Summer cruise of of Vancouver that doesn't go to Alaska Any ideas?

Recommended Posts

We are three families that want to take a summer cruise from Vancouver (preferably return so no air) and don't want to go to Alaska. Does anyone have any ideas? We have kids involved so need summer, spring break, or Christmas. Don't really want Christmas out of Vancouver, too darn cold even if there were any. Could leave from Seattle too if there are any. I can't seem to find anything.

Not many non-AK cruises from Vancouver except in the shoulder seasons, when ships are moving in and out. 'California Coastals' make up the majority of those repo cruises in case cruising one-way to or from e.g. LA, San Diego, San Francisco might be of interest. We've taken a 10day Cali Coast round trip from Vancouver - Princess do these at least a couple of times a year as they do seem popular.

Keith already mentioned the Hawaii loops - there are now several of these a year from Princess, in Spring/Fall, including dates that might overlap Spring Break (depends which school district, which year, and of course the dates would need to coincide perfectly to allow you the full 15 day duration!) If your budget is high, a river cruise along the Columbia could be feasible - getting everyone down to Other Vancouver isn't much more hassle than getting to Seattle (if you're driving it's just more gas, and if you take the train you can get off in Vancouver WA or Portland from the same morning train that hits Seattle first).

But realistically you have to face facts - what you want is simply not in much demand for mainstream cruise lines. Even if someone did decide to offer an RT Vancouver or Seattle to 'Somewhere Warm' in summer, that sailing would need to pack the ship full (like Alaskan cruises do) and also generate comparable or better income from sales of onboard booze & merch & ship tours. With 'civilized' ports the only really viable ones for an RT out of Vancouver, and generally very urban ones at that, it's way too tempting for even first-timers to just decide to walk around the cities, take a HOHO, or generally do things that don't make the cruise lines any money at all... and with prices for excursions as high as they are in AK, the lines make a very tidy profit reselling all of those tours!

We did a cruise many years ago on Cruise West (no longer in business) with an itinerary that explored Vancouver Island and Princess Louisa inlet. It was a great cruise out of Seattle. The only urban port was Victoria. We've also explored much of this area by private boat. Inlets and ports are not crowded with large cruise ships - a plus.

I'm posting a link for Uncruise - a small ship line that does similar Pacific Northwest itineraries.

You are going to have a hard time finding this on a mainstream cruise line. They are all doing runs up to Alaska during the summer. Some are round trip from Vancouver. In the early spring and fall they re-position the ships for the winter. The re-position cruises involves a one-way between California and Vancouver if the ship is based in the Caribbean or South America for the winter. The re-position cruises from Hawaii or Japan to Vancouver if the ship is based in Asia during the winter.

What you can find (and these can be quite expensive) are boutique cruise lines on small ships. Maple Leaf Adventures and Un-Cruise are example. Pearl Sea and Blout have been in the region before, but I don't think they current run anything in this area.

More of a ferry/road-trip. BC Ferries run a ship from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. That is a two day journey on a car ferry with state-rooms etc. It is not a cruise ship and is a very different experience. BC Ferries Vacations offers some nice package deals that bundle ferries and hotel at a discounted rate.

You can do a cruise to Hawaii or a Pacific Coastal. We booked Eclipse (B2B2B Sept/Oct 2019), 11 nights Vancouver to Hawaii, 10 nights Hawaii to Vancouver and 7 nights Vancouver to Los Angeles. A dream vacation 28 nights at Sea

Unfortunately we can't. I had stated we need summer as we have grand kids coming with us.

We have done a Hawaii cruise and loved it. And we have also done a cruise, LA to Vancouver.

It looks at the moment that it will be an Alaska cruise. We were trying to avoid the air fare and time change etc. I did look into doing Caribbean cruises as well and with the air and hotel needed pre trip it would cost about the same as the Alaska. Being summer probably August we don't want to be in the Hurricane season of the Caribbean so Alaska here we come.....
