I know this is not the question but consider using Uber.

It is charged to your credit card.

Prices are very competitive.

We just used Uber several times during our recent stay in Sydney and it was terrific.

We didn't use it nor a taxi. Hotel arranged the car.

That's it.

The range is based on whether there is an up charge.

We waited no more then 10 minutes for Uber.

Usually two to three minutes from our downtown Hotel near the Rocks.

Great drivers.

Very safe.

We are pretty much done taking Taxis unless that is the only choice.

Had it one time.

We know about it.

Overall we felt much better about the Taxis.

Also we found that we were taken directly to where we wanted to go and not for a "ride".

Even In Sydney some tourists can be taken by a ride as confirmed by several people who worked in our hotel who also recommended Uber.

I most prefer Uber these days or booking private vehicles in certain cases such as when we used it both ways between hotel and airport.

Daughter's in laws used public transportation which was another option.

Choice is good.

In terms of surge, you only need to be about 1.2x for Uberx to be the same cost as taxis, and that means all other options are more.

That Uber estimate is WAY out! I have done Rocks to Airport and reverse - and Rocks to Darling Harbour and reverse - several times over the past few months and it was never over $26. If its surging on any particular day I grab a taxi as its not that much different in price.
