World Cruise

We are considering a World Cruise. Yikes!!! Just saying those words is daunting.

We cruised on the Grand and Royal class ships but never on a small ship like the Pacific Princess. We do love sea days and our longest cruise was 28 days to the South Pacific which we loved. We are considering the 2020 WC; my question is should we book the PP for a test run (hate the expense of this option) to see if she suits us or should we throw caution to the wind and book it.

I would book a two week cruise on her first. Maybe even a TA. She can be bumpy when crossing the seas, and some people can't take it. Also, a two week cruise would give you the chance to see if you like the small ship. We do - 8 cruises on small ships, and two more planned. But some people don't. A two week cruise would give you a "taste" of her. I'd also look for one with several sea days in a row, if possible, because a World Cruise will have many of those stretches as you cross the oceans.

We did exactly what you are thinking about -- because we had done a world (on the Dawn Princess) and wanted to see how the small ship was. We did a 4 day, which was enough for us -- we decided that there were just not enough public spaces that we would want for that long a cruise.

We were looking at a 32 night cruise on Princess, never having cruised the line before. Yes, we booked a last minute, relatively cheap 7 night cruise on the same ship in order to check out both the ship and the cruise line before committing to a long cruise.

I would do a test run if you can. It’s a long commitment. We were considering Oceania WC and did several Caribbean cruises with them to see if the line was a good fit for us. As it turned out, we felt it wasn’t for that long a journey. We did the WC 94 days in 2015 on the pacific princess... booked 2018 WC, and had to cancel one month b4 do to husbands health issue. We are booked on the 111 day WC . I had so many what “ifs”, and it turned out to be extraordinary in every way for us.

I would book a "test" cruise to see if you like the ship. I went on a 12 day cruise on the then called Tahitian Princess in 2006. I believe it was a sister ship to the Pacific Princess. Everyone told me I would love the ship. I didn't. There were not enough dining options, activities and uncrowded spaces for my tastes. After 12 days I was grateful to get off the ship. A world cruise is both an investment of time and money. It is better to spend a little $ (if you are able) on a "test" cruise to insure that you have a good world cruise.

I'm gonna be the voice of dissent here. If you are as close to pulling the trigger on the World Cruise as you appear to be, why give yourself an "out"? I would book it now and not look back. A World Cruise is an event in and among itself, and being in a slightly different venue than you are used to adds to the intrigue. Whether 600 or 3600 fellow passengers the Princess touches will be there; the smaller ship will be no worse than a possible mild distraction--and only if you let it.

So step away from the computer and call your TA.

We have done a w/c and loved it enough that we have another booked. That amount of time is fine for some people and way too much for others.

Comparing the ships you have been on to the Pacific - less dinning option and less entertainment options are 2 major things which may or may not mean anything to you.

The voyage has well over 50% sea days so you have to love them. The menu repeats just like it would have on your 28 day voyage. The productions shows will repeat each segment.

I would suggest going through the roll calls for the last few to get learn more and do search for w/c reviews. You can even learn from reviews of w/c on other lines.

You may also look for some sales closer to some itineraries. This could help you experience the ship at a cheaper cost - we were on her for 14 days over last Christmas/New Years and following the Caribbean storms last year there were great sales for that sailing.

If you would like to do a world cruise - I would suggest P&O Arcadia. The ship is built for rough seas and P&O have some great speakers that come on to give lectures. Because they specialise is longer cruises, they have huge amounts of entertainers that fly in every week or so so that the shows are always fresh. The only downside is they go from Southampton to Southampton. We are doing a longish cruise on her next year - taking in the segment from Sydney to Singapore via Japan, Hong Kong and Vietnam. mummsie

We took a 14 day cruise on the previous iteration of the Royal Princess (sister ship to the Pacific Princess) and had a similar reaction. I think I would go stir crazy on a world cruise on that size ship. We have done a 31 day cruise on the Crown and a 25 day cruise on the current Royal Princess that were great but Princess doesn't use those size ships on a WC itinerary - and understandably so since filling them would be a challenge and getting into some of the ports that can make a WC so special might also be impossible. Now if the Coral Princess would sail the WC we would be seriously tempted!

Those are things to consider if deciding to take a world cruise or not. These would be true even if the world cruise was on Princess' largest ship. Just like the piano bar's pianist will have a limited play list, small or large ship.

On a world cruise, although the production shows will be the same on each segment, there will be different guest entertainers.

I would love to do a wc for our 50th in four years but not sure if my dh would go nuts. We have done many 4 week cruises and 5 weeks has been the longest. He had no problem with 8 sea days in a row. None of our friends are interested in going. Do most people go by themselves or with friends? And what happens if you do not gt along with your tablemates? We have been doing anytime dining since it started. Before that we really had no issues with any of the people.

I need to start ďoing some research.

We are on the Dec transatlantic for, pretty much, that reason. In addition, we started off by booking an interior cabin to test whether we could sail an interior for any length of time. We gave up on that with the first balcony upgrade offer. [emoji4] We will, also, have the opportunity to talk to the many, repeat PP cruisers who can give us more insight on an extended cruise on such a small ship. Our desire is to sail a future WC as well.

And what happens if you do not gt along with your tablemates?

A request to the maître d' will take care of the problem.

We had an obnoxious drunk at our table on a previous Princess cruise. After the second meal we had enough.

Not only did we request a different table, we changed dining rooms.

We had wonderful table-mates at our new location and related to them what had occurred in our previous table.

One of the couples encountered the drunk at a bar and described to us how she vomited on another passenger and was removed by security and they had to close the bar for clean up.

In my survey to Princess I requested this passenger be banned from future bookings on Princess.

It is my favorite ship and I love sea days but there are two problems for me: it goes around the world but skips many places I want to go and goes to many I have been to too many times & 2) I am not sure such a small ship wouldn’t be boring after 111 days. I too suggest you give it a try for a few weeks. Personally I solved my problem by going around the world - the parts I wanted to in one year in 3 different long segments on 3 different Princess ships. Mike
