Some thoughts as someone who had never cruised on a Dream class ship before

Embarkation

First cruise with the new system of leaving your card in your mailbox. I’ll say last year at the same port with the old system, embarkation took me over an hour. This time the check-in time was 11:30-12. Arrived 11:30 or a little earlier and was on the ship before12. They sent out an email saying to arrive an hour later than your check-in time which I ignored. I don’t know if less people were there because of the email or if this is the new norm but it was easily the best embarkation I’ve had. There was some kind of a delay for the early boarders so I was actually on the ship under general boarding no more than 15 mins after the FTTF people.

Steward was one of the best I’ve had. I’ve gotten used to them asking about the once a day/twice a day service. So I thought I’d make it easy on her. I just told her evening is fine..before she even asked. She still gave twice a day service. It’s possible she wasn’t going to ask at all.

I wish the walkway through the casino went to the side of the casino as it did in older ships. The Lanai around deck 5 is great but I wish there was a spot to step out onto it before you reach the casino (fwd to aft) so that people who don’t like the smoke could use it as a way to avoid the casino.

The area on deck 4 going around the MDRs was great. Used it a lot to get from one end of the boat to the other quickly. There were rarely people down there...particularly at night.

Coffee shop had three workers. On previous cruises I’ve seen 1-2 workers and they really struggled when it was just one. This line moved so fast...lines that would normally be a 10-15 min wait on other ships...I was out of there in less than 5.

There is no sports bar but I’m okay with that because they basically made the casino bar into a sports bar. Plenty of TVs and sports on all of them...Red Frog Pub also like a Sports bar.

I’m not a big fan of the alchemy location in the ocean plaza. There’s a band playing there most of the time. You can’t hear anyone. The vibe is just totally different. I’m sure this is a business decision because the bands used to play by the casino bar and alchemy bar drinks generally cost more than casino bar drinks.

I don’t like the trivia/games location of the ocean plaza because the only bar there is alchemy which doesn’t open until 3pm on sea days or 5pm on port days.

On my last few cruises I got used to the blue iguana tequila bar having corona on tap. That would be my drink of choice on Mexico day. BI tequila bar has no taps on breeze for some reason. I’m sure you can still get it there but I prefer draft beer..

I don’t like the atrium stage being above the bar instead of behind it. If you’re sitting at the bar you can’t see the stage. Wasn’t a problem for me because I spent the least amount of time in this atrium of all cruises since there was rarely anything going on there.

They closed down the nightclub one night for a crew party. Not a fan of that.

Food was great for the most part. Didn’t eat any meals in the buffet. MDR for dinner every night and brunch on all sea days. Blue iguana cantina for breakfast burritos on port days. I only had one Guys burger which is unusual.

Cucina del Capitano replaced most of those burgers....loved that place. I think it took awhile for most people to figure out where it was and that it had an included lunch because most of the week it was empty. Then the last two days it was loaded. Tried several different combinations of their pasta...and had their lasagna which I really liked.

Had pig and anchor once and didn’t care for it. Somewhere in there I managed to try three sandwiches from the new deli menu. I had a Cuban, a Reuben, and a meatball. All were pretty good. Cuban was my favorite of the three. Pizza is the same as always but this pizza place has heat lamps now and they may try to stick you with an old pizza that has been sitting under a lamp for awhile.

Tried the thrill theater once. Did the “all the rides” one expecting it to be like you’re in roller coasters, airplanes, water slides, etc. It was 15 minutes broken into three parts. The first part was that cartoon coyote. And it was just a whole bunch of jerking you around when he falls off a cliff or dynamite goes off..really annoying after a couple bloody marys. The second part had flying but it was more like you watching others fly...not so much making it seem like you are flying. The last part was a roller coaster and was probably the best thing about it. If I tried it again I’d sit in the front row because sitting in the back you could see the 3D images coming through the heads of the people in the front row. Would’ve liked to have tried the scary one but it was only at night during a main and/or comedy show.

Debarkation

Always do the relaxed debarkation. Slept in till 8am..out of the room at 8:30. Grab coffee, breakfast burrito, then wait. Zone 9 scheduled to debark at 10am. All of self assist people were called by 9:15. We were called at 9:36 and in line to get off the ship at 9:38..Through customs at 10:10 and in the car at 10:33.

Parking

Last year I used ez parking. This time I went with lighthouse covered. It took about 20 mins to get back to the lot. Most of that was waiting for the shuttle to fill up. Some of it was because we dropped people and luggage at the uncovered parking lot before going to the covered parking lot. I don’t know what the benefit of the covered is. I guess it would protect if there’s a hailstorm. But my car is disgusting after sitting in that covered lot for a week. Maybe I’ll take a closer look at the indoor lots next time...or just go with uncovered parking. The cover didn’t do much good. My hood was shiny black when I parked. Now it’s covered in some sort of yellow film.

A couple of things I forgot

I really like the way you can check your account balance on the hub app instead of going to a kiosk. The one time i needed a kiosk was when I wanted to apply a gift card to my account. I went to two different kiosks and they wouldn’t allow you to enter all of the numbers. So I went to guest services and had them apply the gift card to my account. When I’ve done this before I’ve applied whatever is left to a future cruise. I should’ve had $26 left on that card after my account was settled. I just checked the balance and it’s $0. So I’ll be calling carnival tomorrow on that.

TV stations. I don’t know what kind of bootleg TV package they’re using now...but if you don’t want to watch the 20 carnival cruise/travel/deck cam channels...or the 4 CNN channels or the 2 cartoon channels...that leaves you with TBS, TNT, TCM, and Tru TV. It was weird because you would have a 30 min tv program that would skip commercial breaks. It would have just one commercial break and the commercials would be in Spanish. Then sometimes the programming would have Spanish sub titles. Then sometimes late at night the programming itself would be in Spanish.

You’d come in at night and TCM (Turner Classic Movies) would have cricket on...or Russian ice motorcycle racing. Sometimes the shows would have a box on the screen that wouldn’t go away.

So what two nights were formal night so you could have the lobster? We want to eat in the steak house one night but do not want to miss both formal nights? TIA

I posted the menus...but the first sea day had lobster. The other formal night didn’t have lobster. I had the filet mignon that night.

Saint Greg, thank you for all the info. Did you get any kind of embarkation letter saying it would be delayed. We board Sunday and several people have received a letter saying it will be delayed. And some got letters that doesn’t say anything about a delay.

Thanks so much for your review. Did you happen to get any shots of the bar menu? Curious on current pricing.

I didn’t. Didn’t seem like much of a change. My bloody Mary’s were coming up at 10.25. I thought those used to be less but maybe they were on special those times. Alchemy drinks 10.95. Frozen drinks 8.50. I feel like cocktails like the cruiser went from 8.95 to 9.25. 16 oz import beers 6.50. Draft beers 5.75.

Great review. I remember on the TV they would show 2 movies and then the next day they would change movies. This used to be listed on Fun Times with the TV listings but I couldn't fine it. Thank you.

They did have that free movie channel but anytime I looked it had weird stuff on it...nothing I recognized.
