Sakaiminato on your own

We have traveled extensively through Japan over the years but are doing our first cruise next April around Japan and over to Alaska. I have been able to research most places and plan my own thing for the ports in Japan but have found very limited information on Sakaiminato. It appears that we would have to get a taxi into the town. Has anyone cruised into this port recently and if so were there shuttles? There are only 3 ship excursions available and none of them are really of interest. Any ideas?

We have also been looking for information. I found a cruise review by drsheryl for the Fantastic Festivals of Japan in August 2016 and she stated:

Sakaiminato: The Diamond Princess docks at Showa south warf with complimentary shuttle to Sakaminato station.

Starting this year, Princess has started charging $5-10 for the previously free shuttles. My favorite place to go from this port is definitely Adachi Museum & Gardens: https://www.adachi-museum.or.jp/en/. They run a free shuttle from Yasugi Station: https://www.adachi-museum.or.jp/en/shuttle_bus

Another nice area to visit is the nearby island of Daikonjima. There you can visit Yuushien Gardens. http://www.yuushien.com/yuushien/language/english.html

Matsu Castle is quite nice too. http://www.kankou-shimane.com/en/?p=649 Check out my page for other free info on how to explore Japanese ports independently.

We were in Sakaiminato in August. If you are on Princess, there will be a shuttle into the town. The drop-off is close to the Sakaiminato Station and a few blocks from the Mizuki Shigeru Museum. The offered excursions are not very exciting. We went on the Tottori Flower Park because of mobility issues with in-laws. It was boring. There is a modern art museum, Mizuki Museum. Hinomisake Shrine, Isumo Grand Shrine, Matsue Castle, Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and Yushien Garden.

You might want to research some of the above sites. We were in port from 10 am to 8 pm. The best part of this port was the send off we received from the city. I think we just got lucky and were there during a festival, that took place on the pier.

I hope this information might help.
