Our ship (NCL Jade in August 2017) is stopping at Haugesund, and I am having trouble finding anything much on what to do there. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hi crimlaw,

How did you go in Haugesund? We'll be in port for 1 day (Queen Victoria June 2018) & looking for any ideas, suggestions on things to do

You can find a lot of information on the Haugesund tourism website:

https://en.visithaugesund.no/

The viking cultural exhibits at Avaldsnes are one of the more popular attractions for international visitors, and they offer a dedicated bus to align with certain cruise port calls (2018 dates have not yet been posted, so the current list is still from 2017. Check back in a few months for updates).

We will be there in July and would like to visit scudeshaven as well as the Kormoy beaches but can't find any tours. The ship tour doesn't do this. Would appreciate any advice

It depends a bit on which beach(es) you'd like to visit. The information on VisitNorway gives a good overview of a walk that includes Åkrasanden and Stavasanden: https://www.visitnorway.com/listings/karm%C3%B8y-beaches-hike-the-white-sandy-dunes/7822/ It includes information on how to get there, but the bus numbers look to be slightly out of date. Check the Kolumbus website for current bus numbers, timings, and fares. You can use some of the same bus lines to travel to Skudeneshavn.

I emailed the tourist office in Haugesund and this was their very helpful response:

Welcome to Haugesund & Haugalandet – we look forward to seeing you! J

You can get a day pass on the local bus for 95 NOK – with this you can take a trip to Karmøy for example where you can visit The Viking farm and History Centre on Avaldsnes, the white sandy beaches in Åkrahamn or the old town of Skudeneshavn, here you have links for these trips;

Thanks very much for sharing this info, it’s really useful. I think we may catch the bus to Skudeneshavn. It looks an interesting little place, but I didn’t fancy the P&O tour there as it seems a lot of money for little time. As the bus is hourly, we can catch that without worrying we’ll miss the one bus back to the ship in time ;) and the local bus may be more fun than a coach. Though on coach journeys, we do get interesting information from the local guides.

I wasn’t sure about the Viking farm/centre as I’m really interested in that period, and LOVE the Viking ship museum nr Oslo (been twice)... but looking online it seemed as though this place nr Haugesund is aimed at children. I may find it a bit ‘lacking’. I might keep it in reserve if we have time on the way back, as it seems the same bus number 10 serves both.

If it’s raining the Haugesund local history museum looks interesting. May take a phone app though, to convert Norwegian to English, as reviews say there are few English descriptions on items!

We are going to be in Haugesund on 1st May, so probably won't want to spend all our time outside.

The P&O Historic Avaldsnes and Viking Village description says 'there is approximately 2 and 3/4 hours of walking throughout this tour.'

Has anyone done this tour? I am hoping soeone can let me know how this nearly 3 hours of walking is broken up.

I see that the walk from St Olav's Church to the Viking Village is slightly steep and approximately 15 minutes each way.
