mapleleaves Posted April 24, 2016 #1 Share Posted April 24, 2016 (edited) Many towns/ports have web sites to promote tourism and local vendors. ie http://www.experienceketchikan.com/ Most are included in this comprehensive list of resources from the Alaska forum of tripadvisor. If it's not there, just google the town's name followed by VISITOR INFORMATION or CHAMBER of COMMERCE. Some will send you a free visitors guide or it may be available to download. TRIPADVISOR Resource Page: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28923-c193047/Alaska:United-States:Resources.To.Help.You.Plan.Your.Visit.html This site is specifically for cruiseship passengers: http://www.cruiseportinsider.com/portlist.html#.Vqzv9tCGN9Y Glacier Bay for cruiseship pax: https://www.nps.gov/glba/planyourvisit/cruise.htm Mendenhall Glacier http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3835583.pdf Lots of info in http://www.alaska.org/. YouTube is a great resource for just about any activity or excursion. Edited April 24, 2016 by mapleleaves

JDinWA Posted April 25, 2016 #4 Share Posted April 25, 2016 Just a warning -- our first visit to Seward, I sent for their "free destination guide" at their site: http://www.seward.com/visit-seward/trip-planner/ I got email from just about every business in town. I'm guessing they share the info with all the Chamber members.
diesel1973 Posted April 26, 2016 #5 Share Posted April 26, 2016 If doing a land tour a guidebook called The Milepost is very helpful. It is available at some libraries and bookstores. It has all the points of interest,hotels,rest.,etc. It also has the distance between each which is very helpful in planning driving time. I think they publish a new edition every year. mapleleaves Posted May 6, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted May 6, 2016 In Skagway and Seattle visit the Klondike Gold Rush National Park. Learn about the people who left everything behind to search for their fortune in the Yukon. Both are free. Skagway offers ranger led tours. Glaciers Posted July 23, 2016 #19 Share Posted July 23, 2016 Thank you for starting this thread mapleleaves! It’s a fantastic source of Alaska information. Although the http://www.anchorage.net site is a wonderful site for planning, Visit Anchorage is a membership based organization paid for by Anchorage hotel bed taxes and only their members are listed on this site. It is still very comprehensive and easy to navigate. It’s my first stop for planning our in-state trips. The site is administered by the friendly folks at the Log Cabin Visitor Center on the corner of 4th Ave & F St. A very good stop for anyone looking for information when they’re in town. mapleleaves Posted July 23, 2016 Author #20 Share Posted July 23, 2016 Yes indeed, the folks at the visitor center are very helpful and friendly. Plus the Log Cabin , sod roof and beautiful flowers, provide a great photo op.
Glaciers Posted July 23, 2016 #21 Share Posted July 23, 2016 Anchorage hotels can be very expensive during the summer. The University of Alaska Anchorage has dorm rooms available that are clean with private bathrooms. They include linens, have laundry facilities and internet among other things although no TV. Rates start at $65/night. https://www.uaa.alaska.edu/about/administrative-services/departments/business-services/conferences-services/guesthousing/index.cshtml
