony had actual LOUNGERS which seem to be going the way of the dinosaurs these days. How about two toilets? We had it! There was also closet and hanging space for days. The flowers and the artwork(all over the ship!) was over the top. The fresh flowers were beautiful! Carol even got her own bouquet! 🙂 (to be continued)
  22. Does anyone have a preferred method of private transportation from the Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam/AMS (Schiphol) airport? Doing an early debarkation from ship and no transfers available with HAL. Sun Transfers doesn't seem to be an option for Rotterdam Cruise Port to AMS. Thank you.

  24. Finally home from 7 day Rotterdam 3/24 - 3/31. Celebrated dad 87th birthday and all 3 of us hitting 500 days. Aft cabin 6236. Embarkation - Fast and easy. We valet parked at port about 10:30, security and check in a breeze. No lines. In room by 11:30. Cabin was smaller than we usually get but the balcony was big. We easily had 3 chairs, small side table and the lead table from the cabin out there. We spent alot of time out there. Dad had all of this breakfasts out there. We ordered dinner first formal night to eat on balcony. Worked out great. Breakfast for mom and I in lido. Omelettes and raisin buns. Loved those raisin buns. Lunch in Lido or off ship. The pizza was some of the best. Good selection of sandwiches and had a made to order sandwich station. As always, the salads were wonderful, made to order. DInner was in Lido and main dining room. We normally only do main dining room. With 4 port days we got pretty lazy once we got back on the ship. We really enjoyed dinner in the Lido. The carved beef tenderloin was as tender and flavorful as could be. They had a 'kids' station which mom loved since she could get baked mac and cheese anytime! Great 'guest flavors' of ice cream. We got butter pecan, pistachio , rocky road, rum raisin, black walnut and cookies and cream. Dinner in the Pinnacle one night. Loved the new menu. The cheesecake lollipops were fantastic. Steak was perfect, charred outside and medium rare center. Love the addition of the beets. Laundry service was quick. Got most of it folded. In our basket was a very nice hand written note by the person who folded it. It was nice because I could mention them on the comment card and on the survey. Did not do any of the main shows. A singing group (twice) and magician and comics. We hit the casino. It paid out during our week. I came home ahead and got another casino offer last day. The gentleman next to on the buffalos hit a $3,200 bonus payout on a 90 cent bet I think. Machines hit lots of bonuses and the casino host gave out alot of free drinks. You could find us at 8:45 each evening at the Piano Bar. Barry from Boston is the best. We had such a good time. Even the trivia was fun. I am not much on trivia but dad and I came in second place. Such a good crowd and we all had fun. If you get the chance to sail with him, spend some time in the piano bar. Nice and loud so you can sing your heart out! Never saw the Captain, Hotel Mgr, or many of the kids on board. Probably because they did not hang out on our balcony, casino or piano bar!! Ports were fun. Key West - parked at Mallory Square. Mahogany Bay - Nice area to walk and take magic carpet ride to beach. Guatamala - It rained. We left ship and went to shopping building. They had a nice bazaar set up. We bought a couple things there and had a beer. Bought some huge bottles of water there for $2. Some for us and some for cabin steward. Costa Maya Mexico was a beautiful port and great weather. Long pier but luckily the free trolley was running. We wandered about, bought vanilla and had some of the best mexican food. Our last fomal night was Costa Maya day. So full from lunch, dad gave up his lobster and we ate in the lido. (He loves his lobster). No lobster in lido but they did have shrimp cocktails so he got his fill of seafood. The last sea day we ate in the Pinnacle for lunch. It was so so good. Their hamburger is wonderful as was the brownie with caramel corn. The chocolate surprise on the last formal night was very good. They had a nice selection of goodies and came through the piano bar. It was a quick 7 day cruise. I prefer to be on longer. Seems like we just unpack and it is time to pack back up. Next cruise we get our 5 star benefits. The crew were all great from the cabin steward to the dining room stewards to lido staff. Housekeeping staff supervisors checking often to make sure all needs were met. We had one room steward, not the team. He was always around to open the door for me when my hands were full. Once thing I almost forgot, I went down to the front desk to ask where I could pick up the morning NY Times paper. (On our last cruise, they were not at the front desk in a holder) She asked if I would like it delivered each morning. I asked for 2 copies and they were in our mailbox each morning with our name and room number on it. It was a nice touch. Disembarkation was quick and easy. We were through customs so fast and in car before 9 am. Missed the Tamarind on the larger ships but loved the Rotterdam. It is one of my favorite ships. Hate that she is leaving Tampa. Bought our FCC's, so looking for a nice Oct/Nov cruise to book.
  25. Here is the video of our 14 day Rotterdam cruise in March. It is, I know, quite long, but it WAS a fourteen day cruise with lots of ports. There are many photos of the ship interspersed throughout the video.
