Venice to finally ban mega ships

I know it’s something that’s been banded around for years and indeed a ban did exist a short while ago, but it would appear steps are now being taken to rid mega ships from sailing past St Marks.

All Silversea ships sailing to Venice will be fine to use the usual route and not diverted to the new terminal planned outside of the city. (Details in the link)

I was in Venice a couple of weeks ago and watched and filmed the ships sail past from the Cipriani. Though not monsters by today’s standards, they weren’t exactly graceful ..... apart from one which I specifically waited for.... the cloud... or Sea Cloud as she is known....

They note three to four years but the reality is it may not be that soon.

It did amuse me reading the article on the BBC website (who should have known better) that cruise ships over 100,000 tons would be banned from cruising up the Grand Canal - that would be some sort of feat of seamanship, not to mention demolition!
