Oahu-Waikiki Traffic - What to Avoid When renting a car

Planning on renting a car for one day in Waikiki to explore the North Shore and some other places. What time of day is best to avoid the traffic? Would like to explore the North Shore, Dole Plantation, Iolani Palace, & the Punchbowl. Staying at the Ohana East for 4 days but only interested in a car for a single day. Is this doable? I know that many of the rental offices close at 2PM - so we would pick it up around 8:30 AM, and keep it until the following morning. Any advise and suggestions are greatly appreciated. We were in Hawaii in 2014 for a 13 night Royal cruise, but did not rent a car.

Thanks!

You will be going opposite the commuter traffic, which goes into Honolulu in the morning and out in the afternoon, so it shouldn't be too bad. You can always check apps like Waze and the local TV like KHON for traffic updates. Radio station 96.3 FM and others also have traffic reports. Accidents and road work can create unexpected delays and there often aren't good alternatives on the island. Parking can be an issue at the Punchbowl Cemetery but normally OK, same with the Palace (buy tickets in advance). Entrance access was just improved at Dole Plantation so there is less traffic congestion now in that area.
