Apologies for any mistakes - power is out in half the town (no internet) so I am doing this on my phone. I am sadly lacking in phone typing skills!
  3. Does anyone know why Volendam is going into dry dock in oct 2019
  4. I'm cruising to Alaska on the Volendam 9/4. I'm very tempted to get a spa pass but I've never been to a ship spa. It seems like a big commitment to get a pass for a week. Do you know if they have day passes, and how much they cost? Also, I'm a little wary of the water in the thermal pool - is it safe as far as bacteria goes? Has anyone has any problems? Despite my fears, I'd love to spend time in the spa!
  5. Hi Everyone, Not long now until our Alaska cruise on the Volendam on the 24th July. We are first time cruisers and in a NS. We went with open dining too for flexibility. There will be two Gala nights. Does the pinnacle grill also participate in the Gala nights or is it a separate menu always ? We have a meal in the Pinnacle included and I am wondering if its worth using it on one of the Gala nights or saving it for a different evening. Second question is about room service served course by course on your balcony. How early in advance does this need to be planned ? We were thinking of using room service on the days we are late in port so that we can hop back on the ship for a quick dinner and then head off again to explore Juneau and Skagway - maybe check out a local bar. Cheers☺️
  6. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Disney Wonder at the AJ dock from 0600-1315, Regatta at the FKL dock from 0700-1600, and Seven Seas Mariner at the AS dock from 1000-2300. More nice weather for Juneau with sunny skies and a high of 83F/28C (low of 59F/15C). Sunrise is at 4:01 am and sunset at 10:03 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam on Monday.
  7. Is this a good choice? Under lido outdoor dining area.
  8. Hi Everyone, We are on the Volendam to the inside passage departing Vancouver on the 24th July. We are booked in a Neptune suite. I had a HAL rep tell me that there is no priority boarding for Neptune suite passengers. Could anyone that has boarded at Canada Place previously give me some guidelines on what the actual process is ? We are first time cruisers so completely ignorant and don't know what to expect! Boarding time is stipulated as 12pm on our boarding passes. We have transfers included to the port from our hotel. Any other tips for first things we should do once we board ? Thanks 😃
  9. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Disney Wonder at the AJ dock from 0645-1645, Grand Princess at the FKL dock from 1330-2215, and Asuka II at the AS dock from 0800-1700. Asuka II was originally Crystal Harmony but was transferred to Crystal's parent company. She is doing a "Hawaii and Grand Alaska" cruise which is round-trip from Yokohama. Another nice day in Juneau with a partly cloudy sky and a 0% chance of rain. High will be 81F/27C and the low 57F/14C. Sunrise is at 3:54 am and sunset at 10:08 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Maasdam on Sunday, June 30.
  10. Hi all you frequent holland america cruisers. Just about to book our bucket list trip to Alaska cruising the volendam out of vancouver. We are going to book a oceanview cabin on main deck. We are torn between a category c which is midship, deck 2, no obstructions or a category e cabin which appear to be very forward, not sure about obstructions. It appears that there is approximately $1000.00 difference between these cabins. Is the midship cabin c, worth the extra dollars??. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Bob.
  11. The first day of summer brings two HAL ships to Juneau. Amsterdam will be at the FKL dock (an unusual spot for a HAL ship) from 0800-2200 and Volendam will be at the AS dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Disney Wonder at the AJ dock from 0645-1645 and Seabourn Sojourn at the CT dock from 1100-2200. A lovely summer day is in store for Juneau with a mostly sunny day. High is predicted to be 69F/21C and the low 54F/12C. Sunrise is at 3:51 am and sunset at 10:08 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam on Monday.
  12. I received an upsell email yesterday, 6 days before we set sail on the 7 day Inside Passage to Alaska on the Volendam out of Vancouver. We booked cabin HH7086 last June for $1299 and then added explore 4 for $200. I was excited for this cabin since it was the next best thing to a verandah without the cost (~$2800 when I booked). This is our first cruise on HAL and to Alaska. I called the number and HAL offered an upgrade for $199 pp. They gave me a choice of 3 different Vista Suites: A7054, B6225 & B6228. The last two are handicap accessible. We took B6225. I think we did pretty good on the price overall. What to you experienced HAL cruisers think? Does anyone have experience with cabin 6225 or a Vista Suite in general? I noticed it was over the dining room but hopefully that isn't a problem. There is also access to the aft deck on 6 which is a bonus.
  13. Only two ships are spending Flag Day in Juneau. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200 (and nobody will be blocking our view). Disney Wonder will be at the AJ dock from 0645-1645. There is only a 10% chance of rain and the forecast is for a mix of sunshine and clouds. High will be 65F/18C and the low 52F/11C. Sunrise is at 3:51 am and sunset at 10:05 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: the Signature Sisters on Monday (and "Himself" will be on NA).
