Smoking Policy changed in docs already

Recommended Posts

Interesting...when I printed my cruise docs for a Nov 2013 cruise today, I read this:

(the bold emphasis is mine)

Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom and any

stateroom balcony. This applies to all stateroom categories

onboard. If a guest is in violation of this stateroom policy, a

cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass®

account and may be subject to further action pursuant to

the ‘Consequences Section’ of the Guest Conduct Policy.

Cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco must be properly

disposed of and never thrown overboard. Cigar and pipe

tobacco is limited to designated outdoor areas and Cigar

Bars**. You must be at least 18 years of age to purchase,

possess or use tobacco onboard.

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are only permitted

within the designated smoking areas.

Royal Caribbean International kindly asks all guests to

please observe the smoking policy. These requests are

made to provide a comfortable cruise for everyone. Guest

may also inquire at Guest Services for the location of the

designated smoking areas onboard.

*Mariner of the Seas and Voyager of the Seas offer one

indoor smoking venue. Onboard Mariner of the Seas guest

can smoke at the Connoisseur Club located on Deck 5.

Onboard Voyager of the Seas guest can smoke at The

Vault, nightclub, located on Deck 3.

**Cigar Bars on Royal Caribbean International are called

the Connoisseur Club and are featured on the Freedom

Class and Voyager Class ships.

I don't usually participate in "smoking threads", and am not trying to stir up a hornets nest, but it's interesting they've made the change in the docs despite the policy being effective Jan 2014 based on the other communications from the company. I don't think it will affect too many people very much, since most people don't read their cruise docs anyway;)

It's been that for a few weeks my Majesty of the Seas 9/23 docs had the new wording.

(again bolded date is my emphasis)

Smoking Policy

For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, our ships

are designated as non-smoking, however, we recognize

that some of our guests smoke. Therefore, to provide an

onboard environment that also satisfies smokers, we have

designated certain public and private areas of the ship as

“smoking areas”. This policy includes smoking-like products

such as electronic cigarettes.

Smoking in public areas is only permitted in designated

smoking sections which vary by ship. Generally, smoking

is permitted outdoors on only one side of the ship; and

smoking is permitted on all private ocean front balconies.

To assist in locating areas where smoking is permitted, you

will find visible signage posted within all smoking areas

and ashtrays that are provided for your use. The location

of all smoking venues can also be found in the daily Cruise

Compass; or you may contact Guest Services once onboard.

For your safety, smoking is not permitted inside any

stateroom. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue,

food outlet, theater, hallway or corridor. A $250 cleaning

fee will be applied to the SeaPass account if smoking has

occured inside staterooms. Royal Caribbean International

kindly asks all guests to please observe the non-smoking

areas and to refrain from smoking pipes or cigars in any

of the public areas. These requests are made to provide a

comfortable shipboard environment for everyone. Guests

who violate this smoking policy may be subject to further

action pursuant to the ‘Consequences Section’ of this Guest

Conduct Policy.

Pipe and cigar smoking is only permitted within the Cigar

lounge. (If no Cigar lounge exists on a particular ship, there

will be a designated area for pipe and cigar smoking).

A guest must be at least 18 years of age to purchase,

possess or use tobacco products onboard. Cigarettes,

cigars and pipe tobacco must always be properly disposed

of and never thrown overboard.

Effective January 1, 2014

For the comfort and enjoyment of our guests, our ships are

designated as non-smoking; however, we recognize that

some of our guests do smoke. Therefore, to provide an

onboard environment that also satisfies smokers, we have

designated certain areas of the ship as smoking areas.

Cigarette, cigar, e-cigarette and pipe smoking is permitted

in designated outdoor areas of the starboard side of

all ships. To assist in locating areas where smoking is

permitted, guests will find visible signage posted within

all smoking areas and ashtrays that are provided for use.

Outdoor areas near restricted areas, food venues, and kids

play areas and pools will not allow smoking.

Casino Royale allows smoking and has a designated area for

non-smoking guests. There will be visible signage indicating

the non-smoking area in the casino. There are select cruises

departing from China that will not have a non-smoking area

in the casino.

Onboard all interior public spaces are smoke free*. Smoking

is not permitted in any dining venue, theater, bar, lounge,

hallway, elevator, and jogging track.

So maybe they are including both policies in one cruise document?? Confusing and repetitive! Not sure why the 1/2014 effective policy would apply to this 11/2013 cruise.

Did you happen to look at the RCI original memo site to see if any changes were made there?

Just curious---easier to post here than look up myself:D

Thank You

Sea Ya

No I haven't heard they are moving the date up; and we would have heard here first!;) I think they are just posting both policies in the cruise docs

Maybe one person is doing a string of cruises. I just got off the Majesty and one D+ person was going to be on the ship for 14 weeks to become Pinnacle.

Yes, I guess if you had. B2B then or would fall under both policies! That's a long time on a cruise ship! But it may be not much more than a 3 month rental in Florida and food for the same period of time!:D there are worse ways to spend a retirement I suppose!;)

Yes.

Gregg

I figured it wouldn't be popular to change the policy before those very party hearty holiday cruises. Lots of drinking, smoking gambling and general merry making during that time period!:D. So after the debauchery when everyone is ready to make their NY's resolutions the policy will change;)

  • 3 weeks later...

Just had one of my clients call RCI about the smoking policy and was told that smoking was allowed on all "private ocean-front balconies" for her May 2014 trip....had to burst her bubble on that one. Obviously the word has not made it down to everyone.

The lack of consistent message and lack of training is so unfortunate. Your client should be glad to have you - a knowledgable TA because I'm sure there will be lots of contradictory info out there over the next few months- even coming from the same source!

and I have to say, they were very strick on smoking, and that included the casino!! This is the wording in the Compass.....

Currently all Australian states and territories have banned smoking in closed public places. In compliance with Australian regulations, and for the comfort and enjoymentof our guest, the Radience of the Seas has beendesignated a non-smoking ship indoors. However, as we recognize that some of our guest smoke, we have designated smoking areas on the starboard side of the open air decks such as deck 5, deck 11 (midship seating area), Skybar Deck 12 and Deck 13 (outside the Starquest).

Please observe the non-smoking areas and refrain from smoking pipes or cigars in any of the public areas. A violation of this policy will result in a $250.00 fee on board.

Now I understand I was on this cruise and I was going to Austraila. When I did see one women smoking in the casino, they took NO time to tell her she could not. Once I did get to AUS, I am so glad I don't smoke.....$25.99 a pack there!! Just doesn't seem to stop them, seems like more smokers than what I would have thought. It was so nice not to smell all the time

The cruise docs for my November 2013 cruise states the smoking policy correctly. I can't copy and paste it here but it states that smoking is permitted on all ocean facing balconies.

And my cruise docs for November 2013 have both - the current policy is listed and it also states the policy for sailings after January 1, 2014.

Such inconsistency.
