Cruise ship passenger fined for having cannabis

Who said anything about Bermuda not having the right to in force there laws. If you have proof that someone is doing something wrong deal with the problem.

But doing random room searches is different in my mind. If I didn't do anything wrong I don't want to be bothered or harassed. And to top it off I keep a lot of valuables and cash in my safe and do not want it opened if I am not in the room.

Oh and by the way. Was it necessary to put your little 2 cents dig at the end of your statement. Real class

If you objectively re-read the post to which I was responding you might not take such exception. Your contention was that the authorities came aboard and did random searches for the sole purpose of raising money - and that the fact that the line paid fees to dock there should make passengers immune.

So far all the recent articles indicate that the police did have specific information. A new article, another case reported today. Scent of cannabis from the cabin. Seems to be a trend of receiving info from the cruise lines.

Way back in post #7 I said "It's often the result of a tip", so I'm not disputing that, but I'm reluctant to expand that statement to say that it's always the result of a tip.

I recall on one of my trips to Bermuda a dog with two handlers was moving slowly down two corridors I noted. I have no way of knowing what they were looking for - or if such dogs could detect cannabis in a safe in a room they were passing , but I suppose it might be possible that such active procedures might work. I know that even my unsophisticated sense of smell can detect burning cannabis fairly readily.

The Proof is the Dogs NOSE.

If they don't smell anything, they will walk past your cabin with no hassle.

Only the guilty need worry.

Oh And by the way.

D.W. did get hit on by the USA Dog @ embarkation with a Brand New unopened Prescribed Controlled substance pain pill as we entered the gangway.

in jamaica the dealers sell you weed then wait at the ship with the police to point you out so you have to pay a fine to get back on the ship. what a racquet. they are such corrupt beggars we do not even get off the ship there.

OMG

There was a drug story on one of those cable networks that in Jamaica the people who have been arrested and sentenced can reduce their time....prison....by selling the weed and then showing up at the security area (screening) as above point you out ....you get arrested and they get time off their sentence.

Money maker........for the authorities

Be safe

If people want to buy weed on vacation, they should just come to Colorado. It's legal, it's accepted, it's easy to buy in all forms (edibles, pills, creams, hard candies, those vapor pen things etc) and you can smoke it almost anywhere within reason, without hassle, and we love all the tax money :)

Had a guy in Jamaica try to get me to buy it and I kept having to tell him it wasn't a novelty to me because I'm from Colorado. He said he has the best stuff. I laughed and told him to come to Colorado someday. Instead of something grown in some field somewhere, ours is grown in high end greenhouses with special water purifying systems and minimal to no pesticides (and some is even labeled organic, haha); you've heard of wine snobs...we've now got weed snobs. I'm not a smoker myself, but it's so commonplace here that I forget it's illegal elsewhere. Such nonsense.

and another - Royal Gazette article;

New Yorker admits having drugs in cabin

http://www.royalgazette.com/court/article/20170616/new-yorker-admits-having-drugs-in-cabin

When will they ever learn

SBtS

Personally I am happy to hear that both the cruise line's security and local authority take this seriously. The last thing I want is to have my kids and family exposed to drugs on the cruise/ship.

So just for the sole purpose of generating funds they regularly come onto the boats to do random searches of cabins.

I see so many things wrong with this its not even funny.....let alone that you think the cruise lines would stand up to Bermuda and say we don't want our customers hassled while at your docks and our dollars we pay every week say so to.

And before everyone says I must be a stoner that is something I have not done in 25 years. I just have a big problem with my cabin being searched because I drew the unlucky straw.

No different than getting nailed by police for speeding a few miles over the speed limit in a little town who relies on the tickets for income

I have yet to be on a cruise where I haven't smelled weed. I'm quite familiar with the smell;)

I have only smelled it a couple of times on over 50 cruises so I think you are exaggerating about smelling it on every cruise , but maybe not since you cruise mostly on Carnival. From my two Carnival cruises I think the demographic could have more pot heads. On my second Carnival cruise, I didn't smell it but the police arrested someone for Canabis possesion on my deck when the ship arrived home in Florida. I am sure that on every cruise sailing some bring it. Not only weed, likely other drugs are brought onboard too. Bringing illegal drugs into another country is stupid but with the mass number of cruise passengers it is not surprising that some are clueless about consequences or think it won't be them that get caught. As we see from the reports some do get caught.

I have seen the dogs a couple times on my cruises to Bermuda, in both cases they were walking down the hall with their handler. One trip after a dog visit, we watched a man get escorted off the ship and his wife(?) was instructed to pack up the cabin and received the same escort off. The law is clear not to bring drugs into Bermuda. As we are guest on their island ....we need to be respectful.

Stoned and having drugs on you are 2 different things. The first woman had her room searched and the other stories about them following them to the ship had the drugs on them.

I was reading that article while you posted. He claimed it was for medical purposes but why would he take it and he apparatus off the ship in a suitcase? Another really weird person.

The glaring BS of his story is obvious when you read that he's from Atlanta, Georgia but has a California medical marijuana card ...not to mention the drug paraphernalia in his possession.

Yes, his story was BS. The judge let him off lightly in my opinion.