  14. Hi guys. Bob and Christine from Aussie speaking. Considering doing our bucket list cruise to Alaska in may of 2020. We are thinking of doing h/a volendam out of vancouver packaged with a land trip through the Canadian Rockies. This long journey has been on our minds for years now and we are finally about to book. Is the volendam a good ship for this trip?. It also does glacier bay which we have been told is a must do. Any feedback would be very much appreciated. kind regards Bob 😁👍
  15. As we sit in Denver’s airport following a very bumpy flight from the east coast through some Midwestern tornadoes, I think it’s safe to start a live thread. Please join my wife and I as we sail on the lovely ms Volendam May 22 through Alaska’s Inside Passage to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and the magnificent Glacier Bay. Before we board, we’ll be spending three full says in Vancouver, staying at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. Plans for Vancouver include wandering, eating and sleeping. This is a well-earned getaway for us both. We have a few great excursions lined up for our cruise. We will be taking the Tracy Arm excursion directly from the ship before she rocks in Juneau. In Skagway we are doing a bus trip to Bennet Lake and then the White Pass railroad back. In Ketchikan we had booked a trip with Mountain Air but unfortunately due to tragic news I’m sure you all know we no longer can do that. Instead we will play it by ear. This is our second trip to Alaska, the first was back in 2008 on the Westerdam. That was our first HAL cruise; this will be our 7th. We received a note the other day that due to tide issues to be at Canada Place between 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for a 3 p.m. sail away. So, follow along. I’ll be posting photos. Lots of photos. I’ll do my best to make it worthwhile! But please ignore typos as I’m positing solely from my iPhone XS. More tomorrow from Vancouver.
  16. Amsterdam is making her first visit of the season to Juneau. She will be at the AS dock from 0800-2200. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Disney Wonder at the AJ dock from 0645-1645 and Azamara Quest will be at the FKL dock from 1000-2300. A very nice day (by Juneau standards) is predicted. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and only a 20% chance of rain. High will be 65F/18C and the low 49F/9C. Sunrise is at 3:55 am and sunset at 9:59 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam AND Maasdam on Monday.
  17. Are the walls inside the Volendam cabins magnetic? How about the door? Thanks!
  18. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port are Disney Wonder at the AJ dock from 0645-1645, Azamara Quest at the FKL dock from 0730-1800, and, blocking our view, Silver Muse at the AS dock from 0800-2300. Sunrise is at 4:03 am and sunset at 9:49 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam on Monday.
  19. Do they offer bridge tours any longer? If so, who do we contact? Sailing on the Volendam June 12
  20. A fairly quiet Friday with only two ships in port. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Since there will not be a ship at the AS dock, we will have a clear view all day. Also in port is Disney Wonder at the AJ dock from 0645-1645. Weather should be a little nicer than Thursday's. There is only a 30% chance of rain with partly cloudy skies in the afternoon. High will be 58F/14C and the low 43F/6C. Sunrise is at 4:15 am and sunset at 9:24 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: The Signature Sisters on Monday. Everyone have a safe Memorial Day weekend!
  21. We will be on the Volendam, sailing 18 September 2019 out of Vancouver for Alaska. I was interested to know, what entertainment will be aboard the Volendam. Thank you.
  22. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. She is the only ship in port. Not the nicest of days forecast for Friday. There is an 80% chance of rain although the prediction is for rain early and cloudy later in the day. High will be 59F/15C and the low 44F/7C. Sunrise is at 4:27 am and sunset at 9:23 pm. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: One of my favorite ships, Queen Elizabeth will be making her maiden visit to Juneau on Saturday and there will be a good view of her at the AS dock. There is a very rare HAL sighting in Juneau on Sunday with the visit of Maasdam.
  23. Are there still irons and ironing boards in the self serve laundry rooms on the Volendam?
  24. Volendam will be at the CT dock from 1300-2200. Also in port is Coral Princess at the FKL dock from 1200-2200. Although Thursday was a fairly nice day in Juneau, Friday is not forecast to be as nice. The PTZtv webcam can be found at https://www.juneauharborwebcam.com/. Next up: the Signature sisters on Monday.
  25. Hello, I'm new to HAL and planning an Inside Passage cruise out of Vancouver on the Volendam in Aug 2020. Debating whether to select a cabin upfront or take our chances and let HAL choose. Is it likely we will get least desirable (noisy, etc.) cabin if we let HAL choose ? Would you spend an extra $300pp to sail in June/July (rather than 3rd week of August) or use it to guarantee a cabin mid-ship which seems to be the most desirable? Also has anyone experienced seasickness on this particular route ? I've been sick on deep sea fishing boats and on a sailboat boat on Lake Michigan in choppy waters but not a cruise (have been on 3). I've read that motion sickness isn't so much an issue on the IP cruises out of Vancouver Thanks in advance for your help.
