Insects

Excursions in and around urban areas there is seldom a problem with mosquitoes. An excursion into rural or deeply wooded areas is about the only place you would possibly encounter them. The excursion that would fit the deep woods description in Panama would the excursion to the Embera Indians. While it is possible you could encounter a mosquito or two, it really is not a major concern. Mosquitoes are usually only active just before or just after sunrise/sunset and the time of year (the Dry Season) you will be traveling is not when the little buggers are particularly active.

We were on a full transit at the beginning of this year. Dutifully brought and applied (in some ports) insect repellent; never saw a mosquito. But I agree with Keith, bring repellent (and be sure it has either enough Deet or picaridin to be effective).

We had many annoying gnats all around the balcony during the transit...do NOT leave your balcony door open, or they will come in! Never saw mosquitoes....but we were in the canal (partial) during the daytime. At dawn and dusk, mosquitoes are a real possibility.
