Random questions about the Carnival Magic

Recommended Posts

Now that I'm down to 35 days before my cruise (OH MY GOD) and have looked up just about everything you could possibly research about cruising I have a few really random and odd questions about my ship!

  • Does the arcade (Or casino) have quarter pushing machines? The SO is a savant when it comes to these and I'm both worried and delighted for her to have one she can use her sail and sign card for.
  • How often do people come around and offer you stuff on the ship? I plan on getting through a couple of my books and, while it's not that big a hassle, if I can find a place that's away from the hawking I'll snag it so as not to cause an unnecessary stop for the shot girl / guy.
  • I've found some people that said cabins were warm. Some people that said cabins were cool. I've bought a fan but what is the ambient temperature normally like? That being said, what's it normally like in the common areas? I usually keep the house at 74.
  • Are the beds on the firm side or the soft side? I took a road trip last week and finally slept on a couple of soft mattresses for the first time in years and couldn't sleep more than 90 minutes at a time due to it. I hate being big and tall.
  • Oh, and speaking of ambient temperatures, any issues with sailing in October? I'm planning on bringing a light jacket but I don't think I'll need much more than that, right?

Sorry for the big list of questions. I have a day off and I'm overly excited and watching the same two dozen YouTube videos of my ship and ports I've been watching for a couple of months! This will be my SOs first vacation in a couple of years and my first since I started working almost 15 years ago.

  • My son advises that the arcade uses the card and DH says the casino does too - but winnings don't go onto the card.
  • How often do people come around and offer you stuff on the ship? I plan on getting through a couple of my books and, while it's not that big a hassle, if I can find a place that's away from the hawking I'll snag it so as not to cause an unnecessary stop for the shot girl / guy.
  • We have never been disturbed when reading or chatting. If you are in a bar or the pool deck they will approach about drinks. If you are walking on the promenade they may try early on to talk about steakhouse, wine package etc.
  • I've found some people that said cabins were warm. Some people that said cabins were cool. I've bought a fan but what is the ambient temperature normally like? That being said, what's it normally like in the common areas? I usually keep the house at 74.
  • I would guess MDR is 72-74. You can cool or warm your cabin as needed by controling the vent.
  • Are the beds on the firm side or the soft side? I took a road trip last week and finally slept on a couple of soft mattresses for the first time in years and couldn't sleep more than 90 minutes at a time due to it. I hate being big and tall.
  • I would say beds are medium. We have a foam matteress and they are firmer than that
  • Oh, and speaking of ambient temperatures, any issues with sailing in October? I'm planning on bringing a light jacket but I don't think I'll need much more than that, right?
  • that should be fine

Hope that helps

We sailed the Magic in April, here you go:

  • Yes. The casino, near the cashier window as I recall.
  • Plenty of inside, such as library. Or, outside, such as sides of deck 5 or Lido that bar staff dont roam.
  • I tend to always be cold, my SO likes it cold. Our cabins have always been chilly enough that I use a blanket. Even this year on deck 11 w/ balcony.
  • I dont have sleeping problems, here is my advice that helps me sleep: If I dont sleep well one night, I make sure to do more stuff and/or have 1 more drink than the day before until I find a balance.
  • Have never cruised in October, but I take a hoodie and pants in April. Nights at sea tend to be cool most times of the year.

As always, YMMV. Have fun, have a drink, go down the slides. Stay up late and eat pizza and cookies. Do everything, never go home and say I wish I would've done blah blah blah....;p

  • Does the arcade (Or casino) have quarter pushing machines? The SO is a savant when it comes to these and I'm both worried and delighted for her to have one she can use her sail and sign card for. If you are referring to quarter push game machine in the casino then the answer is yes, they have a few...
  • How often do people come around and offer you stuff on the ship? I plan on getting through a couple of my books and, while it's not that big a hassle, if I can find a place that's away from the hawking I'll snag it so as not to cause an unnecessary stop for the shot girl / guy. I have been on Magic twice and dont remember anyone hawking on the ship (photo people wanting to take your pix through the photo hall maybe), you can find many spots to hide out an read with no problem, one reason we book a balcony is the nice quiet times and a good book...
  • I've found some people that said cabins were warm. Some people that said cabins were cool. I've bought a fan but what is the ambient temperature normally like? That being said, what's it normally like in the common areas? I usually keep the house at 74. For me the restaurant areas are always cold, the public areas didnt seem especially cold but were comfortable and our cabin is usually on cool side at night, you can always bring a fan if you need more air....
  • Are the beds on the firm side or the soft side? I took a road trip last week and finally slept on a couple of soft mattresses for the first time in years and couldn't sleep more than 90 minutes at a time due to it. I hate being big and tall. We are always very comfortable but not sure if mattress is firm or not, do not recall noticing....
  • Oh, and speaking of ambient temperatures, any issues with sailing in October? I'm planning on bringing a light jacket but I don't think I'll need much more than that, right? light jacket or long sleeve shirt for night/evening should be good unless you are sailing from a more northern port (ie: Baltimore) then you might need a medium jacket for on way back....

We sailed the Magic in April, here you go:

  • Yes. The casino, near the cashier window as I recall

You don't know what you've done.

We've spent the last five hours chasing each other around the apartment and pool yelling "quarter machines!" at eachother.

God save those on our ship. And thank you!

My thoughts, which may be the same as the others:

Does the arcade (Or casino) have quarter pushing machines? The SO is a savant when it comes to these and I'm both worried and delighted for her to have one she can use her sail and sign card for. Yes, I've seen this in the casino.

How often do people come around and offer you stuff on the ship? I plan on getting through a couple of my books and, while it's not that big a hassle, if I can find a place that's away from the hawking I'll snag it so as not to cause an unnecessary stop for the shot girl / guy. In all my cruises, I've never seen anyone on the ship go around "hawking" anything. Of course, there has been the occasional bar server asking if I needed anything.

I've found some people that said cabins were warm. Some people that said cabins were cool. I've bought a fan but what is the ambient temperature normally like? That being said, what's it normally like in the common areas? I usually keep the house at 74. This is subjective. I've found the cabins comfortable. YMMV.

Are the beds on the firm side or the soft side? I took a road trip last week and finally slept on a couple of soft mattresses for the first time in years and couldn't sleep more than 90 minutes at a time due to it. I hate being big and tall. Again, subjective...what is firm for one is not for another...to me they're comfy.

Oh, and speaking of ambient temperatures, any issues with sailing in October? I'm planning on bringing a light jacket but I don't think I'll need much more than that, right? I've found the main showroom a bit cool at times.

From what I've read, this seems to be the direction that Royal Caribbean is going. While I've not heard anything about roving hawkers, I recall reading about how they've set up tables in the atrium hawking things.

I just got off of the Magic on Saturday. I probably was asked once daily by a roving server if I wanted a drink. 98% of the time I dragged my Cheers having self to the bar. There were little "kiosks" set up on the Lido deck inside before you hit the pool area that the spa would stand to answer questions or you could sign up for Cat in The Hat breakfast. The spa ladies never said anything but a smile, no actual hawking.

If you do feel your room may be too warm, contact guest services. Our last few cruises our room has seemed warn to us. This past year on the Magic our room felt warmer than normal, after two days we contacted guest services. They sent someone up to check and sure enough it WAS incredibly warm - nearly a sauna in the bathroom. They got it fixed immediately and even gave us some OBC for the inconvenience. Certainly wasn't expecting that, but it was nice of them. I don't recall what the temp is supposed to be, but if you like 74 then you should be good to go.

Royal Caribbean is the WORST at this! They hawk you while your eating dinner - trying to sell you on another dining venue.
