texas holdem question

My husband enjoys playing Texas Holdem. We were just on the Crown Princess earlier this month. He had a great time playing poker in the casino. The Crown's casino only has one automated table that holds up to 10 players. You can play a $1/2 cash game most every night. There also were several tournament games throughout the cruise. You had to sign up at a specified time the day before and as seating was limited only the first 10 to sign up got to play. Needless to say, there were others that wanted to play that did not get to. My husband, who hates to travel, had such a good time on the Crown that he wants to cruise again soon. I am wondering if anyone can tell me which cruise line's casinos are better set up for poker? I am looking for more tables, mabie live dealers, etc.

Take him to Vegas...it's MUCH better than a cruise ship for poker! And, you'll get a better room , and better food! Plus, the gambling experience!

I mean, I love cruising, but it's not the best place to gamble! Vegas (from late March to Late Oct.) has WONDERFUL weather, and right now, the prices are LOW! They are actively courting folks to stay in their hotels....check out LVOL.com...and pick a good hotel and enjoy! Vegas ROCKS!

I agree with CB. However, just for information: just about all of the cruise lines now have the computerized poker table. They normally have 1/2 or 3/5 games. I saw no limit on Carnival when I was there a while back - something you don't normally see on the ships. Regardless, it's pretty much the same in every casino...

I am booked on the NCL Dawn leaving March 12 and I read they have live dealers which is alot better than those machines, I am looking forward to playing on board, I also heard people bring cards and set up their own live games...I can not wait to get onboard

Vegas and Atlantic city is great, however the cruise ships allows you to play the game, enjoy the shows, see the islands, enjoy the warm weather, great food etc., so for dollar for dollar I can understand how your husband had such a great time. I have been on the Princess, Norwegian,Carnival and played poker and they were great. However, I almost won a free cruise on the Royal Caribean, The Explorer of the Seas, playing poker. Most of the cruise ships are great, because they realize that this game is popular with the passengers. Royal Caribean however seems to have the best set up for the game, but it is hard to get a seat on any of them. I have sailed seven times and never seen a live dealer yet.

I just finished an NCL cruise on the Jewel. There were 3 Texas hold'em tournaments held during the 7 day cruise. All used live dealers on the one hold'em table and blackjack tables.

The first tourney was the first day at sea. It was $100 buy-in, with $100 unlimited re-buys, and a $100 add-on for 2000 starting chips. There were 4 tables of seven. It was an ultra-fast tourney with the blinds starting at 100/200. First two levels were the re-buy levels and were 30 minutes each. After second level the add-on was 4000 tournament units. Every level from then on was 15 minutes. Paid 3 spots, 50%, 30%, 20% after the House took their 25% rake. First place would have paid $2150 but six people cut a deal, two big stacks split first ($1050) and other four split second and third ($525). Dealers were given the a nice tip from the pot first. I was one of the four (YES!!).

Second and Third tourney were same format with $60 buy-in, re-buys, and add-on. Second tourney was the other day at sea and the third one was held on the day the ship was at NCL's private island at Great Stirrup Cay.

So you cut a deal to give up a chance to win $2150 for $262.50 minus dealer tip and buy in?

FYI to all poker fans. We just came of Royal Carribean Navigator of the Seas. They had a live 2/5 No Limit game every night in the casino. Usually got started around 9 and went until 2AM. I had read so much about the computerized tables that I was surprised but happy when I found they ran a live game.

Rake was still terrible but I would rather have the cards in my hands if I am going to pay it out.

Take him to Vegas... (from late March to Late Oct.) has WONDERFUL weather.
I live here and I think you have that a bit bassackwards. The BESt Vegas weather is October and November and February through mid June. June 15 - September is TOO hot. Back when I used to work 8p - 4a there were mornings when I got off work in July and August when it was 100 degrees at 4:00 am. That is NOT WONDERFUL my friend. Great room rates are available year round now. Go here for any questions you have about Las Vegas' poker rooms.

Just returned from a cruise on Caribbean Princess ( Carnival). No one in the casino seemed to know/tell the rake on their electronic Texas Hold'em table so I called Carnival on my return. Ouch !

Caribbean Princess was a whopping 15% $8.00 max and Carnival boats are 15% with a $10 max.

Talk about your captive audience!

Guess I'll stick to Craps and Blackjack in the future!

NCL has the worst rake ever, 10% up to $25 in their live dealer cash game. I refused to play for the first 3 nights on my first cruise last year. Then I realized that when the table was full that only 2, maybe 3 were OK players. The rest were just horrible. I hit and ran once or twice a night and made at least 1/2 of my buy-in($500) every time. There is no way a good player should ever play in such a high rake game, but it was just too easy to make money. The tournaments were the same players with some others who just wanted to "try" a poker tourmanent. It really was not fair to these people, but they put up their money, so.....

Overall, I have had more fun playing poker on cruises than anywhere else I have played(Vegas, AC, NE). The atmosphere is unlike any game I have played in, fun. Oh yeah and very, very soft.

Two years ago we took an NCL European cruise and they had live dealers every night for both tournaments and cash games. While I consider myself a decent player, there was one player who probably was a professional (in fact heard he makes a living playing from cruise to cruise). While I & others determined it, we still wanted to try our skills against him. Forget it, he won 2 of 3 tournaments and placed 2nd for the 3rd. I admit my ego got into the way & should have passed on playing. PS I did make it to the final table (there were 3 full tables each time) 2x but didn't win. I did ok in the cash game. Good luck.

The rack on live poker no limit hold em is not high, it's very high. Also, remember we are on intl waters so the rules of poker that apply in Vegas and Atlantic city may be over looked on ship games. Had to kindly ask for a pit review a couple of times and the hand was corrected.
