Nynashawn port to Stockholm transportation options

Recommended Posts

You should be docking very close to the train station, so you might want to price out independent transportation once you find out what the shuttle costs through princess. You may have already checked this, but is it listed under the excursions for Stockholm in your cruise planner?

You have 2 options for going into Stockholm from Nynashamn. The expensive ship tours (on your own) or via train. You can be in Stockholm before those buses leave the ship if you take the first train.

First thing to know is that this is no longer a tender port even though Princess will still list it as such. As of last year there is a retractable pier that extends out to the ship so you can walk ashore which saves alot of time. Here is a video of the Regal and the new pier.

Taking the train to/from Stockholm is simple. You can get a 24 pass that will cover the cost of the train + subway, trains, tram, buses in the city + the ferry from old town to Djurgarden which is where the Vasa is located. As soon as you get to the end of the pier there will be a small TI building where you will be able to purchase the transit pass. Go inside! Alot of people walked right past. It was around 120 SEK I believe and the final cost for two passes on our credit card ended up being $27.46. We paid by credit card and were also given a sheet of paper on how to get to the train station including the train schedule with return times. It was very simple, just follow the blue or yellow lines on the pavement out of the port to the station. Both are equal distance, take the blue (15 min walk). We hopped on the train which was there waiting. We saw alot of people take the shuttle bus which arrived after we were already on the train. All those people apparently still had to buy tickets at the station because they were focused on the bus they didn't get their tickets at the port. Most of these missed the first train.

Basically it's simple to do it on your own and on your terms. 12 hrs is enough time to get there and back.

Your welcome. Stockholm was my fav port stop and even though the train was an hour each way we still had plenty of time. Just make sure you know what your doing and where your going to maximize time. Any Qs pls feel free to ask

thanks Anthony...will come back with more questions re Stockholm as we count down to our cruise in August.

what did you manage to see during your day in Stockholm? did you wander around Gamla Stan?

what time do you suggest we head back to port (we're there on a Sunday)?

thank you.

First thing we did was go to the city hall because we wanted to do a tour and climb the tower. Only 30 people are allowed per tour and you can't prebook. We arrived before 9 however the first tour was already booked. So rather than wait we decided to book the last tour of the day since the train station is about a 10 min walk away.

There is a elevator you can take halfway then you walk as a group so to speak up to the top. Once your finished taking pictures you are free to leave on your own and walk all the way back down. The views were amazing over Gamla Stan and afternoon was best due to the sun behind us.

Fee: SEK 50 Credit cards are accepted. Reopens on June 1, 2017

Entry times: 9:10, 9:50, 10:30, 11:10, 11:50, 12:30, 1:10, 1:50, 2:30, 3:10, 3:50 (there are later tours but this is the absolutely last one if you want to get back to the ship)

Afterward we walked over to Gamla Stan and did the Rick Steves self walking tour which was good followed by lunch and shopping. We took the ferry from there over to the island where the Vasa museum is located. We spent a couple hrs and decided to walk leisurely back to the city hall along the waterfront. We ended up taking the 4:49 train back since we were early. Had planned on the 5:04. Of course once back you follow the blue line back to the port...ABBA concert was blasting up on the MUTS screen. :)

From Stockholm Central: 4:34, 4:49, 5:04 (every 15 min) - Track 13/14

Be prepared to bum rush on to the return train if you want a seat. The platform was crowded and the train was heading back full with locals. With it being a Sunday there shouldn't be many people going home from work.

Platform assignments for commuter trains will change this summer when CItybanan opens on July 10th.

Commuter trains are planned to use the new Stockholm CIty station which is about 40m below ground while the current

Central station will be used for regional and intercity trains.

  • 5 months later...

you can buy a day ticket for the local shuttle (pier to train station and vice versa) at the shop near the pier.

here, you can also buy the 24 hour SL ticket for train to/from Stockholm.

if you only wish to buy a single ticket to/from Stockholm, you need to buy it from the train station itself.

we walked from the pier to the train station...a gentle uphill walk at times...about 20 minutes walk.

train journey into Stockholm is 1 hour 6 mins.

we were advised to use the first carriage when we returned from Stockholm.
