Self walking tour of Victoria, British Columbia

Recommended Posts

We are going to be in Victoria, BC In August. We are going to be there in port for only 5 hours late in the day. Would like to do a self guided tour of the city. Where do we dock and how far are we from the city, Would this be possible?

you dock at ogden point. its a 20-30 minute walk to town. its an easy walk but mostly residential so not much to see.

i'd probably take the shuttle or taxi to the inner harbour. spend time walking the waterfront, listening to the buskers, seeing the legistlature, the provincial museum, the fairmont empress hotel... its all in the same area. spaghetti factory for dinner or walk up government street (the touristy street--must stop at roger's chocolates!) to murchies tea room, the irish times or bard and banker to eat (pricier but often live music). go through bastion square to wharf street and walk along the water back to the inner harbour area.

We took a cab to Chinatown ($12 CDN plus tip), had dinner at Wah Lei Yuan and checked Fan Tan Alley and then walked back to the waterfront, stopping by The Empress as well as a few other places along the way

We walked through residential streets and past a park with a craft fair going on to get to downtown. After we explored the harbor area and walked through the international district, we walked back along the water to get to the port, so we actually just did a BIG loop. Being in town only 5 hours, if you are walkers, you might want to downtown and if time runs short take a cab back. There were multiple pedicabs at the port looking for hire - I think it was around $10 but we had all day so we just walked.

In Google Maps if you search for "ogden point to inner harbour" that will give you the route.

Please walk, as others have said James Bay is predominantly residential. Still very pleasant.

Fishermans Warf is not a bad place to spend a bit of time. The inner harbor is lined with interesting things to look at as well as government street.

A good percentage of the downtown core is made up of older building with independent shops on ground level and increasing tech companies on the upper levers. That helps provide a bit of balance to the business community.
