Re-booking at lower fare

i noticed in passing some passengers mention re-booking at a lower fare or better promotion. I know cruise prices are fluid, with a supply-and-demand dynamic.

Can someone enlighten me about obtaining a re-booking at a better deal? Do you go through a travel agent? Do you forfeit your original initial deposit?

You don't have to go through a travel agent, you can get your price reduced if you book direct with Royal or with an agent. Howevr, you must request the price drop before the cruise final payment date. You don't forfeit your deposit as long as you don't change ship or sailing date.
