Bringing Dog from USA to NZ

Recommended Posts

Perhaps you should contact Johnny Depp for advice on this matter.

After all he has some form in bringing a dog to Australia by plane.

As a fellow American, Johnny can probably provide some insight to the can do's and cannot do's in relation to this part of the world.

Why he may even provide some financial assistance to you in this matter.

Was all a storm in a rum cup, twas jack sparrows parrots disguised as dogs.

Nothing to see here folks, move along.:)

Returning to the Op's question, which is bringing a dog from the US to NZ - no mention of Australia, so Johnny Depp and his antics are irrelevant.

OP how are you getting on with your enquiries? Are you contemplating coming to live in NZ?

NZ border protection laws are stricter than Australia's.

The dog will still have a tougher time getting into NZ.

You think I haven't already told her that? And given web sites that could help?

I live in NZ and travel to Australia quite often.

Bringing pets to New Zealand

If you’re bringing a cat or dog from:

Australia, you usually don’t need a permit — but your pet will need a post-arrival inspection

an approved country, you’ll need a permit to import

another country, your pet won't be allowed into NZ until it’s spent 6 months in an approved country and you can provide a vet certificate.

https://www.govt.nz/browse/immigration-and-visas/bringing-things-into-nz/bringing-pets-into-new-zealand/

Banned dogs

There are certain types of dogs that aren’t allowed to be imported to NZ at any time:

the American pit bull terrier

Brazilian fila

dogo Argentino

Japanese tosa

Perro de Presa Canario.

This site offers a step by step guide. https://www.mpi.govt.nz/importing/live-animals/pets/steps-to-importing-cats-and-dogs/

A Canadian woman tried to bring a cat into NZ in her handbag. She was picked up when she did not want the bag X-Rayed .Both her and the cat were denied entry and put on the next plane back home

  • 1 year later...
Does anyone happen to know of a cruise of some sort (I really don't care what kind of boat it is as long as it's not a yacht) that would allow me to take my pet dog with me? It would be a 1-way trip from USA to NZ, which means the dog will be going through all the import rigamarole (so maybe that makes a difference in the answer?). I did email the NZ animal import office and they say they can't give me any such information. Maris has a route that would be perfect - their FAQs state pets are not allowed, but I sent a message via their contact webpage to ask anyway....so far it has been well over a week and I haven't heard back (guess the next step will be to call). Figured I'd also try asking here if anyone can at least point me in the right direction!

I realize this discussion took place two years ago, but I am wondering if you had any luck finding a cruise that allowed you to take your dog to NZ. I am in a similar situation. I need to travel to NZ with two cats (one-way trip). Thanks!

Welcome to Cruise critic. I would suggest contacting NZ government first before approaching cruise ships. Is there a specific reason why they need to cruise there?

My assumption was, as they ask about one way, that they are moving to NZ.

Before you even start think about how you get to New Zealand, you will need to contact MPI:

Have a look at this website: https://www.mpi.govt.nz/importing/live-animals/pets/steps-to-importing-cats-and-dogs/

Good luck and hope you make it to NZ! :)

People who move can still use a plane, I don't see how a cruise helps, apart from having a cruise.

Removal companies who specialise in world wide movements are shipping animals every day .They would know everything that was required.

It's an easier way to go, and bulk luggage is less costly (which is a factor when making a move.) Plus some people don't like to fly.
