i've done plenty of cruises with my family. now i'm planning a solo cruise on ncl gem. does the gem offer a group dining table for solos' or single seating if i prefer?

You can always get a table for yourself. But table sharing I haven't had much luck with. However, in my experience, the solo host most of the time will arrange for a table(s) at the solo/single at the nightly get together which is held every night somewhere between 5:30 and 6:00pm. The time will be in the Dailies every day.

My experience on NCL is that you will have no problem getting a table by yourself. But sharing is a different issue. I've seen several anecdotal reports about it happening on NCL ships, but my experience would be that this is very much up to the individual initiative of the hostess in question (or the solo host, if there is one on your ship) to arrange. In other words, it doesn't appear to be a function of company-wide "policy" or anything that you can count on. Naturally, YMMV. ;-)

My preference is to dine alone, and therefore NCL has always "worked" for me. :-)

I have sailed as a solo two times on the Gem and maybe just two times I had to sit by myself for dinner. When you enter the dinning room tell the host you would like to share a table. It also helps to attend the solo/single get together to meet other solo's.

As for breakfast I always sat a shared table in the MDR.

I have done the Gem a few times, most recently last February. Like on all NCL ships, there is a solo gathering about 5:00 p.m daily. This is noted in the Freestyle Daily paper. There is an NCL Solo Host who coordinates the group. Anytime between 5:30 and 7:00, the Solo Host will escort the group to dinner. As the days progress on the cruise, there will be splinter groups (4 to 6 people per table) that will dine in different restaurants.

I went on a Christmas cruise on the NCL Epic, several times when I went to the restaurant I would be asked if I would mind sharing because they had a solo person who didn't want to eat alone. I had some good conversations with people that way.
