Main Dining Room new cruiser questions

I'm a first time cruiser with a couple of questions that I'm sure have been answered before so I apologize for the redundancy. Also, these aren't really important just more of being curious. We have 6pm assigned dining in the main dining room. When do we find out what table we've been assigned to? Do I go ask the maitre d when we get on board what our table number is? Then, when it's time for dinner, do we just walk in and go to our table or do we have to wait to be seated like at a land restaurant? I realize there'll probably be a line so we can't just walk right in, but I think you understand what I'm asking. Thanks for the info.

Do I go ask the maitre d when we get on board what our table number is? Only if you want to check out your table and make changes.

Then, when it's time for dinner, do we just walk in and go to our table or do we have to wait to be seated like at a land restaurant? If you know where your table is located, yes. They seem to like to greet you on the first night to make sure you get to the right table.

Have a great time!

You will find out what table you are assigned to when you receive your Sail & Sign card. Your dining room and table number are on this card. When you arrive at the dining room at your FIRST dinner, you will be escorted to your table. After that, you just go to your table on your own. Have a great time!

You will find out your table the first night when you show up promptly at 6pm for dinner. Or, if you are really curious, you can go to the MDR on embarkation day, try to find a staff member, and they will show you what table you have been assigned to.

The MDR is like a relatively "nice" restaurant. You will need to check in with hostess when you get there, and they will escort you to your table.

The table number will be printed on your key catd when you get it.

That's right! Hopefully you will have tablemates....it makes dinner so much more fun! Your dinner will likely change to 5:45pm....most of the time, Main seating is earlier than 6...but no worries...it takes a bit to order, get drinks, etc...

If you want a drink with dinner (cocktail, not water)....stop at a bar BEFORE dinner and pick up your drink of choice....it can take quite a while to get that 1st drink nowadays. Better to have one with you, and order another when you're seated.

Talking about which dining room and table, double check your S&S card. One time we were assigned to the "middle" dining room, while our cabin was totally aft. We went to the assigned dining room and had it changed to the aft restaurant. Another time they had my DW and myself assigned to different tables on different levels! Once again we had that corrected immediately..

So, be sure to check that dining assignment on your S&S card! ;)

Also double check if you're superstitious! We got this table on our 2015 Victory cruise and my wife broke her arm on that cruise.

I would have played 6 at roulette the whole week :D

Please speak for yourself. My wife and I would much rather dine by ourselves.

Make sure you show up to the dining room in comfy shorts, tshirt and a baseball hat.

I hear that everyone loves it when somebody dines in casual attire while on vacation.

To the OP who is a new cruiser, this was said tongue in cheek. The rules state that those things are not allowed in the MDR, yet some people still wear them and it offends some cruisers.

We always just wander into the MDR as soon as we board and look for our table. There is usually someone in there that will help you find it. That way on the first night, we just walk right to our table or booth and get out of the way of the people still looking for theirs.

Hope you have a great cruise and don't be surprised if you're hooked on cruising.

Some prefer tablemates, others not. One of the first things we do after getting our table number is to check it out ahead of time, and if it is not to our liking (for example, we have a table for two and prefer to dine with others this cruise, or vice versa), talk to the Maitre d. They will do all they can to move you, usually by the first night.

Good suggestion about the drinks, Alternately, if you have purchased a bottle or brought on wine or soda, just bring your drink or glass of wine or soda with you to the MDR.

Not everyone is antisocial. It must be difficult cooped up on a ship with 3000 other people!

I would not call preferring to enjoy a meal with your spouse without the awkwardness of forced interaction with strangers antisocial. Me and my wife prefer to not to be seated with strangers, and we are not antisocial. We just like to choose when we have social interaction and meals are not that time for us. Nothing wrong if you enjoy making new friends over dinner, and nothing wrong with those of us who don't.

There's nothing wrong with that, but isn't that kind of the textbook definition of antisocial?

The textbook definition would be defining the archaic psychology term. The secondary lay definition as you are using it is also incorrect because the fact that the person is with his or her spouse would indicate the opposite of being "antisocial" since another person is there.

has nothing at all to do with being social-- I know honey and I work different schedules at home

and see each other passing. So I use vacation to connect for the whole entire vacation.

I am with you. My wife and I only see each other on the weekends so we'd prefer to be alone to catch up.

Welcome and I agree, you will be hooked on cruising. One of the first things that amazed new cruisers is to find that your dining room staff will know your names, dining preferences, drink preferences and a little about where you are from and what you do in a relatively short time. They are fantastic in this way and many cruises later, still amazes me. There are many other parts of cruising that will blow you away but this is one.
