What was your upgrade offer and what did you bid

They don't always wait until just two days before sailing to process bids. It usually seems to happen more in the 4-7 day range. And we've definitely seen some get processed a couple of weeks out. But Dave is right. They want to maximize their chances of getting someone to pay full price before accepting bids. I think that the trigger for bid acceptance is when they would have to lower prices on the remaining rooms in order to have any hope of filling them anyway. At that point, they might as well start accepting bids.

We'd never been offered to bid on an upgrade before but on June 15, for our Sept 3rd cruise, we got the email, I put in the minimum bid to go from an inside to a balcony ($75 pp) and heard last week our bid was accepted, so from a Deck 11 inside to a Deck 10 mid balcony, 7 weeks ahead of sailing. I didn't expect to hear that soon either, but others on our thread heard as well. :)I'm thinking the ship may be a bit empty;)

Have you checked to see if the prices for your sailing have since dropped? It seems to me that there is a pattern of bids being accepted early preceding a large price drop.

Heard about my Dawn sailing for 7/20, bidding from family suite with balcony to OS with 2 balconies. Bid 900 of the 1200 they wanted outright. Didn't get it. My bid was categorized as fair. But I'm happy where I am.

The family suites on 12 are perfect! Perfect location, perfect size! I was going to bid on the OS with 2 balconies but didn't like the location.

Today is 80 days out for my Mediterranean cruise on the Epic. I didn't receive an email but when I logged on there was an option to upgrade. I am booked through the casino program in an inside room that was free except for taxes, port fees and an admin fee. When I booked this they told me the upgrade charge to go to a balcony would be $650 per person, so of course I said no way. The Epic does not have oceanview rooms.

I have the option to bid on a balcony (Range: $75-450) or a mini suite (Range: $100-500). I bid poor on both. My current room is high and mid ship which is what I like. This is my 20th cruise and I've been in every type of room except Haven rooms. I'm ok with inside rooms, its easier to sleep in because of the darkness. Even when I have a balcony room I never spend more than 5-10 minutes day on my balcony. I'll update when I receive an accept or deny email.

What's not to like? They are at the front of the ship on 10, a beautiful huge room with a huge front balcony and a double wide side balcony vs. just a side balcony. 12 is a good location though and very quiet and close to pool and buffet though.

Agree :) Love the Family Suites BUT...the Owners Suites are our all time favorites!

Hello everybody. Has anyone ever heard of them rescinding the offer to upgrade? At exactly 80 days I did not get an email from NCL,but rather a link on my NCL page that said “let’s get you upgraded” I put in a few bids and I have been waiting to hear. I checked yesterday, because I check every day, and the “let’s get you upgraded”link is gone, the message in my messages is gone, and I have the same room that I had before. No email denying, no email accepting . Just simply as if they changed their mind. Has anyone heard of this? I am leaning towards the deny, because if I was upgraded they would’ve told me, but I was just wondering if this had ever happened to anybody else. I was in a balcony guarantee and my cabin was assigned about 10 days after I put my bids in. Actually I got a great cabin, so if they deny I am ok. The whole thing is just a little weird and I was looking to see what you all thought. Thanks!

I asked about the same issue several weeks ago on this site. I received an email and a “let’s get you upgraded” on my ncl page 80 days before sailing. It was removed a week later. I called NCL and was told it was a computer glitch and would be fixed. Nothing has changed after 2 weeks.

Mine also disappeared from the NCL site but I had the URL to my offers page and my bids are still there. I am sure it is just a glitch in the system but look at it this way, no one else can bid right now!

I can only imagine two possibilities here. Either they are processing upgrades right now so they have taken down the offer or there is some kind of technical glitch? You are supposed to be able to adjust your upgrade bid until the time that they are processed, so if they have intentionally removed your ability to adjust your bid and still haven't processed bids, that sounds pretty hinky.

The only way I know is to do "mock bookings" through the NCL web site. Go in and act like you are making a new booking for your sailing, go far enough in to where you get the room selection screed for your category, and see how many are still available. Things to note: when inventory gets low in certain categories, they will often switch to GTY, so you won't be able to see the available rooms in that category anymore. Also, the cabin selection screen will only show you the 15 "best" available rooms in a given category. So if there are more than 15 rooms left, there is no way to know how many more there are.

