robtbob Posted June 5, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2018 Say it isn't so. Just heard that big ships have just recently been banned from entering Milford Sound because of environmental concerns. Does any one know if this is true? I was looking forward to this in Feb 2019 on Ovation of the Seas.:loudcry:
Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted June 5, 2018 #2 Share Posted June 5, 2018 I can't see any mention of anything like that online, and I imagine it would have been all over the media downunder if it were so.
robtbob Posted June 5, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted June 5, 2018 A friend just came back and told me. Said it just happened. We'll wait and see.
GUT2407 Posted June 5, 2018 #4 Share Posted June 5, 2018 I wouldn’t be surprised if it did happen. Other places have done so. Maybe it will make the lines rethink mega ships.

Kiwi Kruzer Posted June 5, 2018 #7 Share Posted June 5, 2018 The only reference I have found is a ban on cruise ships going through the Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds. This channel is narrow and fast flowing and is only used by the Interisland ferries .Azamara Quest hit a rock when she went though a few years ago and that has led to the ban. Cruise ships will still sail the sound and use the main channel, a bit longer but more scenic. As for Milford Sound....that is in Fiordland National Park and all cruise ships need a permit to enter. robtbob Posted June 8, 2018 Author #8 Share Posted June 8, 2018 It was Milford Sound NZ. Someone just came back from there.
Globaliser Posted June 8, 2018 #9 Share Posted June 8, 2018 It was Milford Sound NZ. Someone just came back from there. If it really is about Milford Sound, it's very curious that there's apparently no news whatsoever about this to be found online. I would expect it to be a high-profile decision, if it was taken. In contrast, several of us have found the recent news about a much less interesting event concerning Marlborough Sounds. Desert Cruizers Posted June 17, 2018 #10 Share Posted June 17, 2018 During our cruise in 2014, we did all three sounds but we were on the Radiance of the Seas which handled the scenic cruise beautifully. In fact we actually moved right up to one of the Falls during our Melford cruise.
