Flavia

Recommended Posts

Like alot of you i took my first cruise on the Flavia, i was around 10 or 11 at the time it was November of 73 or 74...not sure of the year. Bad weather on the first day out still remember the sea sickness bags taped to the brass railings that ran down the halls. Have been on many cruises since and have never seen that. Still a great memory of my parents and glad they introduced me to cruiseing.:)

My first cruise was to the Bahamas with my fiance' on the Flavia in 1979. The room was very small, friends told us there was a hole in the shower between the state rooms (Yikes, there was!!!) Yes, I remember the Italian crew liked to flirt. I have fond memories of the band, we bought a cassette but it was stolen when someone broke into our van a few years later:(

How cool is this?!?!? I was just googling the Flavia and here you are! :)

The Flavia was my first cruise in May 1977. Our "senior" cruise.

It was GREAT fun, what I remember of it. :D

I do remember the flirty italian crew and the pool that had underwater windows to a bar below?!? Anybody remember that?

I just booked my 15th cruise for December. Soooooo ready.

This is amazing.

My first cruise was on the Flavia, as was the second.

My parents, quite out of character, took us on these 2 Bahamas cruises, both sometime in the mid--late '70's.

But we were under the band, and that went wellllllllllll into the late night. Learned then and there ALWAYS to check what was on the deck above and below our selected cabin!

The second time, we had 3 cabins, all off a little side alcove, with 2 porthole cabins and one inside.

That ship had neat little side-alcove hallways, so one could create a sort of "suite" of cabins, undisturbed by others in the main hallway.

Everything was magical, except that one of the children got *very* seasick the second time. It wasn't pretty, and "it wasn't pretty... all over the ship", alas.

She was absolutely miserable. That was the end of cruising for quite a while.

My second main memory was the delight of having as many entrees and desserts as I wanted. (I was rail-thin then, and would give just about anything for that again, even though I was teased mercilessly for being so skinny.)

However, my primary memory was of the CLARITY of the water in Nassau. We could see all the way down, to the ground surface far below the water surface. I had never realized that seawater wasn't *always* dark and murky.

So the FIRST thing we did was to get on a glass-bottom boat, to get to Paradise Island to spend the day at a beautiful warm beach :-)

We were all from different parts of the northern USA, and it was winter.

Now we are starting some serious and, hopefully, frequent retirement travel, and will be heading to Hawaii first, with Alaska not far behind.

Then we'll figure out "where next".

Even though it was a very short trip, I never forgot the convenience of "having the hotel follow you around at night"!

And that convenience was appreciated even more during longer cruises with more destinations, of course.

I was hooked immediately.

Flavia was my first cruise in March of 1980. I was a young 21 year old house wife curising with my husband and his family. It was one of the most magical times of my life. We left out of Miami to Nassau and Freeport. I loved the straw market. Oh those red and white striped outfits on the waiters. The only thing I hated was the shower curtain stuck to me ever time I took a shower and one night the water sloshed out of you toilet because of rough seas.

Flavia!!!! I will never forget you.:)

To Skymaster-Ken,

Trevor is recalling his time on the Flavia. He and his then wife sailed on her around 1974, he thinks. It was the time when you could get a cruise at the very last minute and get on the ship before it sailed to visit people. Their cabin was very small with bunk beds and a little bathroom. It was like a large walk-in closet.

He remembers that at the dances people were going around to the different couples like it was a dance contest. People were actually invited to the Captain's table!

It must have been a good time as he always has remembers it when we speak of cruising with others.

Regards to the lovely Mrs. I hope we can attend one of the Central Florida gatherings again at some point.

I have been enjoying all the comments about this ship. It's given me a better idea of what the ship was like and rekindled some memories for Trevor. It's too bad it met such a bad end. Thank you, Everybody!

I sailed on the Flavia for my senior class trip in 1974. Round trip ticket to Miami from Nashville and the 5 day cruise to the Bahamas was $274.00. What memories.....the food was awesome, the staff friendly and our room for 3 was tiny. LOL. My second cruise will be this September to Alaska. I am excited to be cruising once again.

saw the Flavia only one time. Nov 1981 in the harbour of Tangier, Morocco.

Was on a cruise with "Maxim Gorkij" - watching through the restaurantwindows during lunchtime - a yellow funnel swings in the harbour.....

it was the lovely "Flavia" enroute on a transatlantic from Florida to Italy for drydocking.

Sometimes she was also scheduled in the 70ths for official line voyaging Italy - Buenos Ayres, Argentina (from Buenos Ayres she cruised back to Florida) and Mediterranean Cruises from Venice (Summer 1978) - in this time the "Leonardo Da Vinci" from Italian Cruises International managed by Linea C, did overtake her Bahama service.

There was a joke about the "Leonardo Da Vinci":

"Leonardo Da Vinci" need more fuel lying still in the harbour - as "Flavia" running at full speed!

Costa Flavia was my first cruise, I was 15 and went with my Grandmother and friends. Had a blast. The most memorable thing for me was our head waiter. His name was Frank and he would meet us at the dining room door and he would put his arm out to escort me to our table. He called me Susie Baby, and it was awesome to hear in that Italian accent. I was determined to grow up and find Frank, lol. I think he was my first real crush.

In those days a uniform got you on board a cruise ship pretty easily and a group of us enjoyed the evening in the ship's lounges

Costa sold FLAVIA to Hong Kong shipping magnate C.Y. Tung in 1982. Tung renamed her FLAVIAN and planned on using her for cruises from Hong Kong, however she was laid-up at Hong Kong. She was sold to another owner in 1986 and renamed LAVIAN but remained laid-up. In 1989 she caught fire and sank in Hong Kong harbor, and was subsequently scrapped.

No, that was "Lavia" then Lavian. Flavia I have seen in port being refurbished.  cannot remember which port. Maybe everglades. rode her in 71 out of Miami.  I saw the FLAVIA twice while dining , seeing her out the window. 2016
