Mean & Nasty Passengers

I think, everybody is trying to squeeze as much as possible into their time. Iike a friend whom took a road trip in motorhome the family of four they drove up 500mile a day, ticking off a check list... it was like the griswolds but not as funny.

People forget how lucky they are to be able to go on a cruise ( like somebody else said ) and the fact that it is a holiday.... and I think that is way it is a holiday to some is to relax ( a cruise with lots of sea days ) to other it is to see new things, do new things ( like a river cruise ( moving hotel )) or stopping a new port everyday, up early rush off the boat and squeeze as much as they can do into the time a shore.

People on holiday sort of fall into three groups

Travellers , relaxed, go with flow , enjoy ( us )

Tourists sort of middle of the road try to do lots, then stopped at the bar for the afternoon

Terrorists, rush don't miss anything, do everything, push people out of the way to get there first ( the griswolds )

Mean and Nasty People are everywhere, simply don't let them get the better of you, and as that wonderful older lady say, now could you get me a gin and tonic.

Cheers Don... almost time for a G&T

We were just on Celebrity Summit for 14 days and didn't see one mean or nasty person, people were polite even in the elevators, and trivia was fun, and they happily used the hand sanitizer as well.............. we wonder what the difference is between Celebrity passengers and Princess ones?

We didn't really feel Celebrity was for us, but the politeness and food was way better than Princess recently.

We did Celebrity once and the food was inedible

I think that's what society has become nowadays. The internet has allowed everyone to be belligerent and get away with it and has translated into real life.

If the schedule says a 10:30 departure and we depart at 10:45 then it becomes a major incident with mandatory mega compensation and if you don't give me my way....we'll, you will be sorry.

Pool lounger hogs, buffet miners and my all time favorite- the people who don't let you out of the elevator... they just ram it in.

My tips for those types of passengers are to kill them with kindness. Once the other pax starts throwing f bombs, they have lost.

The best I encountered was with my 81 year old mom escorting her to the pool area. She slowly made her way up to the front row next to the pool. It was obvious that someone had just claimed about 10 chairs, spreading towels all over each chair.

My mom simply sat down on one of the loungers and laid back to enjoy the sun.

The nasty pool chair hogger walked up to my mom and very rudely told her that "I just put those towels down"!

Mom says "you did such a good job too be so kind and get me a gin and tonic please.

For the rest of the Hawaiian cruise she had a front row seat.

Kudos to your mom. I would have paid the cost of a cruise to see the hog's reaction.....:D:D:D

As you say, the food on Celebrity cab be even better than Princess on some cruises. We never had any complaints.

The most noticeable difference for us in the main dining room was that the beef was way better quality, no gristle like you get on Princess, and when we dined in the pay extra specialty restaurant ($22 on a deal) the steaks were the best I have ever had, cooked perfectly, no waste fat or gristle, flavorful yet tender.

And you could have as many entrees or anything else on the menu you wanted, in fact they encouraged you to do so.

The buffet also had more choice than most Princess ships, comparable to Majestic P which we were on earlier this year.

The Celebrity ship we were on was older, 2001 or so, but the buffet had been well refitted and modernized , and worked quite well, usual problem of not enough tables though but people were happy to share.

The demographic was mostly US seniors.

Since we haven't been on the Majestic I'm guessing it's similar to the Royal in size & layout for the buffet which has a hugh selection of items.

We found the food much worse on our 2017 Celebrity cruise compared to our 2016 cruise on the Regal. NO comparison in the buffet. Regal's was the best we've seen on any ship, period! The specialty rest. On the Eclipse, however totally blows away Crown Grill or Sabatini's. Due to Celebrity food quality being pretty poor in the MDR. we've skipped them this upcoming Jan. & are doing a 10 day trip on Oceania's Riviera, instead. We'll be on the Reflection in 2019. Hopefully the food quality will be better, or most certainly we'll try Princess again.

I convinced that the cook staff makes all the difference in the world. A good chef can work wonders with just basic ingredients.

Hi Everyone -

Thanks for your support.

My mom is the sweetest, funniest older person you'd want to meet. That's why I vacation with her - she is just awesome.

More Details -

We were at muster - we always get places early so we can have a seat (we've both cruised before many, many times - so we know what to expect). Anyhow, we were seated at the front and there was a railing in front of us. An "idiot" stood leaning against the railing with his butt in my moms face - she kindly asked him to move and he was extremely rude in his response to my mom so I told him to "Be nice that is my mom", he told me "Shut up Fat A**". The conversation descended from there. It was awful - both my mom & I tried to forget this experience but it's been hard. There were other encounters too. Simply awful.

Thanks for the support - much appreciated.

