Vancouver island 😜. I’ve never seen an itinerary like that. Very interesting I’m surprised you can circle the island in a day. It’s 730 nautical miles around. I wonder if the map is misleading.

I just looked at the itinerary and it is a FOUR day cruise. That makes more sense.

I am assuming the map and schedule are correct:

therefore, 32 hours from May 9 11:59 pm (Victoria) to 8 am May 11(Vancouver) to circumnavigate Vancouver Island.

730 nautical miles in 32 hours: even if Seymour Narrows cooperates, still a fast sail.

Very ambitious with the last 10 hours of the inside passage in the dark which kind of defeats the whole purpose.

I dont think the math works. This would exceed 21 knots. Not going to happen that I can see. Maybe they have studied the current atlas more than I have and get a positive push for 32 hours but I doubt it.

Interesting on a TA website it has a totally different map that doesn't go around the island. I will stay tuned with interest to get clarification.

My very first cruise in 2010 ish was scheduled as this exact itinerary. HAL oversold the cruise and offered us a 7 day Alaska as an exchange. We took the 7 day. I haven’t seen it offered since then and I have been looking. I may have missed it but it’s not a normal itinerary.

When I saw this cruise on a TA website, I saw the map that showed it not going around the island. My daughter tends to get seasick so I thought that it would be a great cruise for her. I called HAL and booked it. After I booked the cruise I noticed on HALs website that they showed a map showing that it was going around the island. I have no idea which is correct but I guess we will find out soon :)

Please report back, I’m really curious if it can be done.

We booked this cruise, as the itinerary and the full day in ports was what we were looking for. I think it has been sold out since January. It will be interesting to see how the day at sea (inside passage) plays out. I have no doubts that it will be an awesome cruise.

This thread is interesting to those of us on the 2018 Grand Asia because HAL just added the 2-day and 5-day tour from Seattle-Victoria-Vancouver-San Francisco to our 82-day cruise, making it 89 days. We were speculating as to whether the 2 and 5-day cruises from Seattle were not selling well (or maybe the Grand Asia was not selling well). The four-day cruise was sold out in January, but the 2-day and 5-day ad-on cruises are late September, which might have made a difference in bookings. Thoughts?

I am booked on that cruise around Vancouver Island. If it does not circle the island I will be disappointed indeed.

The more I think about it, I will also be upset if we do not go around the island due to all of the scenery that we will be missing. I already told my daughter that she may feel a bit ill the first night on the west side of the island but after that it should be smooth sailing and gorgeous scenery on the east side. We were looking forward to that and it looks like we will be missing quite a bit of it. Don't take me wrong, I'm still super excited.

If it does circle the island, you'll see less - much less. Nobody sails close to shore on the west coast of Vancouver Island - BIG waves (it's a storm-watching and surfing hotspot) and lots of 'sticky out bits' so coming remotely close to shore means going slow and careful - and there's simply no time for that on the itinerary. You'll be out in international waters, seeing nithing but waves & sky, burning cheap diesel and with casinos open to help pay for running the engines full-bore!

If it does go up the inside, you'll be in Canadian waters, nice views all the time, lots of little islands as well as the true inside passage. Not circling the island is the best thing they could do for you from both a comfort AND enjoyment perspective. I hope for the sake of everyone on the cruise that the map is incorrect!
