New Orleans in August

Planning on sailing the Triumph out of New Orleans in August. Prior to the cruise, we will be staying in New Orleans for a few days. Someone we spoke to seemed surprised that we would go there in August, but that is the only time we can go. Not planning on changing the trip, but just looking for some feedback on stuff going on in the city during that time. TIA.

We cruised out of New Orleans last August. It was hot and very humid. Nothing going on at that time, the end of August except for the hurricane remnants. We were very lucky but it did make me hesitant about booking another cruise during the summer.

We've sailed out of New Orleans in August... It's hot (just like Cozumel is lol)

Don't know if you are driving or flying in. Parking is always difficult in New Orleans, all your hotels in the French Quarter / Downtown area have a surcharge for parking, usually Valet about $40 per night.

New Orleans is our favorite port to sail from! So much to do and see.

Here are my suggestions:

1.) take a trolley ride out to the Garden District & back

2.) The Quarter: If you like to drink, they have several shops that have all these icy machines with about 20 machines with all kinds of alcoholic drinks. Our favorite is the Miami Vice (half frozen Strawberry daiquiri half pina colada)

3.) Go to Pat O'Briens for a Hurricane. You will want to see the flaming fountain there.

4.) Jackson Square

5.) Take a cheap Haunted tour. You walk around the quarter and they tell you all the stories) The cemetery tour is also interesting, will learn a bit about how voodoo came about

Places to Eat:

The best place to get a Muffuletta at the Central Grocery on Decatur St for lunch It's where they were first made... and they are huge!

Acme Oyster House (be prepared to wait in line)

Deanies on Iberville is good too but $$$

For cheaper good meal go to Daisy Dukes... open 24 hours

You have to go to Café Du Monde at Jackson Square for beignets! Great place to go after a late night on Bourbon st. We also found that early mornings are really nice. No long lines, ( Sunday's parking on the street is free)

Since August is a slow time of year in New Orleans there are a lot of bargains available. Hotels are cheap (if there are no large conventions in town), restaurants have lots of specials and it is less crowded.

Ocean Spirit has a lot of great info for someone who is not local to have. Pat O'Brien's is a must and go ride the Carousel Bar at the Monteleon Hotel for some more great drinks.

It's hard to find a bad restaurant in New Orleans but if you are on a budget, stop at a Brother's gas station to get some of the best fried chicken at lowest prices.

It's going to be hot and humid in August. Depending on your August sail dates, the Saints will be playing 2 preseason games at home on 17th and 30th of august. Hot and humid. French Quarter will be busy, and traffic will be a concern. Did I mention it will be hot and humid? 90+ degrees and humidity to match.

This might be of interest. We have been during restaurant week, which I think is typically during September, but some of these restaurants could be fun.

The Aquarium and the WWII museum are excellent indoor activities.

Don't know where you are from, but Cajunfla has the right idea, if you aren't from around the Gulf Coast or a tropical climate, it is hard to understand just how hot and sticky and stinky it will be. Stay hydrated if you are walking around. Rain will begin to taper off in August unless there is a tropical storm or hurricane, and you might not be there in that case anyway, LOL. Even though there is less rain in August than July, you might want to keep umbrella handy and plan on ducking into a bar during a downpour - it is subtropical and when it rains, it can be a deluge.

Snow Cones are a thing. If you get to Magazine Street, go to Mahoney's and have a po-boy with onion strings on the porch and a Sno-Cone from across the street for dessert.

NOLA is arguably the best restaurant city in America, so enjoy.

You can Google things like directory of festivals and the top places to eat historic places to eat and drinks that originated from New Orleans. Expect the devil to be out of town because it'll just plain be too hot for him