Muster is a high stress time. Many experienced and self-important passengers resent having to do the muster. I am handicapped and on chemo. I have been traveling with cancer for 10 years, and until my last cruise, there was no problem. At muster, there were no handicapped seats available because most of them were full of able bodied passengers who didn't want to descend the stairs. I pleaded for a seat. Some one told me where to get off. I passed out cold. It took three crew members and a wheel chair to get me back to my cabin. Really upset the staff.

This cruise I have a cane/seat so I can sit anywhere.

RE: CROWDING INTO AN ALMOST FULL ELEVATOR.

Aw, there is room for one more, just squish a little closer people.

Next time you are tempted to push into an elevator that is more than half occupied, consider: would you be willing to stand in there for 30 minutes? an hour? or even longer if the elevator malfunctioned? Happens. Just sayin'.

I think I would fake a panic attack afterwards.

It's worth at least $150 OBC. :D:D

My mom & I recently returned from a cruise to Alaska (Sept). I must say I was not happy with how many mean & nasty passengers we encountered. The crew could not have been nicer - just fellow passengers needed to learn some manners. I'm seriously considering never cruising again - as it was too hurtful to see my 80 yr old mom being spoken to in such disrespectful terms.

Too bad we can't implement a "test" to see if you can be nice to everyone you encounter before you are allowed to sail.

Thx for letting me vent.

I know what you are talking about. I am a very reasonable person and if I ever encounter a rude person or if they are rude to me I stand up for myself and tell them exactly where to go and I tell them exactly what will happen to them if they keep up their rude behaviour. It works all the time. I am also a black belt in karate and have practiced it for many years and feel I can read a person s body language fairly well. Generally if you look a bully in their eyes and lock eye contact with them and take a very confident tone and powerful tone of voice they will back down and retreat like the cowards that they are. A persons rude behaviour is normally just a personality facade to cover the fact that they are insecure cowards.

Was it elevator related? That’s my only problem. Why on earth would you try to get on a crowded full elevator?

Better yet, WHY would someone be so rude (and stupid) as too not let the folks on said FULL elevator off:eek: ?? I mean, I've seen idiots literally rush aboard (or try) a full elevator. I think next time, I'll give 'em a dose of their own medicine and the very second the doors open, RUSH into their faces, smile politely, and say, 'Oh? Excuseeeee me, were YOU trying to get on??' But, I probably won't, my Mom always taught me, 'IF you stoop to their level, then you're no better than they are.' But someone should have taught THEM it is polite to just wait 15-20 seconds to let people off.

There is no difference. The people on Princess were just as friendly as on Celebrity and there are just as many rude people on both. Food is subjective but I will take Princess over Celebrity any day. We were led to believe Celebrity was an upgrade over the Princess experience. Not so for us. We will still cruise Celebrity but our preference is still Princess.

I think that the most important thing to do when one comes across a mean and nasty individual, on a ship or otherwise, is to put it aside, not dwell on it, and move forward.

Why concern yourself overly with something that you cannot change or something that happened in the past? Better to move on and focus on all of the kind, generous, and interesting people that you can meet on a cruise ship....or anywhere else for that matter.

Maybe it's the cold weather, freezing out their gray matter!

In life, you will encounter both nice people and down right miserable folks.

For example...non cruise, I ride the New York Subway everyday, I now walk with a cane getting ready for TKR next week. I will meet people on the subway who offer me their seat, (I politely say thank you, cause I'm off in two stops). I also meet people who will knock me over rushing to get thru the turnstile, push me out of the way to get on the train; I just go with the flow; the good always outweigh the bad.

I am so sorry that you mother had to experience that!!!!:( I really wish I had been there to lend your mom some support and defense! PS I think I have a God-given gift for gently but firmly defending folks from this kind of brutish and disgusting behavior.

OK, now that IS awful and completely despicable. I absolutely can't believe there'd be any reason to be rude to an elderly woman and her adult child (I'd say 'daughter' if I knew that to actually be the fact). You're completely justified in writing about that here and I wouldn't blame you if you quit cruising. But of course you know, these folks can pop up anywhere in life and you still should live it as and when you please. It's the same re terrorists, to which mini-category I place your particular lout in. Please continue to enjoy your mom and your activities. You are normal. The other person is, um... not.

Cougaraz, the sweet thing works really well. Also, telling them "You all have a sparkling day now!" and "What part of New York did you say you were from?" They quiet right down.

I know I’ll catch hell for this, but the worst are from the east coast. Now I know many New Yorkers/New Jersey folks are lovely, but I’ve noticed that there are also some real jerks. Like the little old lady who literally pushed me to get in line at a tender, or the family who took our seats on the bus and scattered our belongings all over, or the woman who threw her garbage on the floor of the Sistine Chapel and then told me it wasnt hers when i politely picked it up and and said, “Excuse me, you dropped this.” Or the man who walked to the front of the line at the pursers desk and then made a scene because he was told he had to wait in line like everyone else.
