If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

What about two or three days in a row (sea days)? But even whole day can be tough without smoking for those who do.

I agree with all limits. Heck, even casino can be made smokeless, there are open air places or cigar clubs. But to prohibit it 100 percent on the ship is unfair.

No need for this to.

As I said we witnessed how it can be done right on Royal Princess. Very limited smoking zones, but they do exist.

On Princess now there are two places in the aft, really separated and many smoking free days in casino.
The problem, IMHO, with having some non-smoking days in a casino is that you still smell the smoke from the smoking days and the smell is something folks are trying to get away from.

As I said, casino can be non smoking, or better system installed. We were in Wynn casino in Vegas (smoking casino) and there were no smell at all.

Everything can be resolved with some effort. I bet smokers will agree not to smoke in casino rather than muss a cruise all together.

As for smoking in ports, we'll it doesn't work like that. It's not possible to smoke in advance. :)

I haven't seen much evidence that smokers won't gamble in a smoke free casino, whereas I have heard and read loads of comments from non smokers like myself, who won't venture into a casino where smoking is allowed. The smell is ingrained into the furnishings, so even the token smoke free nights are neither pleasant nor inviting.

From my observations on recent cruises, the numbers using the smoking areas are a small minority, but have a disproportionately large impact on the rest of the passengers. Perhaps the time is right for a brave and forward thinking cruise line to 'test the waters' and offer a non smoking cruise on a one off trial basis. From the comments on this thread, it sounds as if there would be plenty of interest. It would also be interesting to see what the casino profits would be like, given that more of us would be able to use that facility.

I suspect that those resist to change are rightly fearful that a smoke free cruise would prove to be very easy to fill, would show no loss of profit, and would have other cost benefits related to reduced cleaning and refurbishment costs, and the reduced risk of future litigation from staff adversely affected by occupational exposure to second hand smoke.

Please recall that the Casino on the Escape was smoke free for the first few weeks. From a customer satisfaction and casino operations perspective, it was a disaster. We were on the first voyage of the Escape after they lifted the smoking ban and were busy putting out ash trays throughout the casino.

No. NCL tired it. It was a failure. Not going back there any time soon.

I never been on Escape, but is it planned the same way as Breakaway?

We smoke occasionally, but really hated how smoke was spreading into other parts of atrium. Big mistake on their part. Now they have to install some very advanced system so other passengers including ones that don't gamble don't suffer. Also in some reason smoking place is situated near the pool, but designed like a booth (felt like a gas chamber). They could've created some secluded space in the aft, were both smokers and other people wouldn't have to suffer.

I don't actually think they tried it but rather they wanted to keep their newest ship smelling like that "new car" smell as long as possible for all the VIPs and travel agents etc. to see it all bright and shiny

Just using my industrial engineering brain here

1. Yes

2. No

I guess that's the same as most people's answer so far. I used to smoke myself, and although I don't want to be around it now, it's not a huge hassle for me. It's only ever in the casino and one end of a deck somewhere. I race through as quickly as I can and move on with my life. Heck, on one cruise, I sat at the casino bar and just put up with it (the other bars that were open were unappealing, and it was interesting to watch the casino action)--you can get kind of nose blind after a bit, anyway.

It'd be easier if they just shunted the casino action out of the way to avoid the smoke, but they don't want to do that because they want to tempt people. Maybe a compromise would be to have the main casino room in its own space but have some casino action--non-smoking only--where people would walk by. But you know, that just gets into complicated issues of ship design. It's not my thing.

Like most have said, I am yes/ no

I agree with a few of the posters who noted that the amount of smoke on ships has decreased dramatically over the past several years. I remember when ships used to be floating ashtrays, this has improved so much. The casino is still smokey but that's true of most casinos.

What makes you say that smoke free would save them money? If NCL thought that then don't you think they would already be doing it? It is obviously NCLs thought process that allowing smoking makes them the most money. If smoking was prohibited then they would lose revenue from people who will stop cruising. And even if they banned smoking from "all" indoor areas where "all" is just the casino and the cigar lounge then they would lose money from smokers not gambling. I'm sure NCL has much stats on this topic.

Lower cleaning costs.

Maybe attract those who would come if there was no smoking ?

Celebrity seems to do OK with its policies which apply worldwide as far as I know.

(Just for perspective, DW & I quit in 1984 when we decided $8/carton was too much !

Nicorette gum, then in its introductory formulation, made it possible, in fact made it easy).

This will change. I live in a place with a smoking ban. The casinos have expanded multiple times. Smokers will choose the smoking option but without a smoking option, they will still gamble.

One day, the cruise lines will catch up and ban smoking or create a better way to separate it. I dont mind a smoking area but it can be awful for those of us who do not smoke and live in smoke-free cities.

You are wrong there, I live only a few minutes from Empire city and I can count on one hand how many times I have gone there. You wanna know why I do not go there? Because I cannot smoke while I am gambling. Simple as that.

You are correct that smokers won't gamble in a smoke free casino, because I will not go to a smoke free casino in the first place. I will go to a casino that I can.

Does anyone remember that 2.4 Billion dollar non smoking experiment called the "Revel"? I do.

Yes, no

I thought the proportion of smokers was greatly reduced now and smokers were a minority group?

If so the number of smokers not going on cruises wouldn't be that big and non smokers who hate smoke and who don't go on cruises may take up the smokers numbers.

I do think that vapours (fake cigarettes) should be allowed inside. And if there was a non smoking cruise ship I think the fake cigarettes should be allowed.

Yup....I purposely reduced dsc by an amount I felt reflexed the lack of rule enforcement by that waiter

I as a paying pax had to leave the sun deck because someone was smoking there and the waiter continued to serve her.

Totally justified in the removal. And ncl now knows exactly why I did it Which is the real point.

So with huge multi-level sun decks you can use but you removed DSC because someone was smoking within your vicinty? Ain't that special?

Please no. Some of the flavors are just awful. This could work only if they had to be unflavored.

Yes but I think overpowering aftershave or perfume is worse😫 some people don't know what moderation is 😉

I think many non smokers just do not understand that. When we were on HAL a few years ago, same with Princess, they had a night or two of NON SMOKING casino play. The casino was almost empty. As an x smoker, I understand both sides, but I don't think many realize how hard it is to go from smoking to being a non smoker.
