Genoa - State of Emergency

Following the catastrophic bridge collapse in Genoa yesterday, a State of Emergency has been declared for at least 12 months.

Although the lives lost in the disaster are of greater concequence, if you are embarking, disembarking or visiting Genoa, the transport and infrastructure is going to be greatly impacted for a considerable time. Travel to and from the port will be increased and anyone travelling will need to factor in additional travelling time.

A devastating and sad day for the City.

That's sad. Reminds me of the I-35W bridge collapse we had here about 11 years ago, in Minnesota.

Having seen the photos taken a few weeks ago of the bridge supports, I cannot Believe they were allowing traffic to cross the bridge.

A sad day for the families of all those who died and needless.

Will cruise ships still go to this port? Will the infrastructure situation change what tours might tours will be available?

There are no reports suggesting that the port or airport are closed, so no reason ships would not dock. Travelling to and from these locations will obviously be more difficult and more time will need to be allowed. The same would presumably apply to tours in the areas.

There are other roads fron the Airport to the Port.

What a frightening and tragic thing to have happened. Just watching BBC news--36 people confirmed dead so far. My heart goes out to the families .

I contacted MSC's PR department yesterday to ask about what the bridge collapse means in terms of shore excursions, availability of taxis at the port and passenger ability to travel between the port and surrounding airports. This is the official statement I was given:

We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred in Genoa yesterday, 14 August. The collapsing of the Morandi Bridge is a tragedy and our thoughts go out to the victims, their families and loved ones as well as to the entire City of Genoa.

We are constantly monitoring the situation on site and we are in close contact with the local authorities, ground service operators and our colleagues in Genoa.

At this point, our upcoming calls on Saturday 18th (MSC Opera and MSC Divina) and on Sunday 19th (MSC Fantasia and MSC Seaview), are all scheduled to take place as planned. The excursions that are planned in and around Genoa this weekend (mostly to Portofino and in town), are currently not affected.

We are currently expecting to receive an updated road traffic plan which will be issued by the authorities shortly.

We are advising guests travelling by road into (or out of) Genoa to take additional travel time into consideration. Alternative routes are available, though traffic delays are likely on surrounding highways, including those serving Genoa. We are advising to take an additional 2 hours of travel time into account.

We will keep our guests informed either directly or via our trade partners. We will also provide regular updates via our website www.msccruises.com

In this type of situation, all cruiselines will over react regarding travel times.

We have driven that road (several times) while driving between southern France and Italy). The route that runs near the coast has an incredible number of tunnels and roads built on high supports (similar to what you saw collapse in Genoa). We always marveled at the amazing engineering it took to construct these roads, tunnels and bridges and sometimes wondered about the maintenance. The fall out from this bridge collapse is likely to be huge....and we fear it will negatively impact transportation for many years.

We were on the Divina for the Saturday 18th stop. If I hadn't seen it on the news I would have never known about it- nothing was said to the passengers and it seemed like business as usual at the port.

We arrived today in Milan (MXP) and the GPS navigation suggested Autostrada A26 to Genoa. A26 took us from the west into Genoa. We saw 2 closed roads leading to A10, where the bridge collapsed, but no detour or heavy traffic on our route on Saturday afternoon. Will drive tomorrow (Sunday) to port and expect no delays after talking to local hotel staff.
