If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

I think this topic is fascinating. In short, my answer would be no and no. My fear is that such bans would be the end of cruising as we know it. Cruising is about escaping the everyday world where people judge one another, gang up on those not like them, and where we can go to just get away, live, explore and celebrate different lands and different people. With this must come a willingness to be open and accepting of differences. Some people are sensitive to perfume. Should we ask for the banning of fragrances and gift shops that sell them? Some families have been devastated by alcoholism. Should we seek the banning of adult beverages? Some people are diabetic. Should we persecute those enjoying a desert? Many have high blood pressure. Should we demand salt free menus for all? Smoking is bad for people... as is sugar, fat, salt, plastic, stress, and negativity. I will keep cruising with an open mind and open heart - and HOPE that doesn't get taken away from me.

The problem with smoking is that it causes health harm to the people who have to breathe in the smoke. The other things you mentioned aren't likely to cause health impact to other cruisers.

Secondhand perfume doesn't kill anyone. Secondhand smoke kills over 7,000 non-smokers a year in the US.

Sitting next to a person drinking isn't harmful. Sitting next to a smoker can be harmful and possibly fatal.

The eating habits of others doesn't harm my health. The smoking habits of others does harm my health.

Smoking kills not only the smoker but the non-smokers around the smoker. A sugar junkie, salt junkie, stressful or negative person doesn't harm me if I am sitting next to them. As for your "open heart", secondhand smoke causes nearly 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease each year in the United States among nonsmokers. - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Your stats are misleading. They are mostly based on hugely prolonged second hand smoke for example living with someone who smokes. Not for the casual person who happens to walk by someone smoking outside. Not to detract from the real problem of second hand smoke but let's keep it in perspective.

"There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke." - CDC

"Exposure to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and can cause coronary heart disease and stroke." - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services/Washington: National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, 2010

"Even brief exposure to secondhand smoke can damage the lining of blood vessels and cause your blood platelets to become stickier. These changes can cause a deadly heart attack." - CDC

"Even brief secondhand smoke exposure can damage cells in ways that set the cancer process in motion" - U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

I guess we all agree, that smokeless casino, but separated outside zones for smokers (but not those horrible with plastic walls)

Smokeless meaning good smoke removing capabilty or no smoking allowed? No smoking allowed in casino-I wouldn't cruise on that ship.

I'm not denying your stats. But there is a huge difference between briefly being next to someone smoking outside vs a more prolonged exposure indoors like living with someone.

How does smoking affect others? In my case burning eyes, a very sore throat and generally feeling like I am getting a cold. Miserable!

Fortunately I don't gamble and I can avoid the casino but for those that want to enjoy the casino it would he impossible for people that's sensitive to smoke!

Obviously, prolonged exposure is worse than limited exposure. Even limited exposure is detrimental to the health of non-smokers.

Some people continue to treat secondhand smoke as "an annoyance" like cheap perfume is an annoyance. Secondhand smoke is toxic and contains chemicals that have been proven to cause cancer. No cheap perfume has that kind of resume.

It is erroneous for people to believe that if people aren't dropping dead right on the spot, secondhand smoke isn't deadly. People who are non-smokers are dying because of exposure to secondhand smoke.

The problem is with the BA and other similar designed ships in the ncl fleet.....

That the casino and its smoke just can't be avoided

Additionally even if someone argues that the casino on deck 7 can be avoided....the venues on deck 6/8 will also be mostly off limits to those trying to avoid the smoke from the casino

So to avoid the smoke from this new and ridiculous open air casino design a pax must avoid all the venues in the 6/7/8 atrium area.

Not true about second hand perfume. As an asthmatic, I can categorically tell you how toxic this is to me and other people with chronic pulmonary disease and can in fact trigger an asthma attack which can end up in death. Please, please keep this in mind.

The perfume didnt cause the condition. Secondhand smoke causes heath problems for non-smokers.

Yes, people with existing conditions would be more susceptible to perfume. People without an existing condition are susceptible to secondhand smoke.

The facts don't lie...very eye opening and scary how many people are put at risk due to someone else's habit. Thanks for the info.

Even if an alternative is not cruising? I would cruise.

I wouldn't cruise if ship won't have any smoking zones though.

I cannot smoke like a chimney in port in advance. If I drink I need to smoke. I can use outside zones and then gamble.

Really??? https://betobaccofree.hhs.gov/health-effects/secondhand-smoke/

So much research has proven it. But, you are right, you have every right to your own opinion.

I'm there with the facts and my father smoked profusely and I had breast cancer so.... there are many cancers that we aren't sure if their initial origin.

Maybe I'm crazy but how does this really mean all of the non smokers will be able to enjoy their balconies without the smoke? If I'm reading policy correctly,if a smoker in a balcony cabin is willing to pay the $250 fine then they are technically still free to smoke on their balcony right?

No. Smoking on the balcony is a violation of the Guest Conduct Policy. There are exceptions such as "Guests in the Garden Villas may smoke in their private garden and on their private sun decks."

The $250 fine would be just the beginning....

FAILURE TO ACT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS POLICY MAY RESULT IN:

  • Intervention by Security, other management personnel or law enforcement
  • Removal of certain onboard privileges, which may include being detained, quarantined or confinement
  • Confiscation of illegal/contraband/prohibited items (may be turned over to law enforcement authorities) and used for prosecution
  • Denial of boarding on the current or any future Norwegian Cruise Line cruise vacation
  • Reporting of incidents to government and law enforcement authorities for follow-on legal action
  • Removal from ship at the next port-of-call. Guests removed from a Norwegian Cruise Line ship pursuant to this policy, are responsible. Documentation requirements for re-entry into the guest’s home country are also the responsibility of the guest.

1. Yes

2. Yes - due to health issues for hubby and kids

Seems everyone would be happy on an all smokers or all nonsmokers cruise! Logistically I do think see that happening...but it's a hypothetical question right? If smoking was banned on cruising wonder how many would pay more for a smoking cruise?