Thank you!

Hi Jamie. That’s what I thought. I can still access my emails that confirmed the bid placement so I can modify or cancel if I want. But I thought it was pretty “hinky” that they had just taken it away. I guess it’s just a waiting game. I will find out for sure in 55 days. 😊

Hello,

I appologize for what is likely a very repetitive question, but I don’t have the determination to dig through the 5000 previous post to find the help I need. The future wife and myself are going on the getaway for our honeymoon on October 7th and I just got the upgrade email. This is the first time I have received an upgrade email so I am new to the upgrade game. We are booked in a mini suite with large balcony and looking forward to this room but I would love to surprise her with an upgrade to the haven as we have both dreamed of sailing in the haven. The minimum bid for the base haven rooms is $400 per person. Just wondering what the minimum bid you would put in to have a decent chance at an upgrade. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

I personally can't sail in a very forward location. :(

The big question is would you both be happy in whatever location you ended up in for the particular category/categories you're bidding on? If you win NCL chooses your cabin. Also, what's the current cost difference between your mini suite and Haven?

The best way to judge what a good bid would be is to watch the capacity of the Haven cabins and see how many are still available several times per week. As the available number decreases, the bid needed to upgrade will most likely increase. However, as you get closer to your cruise date, if the category you are interested in is not selling, the price may drop to less than you bid. Just go ahead and buy the upgrade at that point to guarantee it. That is what happened to us. We were in the MS w/ large balcony, and I had bid $700pp for the Haven Courtyard Penthouse. The price on the haven rooms dropped to the point where it only cost me $740 TOTAL to just upgrade, instead of relying on a bid. It also allowed me to pick our cabin location, which is perfect!

As of right now, fewer than half of the Haven rooms on your sailing are booked. There are 41 of the 80 rooms available. With this being the case, I think you could be pretty conservative with your bids and put something in the "poor" range in each category you are interested in. As the sailing gets closer, keep an eye on both inventory and price. You can check each by looking up your sailing on NCL and doing a "mock booking" where you go through as if you are going to book a Haven room up to the point where it lets you choose your cabin location. Here are the current numbers of available rooms in each Haven category:

H9 - $2499 - 5/16 available

H7 - $2899 - 5/10 available

H6 - $2999 - 7/12 available

H5 - $2799 - 11/18 available

H4 - $3299 - 11/20 available

H3 - $4199 - 1/2 available

H2 - $5299 - 1/2 available

If you see the prices drop or rooms start to sell out, you can adjust your bids accordingly.

I love all the input from everyone. Let me ask, if I see that the haven is pretty much sold out on my sailing. As in only one cabin is available, would it be safe to say I should cancel my haven bids and keep the mini suite bid? There is a decent amount of mini suites left. I think I would make a terrible gambler. Lol.

I don't know why you would cancel your bids, unless you really don't want to risk getting the upgrade. There's no charge for a rejected bid. Worst case is they decline it. There's always a *chance* you could still win and get upgraded. If there are late cancellations, for instance.

I was thinking I would have a better chance at acceptance if I just bid on the one. I bid pretty low, so if the Haven is sold out at this point, I am thinking that even with a few cancellations that my odds are really low. This is why I said I would make a terrible gambler. I am indecisive when it comes to this stuff, hence why I am reaching out for advice.

I don't think bids in multiple categories will "hurt" you in your case. You are concerned that bidding on the Haven will negatively impact your chances of getting a mini-suite, correct? I don't think that would be the case. The more likely scenario would be that bidding on a mini-suite and a Haven(s) would negatively impact your chances of getting a Haven and here's why:

  • You bid on both a mini-suite and a Haven(s)
  • Another Balcony occupant bids the same amount as you or even slightly less on just Haven(s)
  • If NCL upgrades you to the mini-suite and the other passengers to the Haven, they get the money from BOTH bids. Plus they free up two Balconies for other bidders to move up into, versus just one.

But, in your case, it sounds like you are more likely to end up in a mini-suite anyway, with the Havens nearly sold out. So I think putting in a "what the hell" bid on a Haven isn't going to hurt anything.
